Taurus Fan

Do you have a wiring diagram for this kind of setup? I bought a mark 8 fan on ebay and it should be here tomorrow. I would like the high speed to come on with the temp sending unit like the black magic fan already is wired on my jeep. The low speed setting would need to automatically shut off. I like the way you described the way your gonna wire it i just need some instructions to follow.

key on-speed 1
sending unit activated-spd. 1 off and spd. 2 on
water crossing switch and warning light when off

The diagram I'm using is similar to what you have in mine, except the low speed also runs off a thermo switch, but you could just bypass that...

Also, in mine, there is a switch that must be on for low speed. You'll really need that if you want to have it be able to shut off for water crossings.

The relay in the center is mandatory - it shuts off current to the low speed windings when the high speeds kicks in.

The fan swap sounds like it might be a worth while investment. What model Taurus or others are you finding these fans on? Might have to make a trip to the bone yard again this week...

3.8L one are the desired ones, with the 3 wires... Also Lincoln Mark VIII's..

contactors and switches.

You can order a contactor from Alied Electronics for $15, 12volt activated and will handle 200 amps. I use it to control the battery charge circuit for the slide-in. You can get a 30 amp switch at Pep Boys with a red LED light in the end of the handle for $6.75, It is bright and should last forever.( may have different colors) You will always know when the fan switch is on.

I lucked out and found some solenoids from my old Warmsey winch.. they outta work perfectly for the high speed... continuous duty. the rest will be regular Bosch 30 Amp "automotive" relays.

I bought one of these two speed Taurus fans a couple of years ago for another project, and it has been sitting on the shelf since. They are hard to find. Out of about 30-40 cars, I got the only one left. I am considering using it on my new truck. My only reservation is the electrical demand it will place on my system. Truck will have a winch, rock lights, regular lights, and then possibly this fan. What amp alternator are those who have this fan running? What would you consider to be a minimum amperage rating alternator to run this fan with the other equipment I mentioned without a problem?

Thanks,
Danny

I checked all of my stuff when I first installed it.
2 front rock lights
2 middle rock lights
2 front driving lights
Headlights
Heater fan on high
Rear back up lights
( all aux lights are 55 w )
CB radio
Everything but the winch running
draw was 86 amps
Have not checked since installing the Taurus fan

I run a 70 amp right now, do have a 160 amp that should be back soon. But so far no problems. But then again I have not been winching with everything on at once.

Why remove the mechanical fan, the electric will not move the same amount of air.

I have a single speed Taurus fan on my 1997 4Runner Limited with the 3.4L. I got a Haiden (sp?) Imperial fixed 180 thermostat. It comes on at 180 and goes off at 160. My truck was running in Tellico for 6 hours at very low or no speeds and the guage never got close to half. It runs cooler than before and makes a cool sound, not to mention no more smashed radiators cause I can cut it off at water crossings. I am on my 3rd radiator with 2 JB weld patches and running cool.

I used the relay and fuse that came in the kit BTW

I've got a Motorcraft 3G 130amp alternator to go on my EB. It should be enough to run my electronic ignition, factory lights, fan, and 9K winch. The 3G puts out 85amps at idle.
