Talk to me about electric razors

I've always wet shaved with a disposable style razor, usually a Gillette Mach3. Typically in the shower but sometimes just wet shaving at the sink with hot water. Never used shaving cream.

In light of recent events, I have to switch to an electric razor. My wife bought me a rotary head razor that seems to work ok, but doesn't seem to get as close as my normal shave. But I also haven't discovered the nuances of using it yet either (tips on that?)

Not sure how long I'll have to use an electric razor, so not looking to spend a ton of money, unless you can recommend a really good one that will make me switch permanently.

Nah, electric will never be as good. I find that Shick give me a better shave than Gillette. Haven’t tried any fancy brands (like Harry’s) yet. Use conditioner as a lube in lieu of shaving cream. Also good for umm.. assistance? For external assistance only. YMMV.

It'll never be as close...but what I do with electric razors is I have a Wahl beard trimmer, knock down the growth if its been a while. That always left a decent 5 oclock shadow...as I got more professional I needed something tighter. I noticed the neck trimmer that my barber used got pretty close to the skin, so I got the model number (Wahl also) and use that. I usually razor shave once every 6-8 weeks, beard trim Sunday mornings before church and if I have an important meeting I'll use the neck trimmer on my face.

Liberally apply cornstarch based baby powder before using the shaver.
I do this to help with razor burn .... even with an electric. :(

It also dries the skin and lets the whiskers stand up ..... get as close as a shaver can.
BTW .... according to the "experts" you need to use at least two weeks to determine how well it's going to work.

Switched from Gillette to harrys a couple months ago (had nothing to do with that stupid commercial), my only regret is not switching sooner. I keep a close shave, and harrys is way better than the Gillette, for less. They cut smoother with less pulling. Also, it leaves my face silky damn smooth, the wife loves that.

I have no input on an electric razor, never used one.

The closest shave I get is with my old Gillette safety razor but it also cuts me the worst when I fuck up. My second choice for closeness is my Harry's razor cause its a decent shave and a lot cheaper than what I used to spend on Gillette fusions and Mach 3 blades.

Now since you actually asked about an electric shaver, check out Ollie's Bargain Outlet. They have several of the major brands of electric razors dirt cheap and if this is only temporary, that is the route I would go.

I have a regular ol norelco razor I use a few times a week when I don't feel like going through the fuss of a regular wet razor. The key to getting it close is to work it against the grain. I have to work a little harder on my neck to get it close but it's very doable. It will give you razor burn doing that until your skin toughens up

I started shaving with an electric, because it's what my dad used. No idea what it was, one of those three bladed in a triangle pattern things. It seemed ok but I didnt know any better. I used some kind of pre shave lotion that supposedly raised the hairs and got a closer shave.

I got a free sample of a Gillette something, probably mach 3 and never looked back.
