Happiness > success
If it was lower stress or even a chance for me to get out of the office more....I'd be on it like white on rice. but it would mean me being more grounded here more so than now. I have a feeling though since I am here and it would be the easiest transition for my department and for everyone that works around me, that I might be asked to do so....BUT im sure there are others with more experience who might want a shot...and who am I to take something away from someone who actually WANTS the job in the end? That pretty much describes the job I'm in now. Its a really good job, it's just not a really good job for me. With that said, it was over a 10% raise (that's huge in a land of 2-3% raises), staying with the same company, nice office with a window (means a lot after being inside a building inside another building for 3 years), better work hours, much lower stress environment, and just a generally happier and more optimistic sector of the business. It's not a move I would have made 2 years ago, and 2 years from now it probably wouldn't be the right move, but the timing was right. I was approached by the hiring manager because of my experience, and I was interested because it give me a lot more flexibility and marketability inside and outside the company. While it's not the "perfect" job for me, its a good place to be, and the fact that the manager put faith in me and gave me a little push helps make it a better fit and inspires me a little more when the days get frustrating.
If it was lower stress
Not entirely. There are Jobs within my company that pay even more than I would be getting paid and have lower stress, no dealing with people directly, with your own office, working with a small group of people in a nice new building and I would qualify for them as well...just haven't had any openings.Who wouldn't want to take a job with lower stress and paying more?
Simple fact is, in most companies, moving up the ladder regardless of the job is going to bring more stress and more responsibility. It is something you have to cope with if you want to move up. There is a reason they pay you more!
Exactly. I had planned on asking for more. Just not sure how much more I should ask for without sounding greedy. If you are the first choice, then the negotiation just started.
Whatever they offer as far as a raise is just that, a first offer that they intentionally low balled expecting you to counter.
You have already expressed trepidation. The ball is now firmly in your court.
"I am excited for the opportunity but given the increased demands I think a new salay of X is more in line with the increased job demands."
If they wont move on money brgain for an extra week vacation. Get SOMETHING extra.
You can never overcome the raise you DONT get coming in the door. The only opportunity close is the one you are faced with presently. Maximize it.
Remember your new pay grade shouldnt be compared to your old one but to the old person in that position.

Two grand more a year will allow for all this??? Sorry to break it to but I just got back from a 14 day trip to Europe and by the time it was all said and done it cost about 12K.I feel like I haven't given a fair perception of the pros of the job...
While there aren't that many... It would be more money - I could buy a gas saving car instead of driving my jeep every day - I could pay off debt, I could buy more guns I could really save and plan a trip to Europe.
It would make me a more valuable asset to my company. I would basically be in charge of my department - would really beef up my resume - I could possibly change some things that I know other people want but have never had the guts to bring to anyones attention.
The old person is my current boss now.....but sadly, she is very private when it comes to stuff like that and probably wouldn't tell me what she made....Do you know the old person?
Would they tell you what they were making?

$2000 is about $150 more per month. That'll disappear in a heart beat. Unless you take that and put it in savings, no Europe trip for 6 years f. And that means no change in lifestyle with added stress. Two grand more a year will allow for all this??? Its $167, and factor out 30% for taxes, its $117/mo. AKA not that much.$2000 is about $150 more per month. That'll disappear in a heart beat. Unless you take that and put it in savings, no Europe trip for 6 years f. And that means no change in lifestyle with added stress.
point being, get all the raise you can!
:unamused:Its $167, and factor out 30% for taxes, its $117/mo. AKA not that much.
it will actually be 4k raise. So $234 a month based on that math plus the $250 I already save.
So $484 a month isn't too bad.
Forget about the current $250. This is about the new gain. $234/ month isn't a huge jump in income IMO.
To me the most important aspect is what you have kinds of glossed over - that the new job is locking you into a different line than your want to be long-term. That to me is a big red flag. You're not just adding stress & responsibility, you're sacrificing your whole goal of what you want to be doing. That IMO is priceless.
I'm out on vacation in Mackinac Island right now. This afternoon we met an artist who painted our pictures (cheesy yes but a good anniversary memoir).
In chatting the guy basically said he's making no living at all as an artist (his real full-time job the rest of the time is doing comic strip artwork). But you knwo what - the guy is *happy*. He lives on an island while there weather is great for 4 months a year drawing sketches of people who really don't care how they look, they just want to do something fun. He dosn't own a car or even know what the price of gas is or anything about politics. Stress-free life, pays like shit, but it works out for him. I'm happy for that guy b/c he's cool w/ his place in life.
... and I got a really cheesy pic that will make my wife smile when she sees it for the next 10 years...
Quoted for reference in 6 months...I'm gonna take the position. I have to try. If it becomes too much for me....I can back out and get my old job back and they will just post the job for someone else. I'm going to go in with the attitude that I'm gonna take charge and do it and do it well. I feel I've got too much pressure on me to not take the job and not even get it a shot....I think I need to get out of my comfort zone a bit. I'm stressed about it but I feel I gotta do it.
You might be right...but I gotta give it a shot. I can't continue to just sit where Im at now because it comfortable and Im used to it...then Ill never get anywhere.Quoted for reference in 6 months...
