Tellico Spring Fling

Getting irate over peoples comments will not help the situation.

you're right and I've given it some thought. I'll probably just work behind the scenes and keep spreading the word. If I'm really passionate about something, my emotions can definitely get the better of me.

Nick, I applaud your efforts in helping to organize this event. Big kudo's to Danny as well. The biggest complaint that I see is about the date. a lot of folks would like to go to both. Myself included. But as pointed out, The April fools run is an annual event, much like The Dixie Run. In this day and time people have to plan ahead for events like this so they mark it on their calender. A simple solution would be to delay Danny's event for a couple of weeks, or even a month.

OK, I just talked with the WP and we are in. I will spread the word on this end. Fact is, I miss Tellico. Last year was the first year since 1996 that I did not attend the Dixie Run. Tellico trails are near and dear to my heart. These trails are what has caused me to do most of the modifications I have done.
I will most likely come up Thursday night so I can set up and be ready to wheel Friday.
I no longer have my Jeep tagged and insured, so i will have to figure out how to get it to and from the trails.

OK, I just talked with the WP and we are in. I

we need to catch up while you're there. we were camped next to each other at the Dixie Run 2 years ago and never met.

Hey Guys, just wanted to put my 2 cents in the mix. I have found the best way to kill rumors and mis information is to put it out there right from the horses mouth. The Spring Fling was intiated on the opening weekend of Tellico OHV last year to signify the importance of it's reopening. The date is as important as the issue itself. The objective is to bring out awareness as well as much needed funds to fight the fight for all of us that enjoy motorized access to public lands.
I have read the comments that have been made and have to say some are exaggerated. SFWDA does need funds for a fact. I speak to membership almost weekly and know for a fact that they would not have asked BRC to send out a direct mailing to all members of BRC, UFWDA and SFWDA if the funds were not needed(not cheap). This battle will cost 100,000+ if it goes all the way to make the FS do what is right. I know that folks are frustrated and feel that SFWDA is just sitting on there butts and things just are not moving fast enough. They are committed to the fullest degree, without a Tellico there is no SFWDA. This is an all in situation. Here is an eye opener guys, nothing in the Government moves fast when it is against the grain of what they invision is the best course of action. SFWDA can not leak out information as to what they are doing to anyone not directly involved. The secret squirell attitude is all about the eliment of surprise and stategy. You don't show people your poker hand while playing to win either. Some mis information and and rumors are good to misdirect, however negative statements towards our fight only causes doubt amongst our own. Also any open forum not a safe place from folks looking for information to take back to the enemyTU and FS are lurking). One slip of the tongue could make all the difference in the world as to how things play out.
As far as Harlen is concerned, the PR reps out there push how the people just love you there. I can tell you if they had other industry there, they would want nothing to do with you at all. You wouln't be driving your less than street legal rigs on the public roads either. People would not put up with the noise and crowds. I know the overwhelming majority of you guys are great, however I also know that sometimes folks have a bad day and do things that are not socially acceptible, how long do you honestly think anyone would put up with that if they had a choice. You are the best and only thing going. Here is a little fact for you all, I had clubs tell me that they were contacted shortly after the closures started to happen at Tellico by folks pushing Harlen. They were told, "Hay you should move your event up here, Tellico is as much as dead and the people of Murphy hate you". This type of behavior burns me up...To me Harlen is not looking out for anyone but themselves. Even though this mentality makes me angry, I still don't wish what is happening at Tellico OHV on them. I think it is better to have both places to wheel.
The leadership of Murphy are a royal pain in the ass and most of them are ancient. They see Tellico as something that is in the County and not a City issue. They are unaware of how much money comes in that is generated by the park because they usually only recognize the "jeeps" coming in on trailers Friday night and don't see you leave on Sunday because they are in Church. They don't recognize most of you in town all cleaned up with the high dollar tow rigs because you look just like everyone else (Tourist) in town, so they assume you are visiting Murphy as a Tourist not a wheeler visiting Tellico. The other attitude you deal with is that these people have been here for generations. They have been walked on by Government and don't think they can fight the Man! So they take whatever happens and adapt.
I am getting off my soap box and leave everyone with this Jerry Springer final thought. I am sorry that this event conflicts with I don't know how many other plans and events out there. If you can make it, I look forward to seeing you folks and plan on having a great time. If you can't make it for whatever reason, stay positive and keep fighting to Rescue Tellico. If we lose this battle, your next favorite stomping ground may be the next on the hit list and all we have to blame is ourselves.

If I'm really passionate about something, my emotions can definitely get the better of me.

Me too :) Definately keep the passion coming! I'm with you there 100%! Like I said, just remember that you aren't the only one that LOVES Tellico and like you said, keep the negative comments to a minimum ;)

OK, I just talked with the WP and we are in.

WP? What's that? Dixie Run is always the first weekend in Oct, my wife's bday is Oct 3rd :( Spring Fling first weekend in April, my wedding anniversary is April 3rd :( We'll have to see what kinda mood she's in closer to Fling time :)

IMO this mentality is just wrong. It's the same rhetoric I hear from the SFWDA officers. With today's technology there MUST be some way for SFWDA to communicate safely and securely with it's membership about what is going on if SFWDA is going to continue to be agrowing and influential association. I feel like they want to play MY poker hand the way THEY want to. There is a duscussion going on right now on the SFWDA forum about the need for communication and the disenchantment of member clubs with SFWDA policy. If you cannot keep me "in the loop" as a long time supporter, both financially, as a member of SFWDA and as a trail volunteer at Tellico, then I will be thinking about offering my support somewhere else. That's just a fact. If my contributions are not worthy of associate club and membership oversight then something is wrong with SFDWDAs governing just like our federal government expecting taxpayers to foot a multi billion dollar bailout without any oversight or accountability.

I have read the comments that have been made and have to say some are exaggerated. SFWDA does need funds for a fact.

See upnover's comment above on this, it exactly what I was told face to face by SFWDA officers!

I was one of the ones who posted saying that the trails have been maintained to a point they took a lot of the fun out of it. That was second hand information, I have not seen it for myself. That information was told to me from several people that has been there recently(recent as in when I had posted the comment).

I have seen it for myself! Both Lower Schoolbus and the approach to Guardrail were "groomed" in late fall 2008. Several other sections have been "improved" also. I understand the need for this and is will not influence my riding at Tellico but it is a fact, as it is at all FS venues, they do annual trail "maintainence".

Is everyone that is posting on here from or living in the state of NC?
If you are living here then I think you should support whats at home before going to a run in another state. If you don't wanna help do anything for the state of North Carolina then just go to Kentucky4x4 forums and kiss their behinds. I for one am tired of hearing people whine about it. If you have no sense of pride for the state you live in and helping here first, then make up every excuse to go somewhere else and help them. Take your belongings with you and move there then. You people sound like our government trying to fix things everywhere else except at home. It doesn't matter if there's a 2% chance of helping that to me is better than nothing.

I appreciate the update, it's nice to get scouting reports on trails. Having said that, I've noticed that making the trails too easy has been par for the course at tellico for ages now. It seems like bad news at first but it doesn't take long at all for the trails to get rough again. Heck, for a few years it seemed like they filled in lower 2 with rocks every 6 months. The trails seem ruined but it gets hard again soon enough.

Not really an update, just what I saw in late October. And yeah, with the traffic and the weather the "grooming" doesn't last too long :)

They have worked on the trails and for the better. There has to be maintenance performed on trails. That's just life. It's either perform maintenance or lose them. I don't mind what they've done. I think it looks great. I wheeled all year at Tellico and it still has the challenges it's always had.

Hey Guys,
I'm sorry that there is frustration of not knowing what is going on. Honestly, there is nothing that can be said to the masses that wouldn't be stategy oriented. The main thing is that SFWDA is fighting and the FS is extremely concerned as to what direction we are coming from(ACTIVELY SEEKING). That is a great feeling for our side, this means that they have to consider every angle before that act. Would you rather be told exactly what is going on and the information slip out, because you told the juicy information to someone you trusted and then they told another person, so on and so on. Then after the chain of command is so far down the line it gets forgotten that it is supposed to be a secret in the first place. If SFWDA was your defense attorney, you wouldn't want them going around telling the prosecution the angle of defense so they can be prepared. If you can't believe SFWDA, then try to believe me. I have everything to loose if Tellico gets shut down, I can't move my campground to KY or anywhere else. I know what is going on with SFWDA and also know that they have spent a lot of money. The only reason they will not need anymore from the Rescue Tellico fund is when the FS opens the place back up to it's full glory. On a positive note, the fine Irishman O'Bama has placed over 150 million in his economic stimulis plan slated to go to the US Forest Service. Cross your fingers that some of that comes to Tellico OHV. If that is the case I like him better already!

Yeah, except for Lower School Bus, approach to GuardRail and Helicopter Pad, exit from Fain's Ford, bridge over Deep Water Crossing, Lower 6 turned into a gravel road, NO Lower 2, NO SlickRock, NO Peckerwood Ledge!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not continually trying to bash your posts but it obviously doesn't have the challenges it's always had :) I think one of your main objectives is to keep the enthusiasm for Tellico alive to aid the RT effort and to keep people interested in coming to Tellico, and that's a good thing! Keep it up, I'm all for it!

My retort....

Lower Schoolbus in November was damn near impassable. I don't care what they did it was definitely one of the most difficult.

The approach to Guardrail has never been challenging to me  Guardrail itself is the obstacle and that's still difficult in the right conditions.

Helicopter Pad, once again not difficult getting to it but goign up it. That also depends on the weather.

The crossing after Fain's has never been nor never will be challenging. If you mean the small wall to the left, I can agree but from my understanding people were never supposed to go up that in the first place.

The bridge over the deep water... ok, yeah that was fun.

Lower 6 was turned that way to make for more parking up the hill. I didn't build up my tow rig, just my jeep.

The temporary closures are just that, temporary. I wish you had been with us in Nov and Dec and I think you might have changed your tune. October was dry as a popcorn fart and anyone could have made those trails look easy.

I walked down and back up slickrock last fall just to see what it was all about. They've done tons of grading and grass planting. I would be surprised if they opened it again.

New updates.

"Here are some updates.
Georgia Trail Riders have stepped up to run the rock crawl comp.
I can't get any of the manufactures to commit to raffle gifts. (If anyone can help that would be great!)
I got verbal permission from the County on a noise permit for a Band. (Still Looking).
Reservations are coming in. I filled 6 sites today, but still have many available. We can hold about 300 persons between the cabins and campground. Please call in and reserve your spot so I can keep a somewhat accurate head count for the BBQ. Really don't want anyone to miss out on some of that good ole Manny's BBQ. I even paved the pavilion so no ones boots get dirty and the tables don't lean with the lay of the land anymore.
It will be great to see a 200 people out on the trails for the maintenance day. FS will see how much support that Tellico has and who their real friends are!"

and

"Another detail just in. Manny will have breakfast avail at the campground for Sat and Sun. So, you don't have to really worry about loading up the cooler with a lot of food. I love it when a plan comes together!"

are you looking for a band to play the gig if so let me no i have a friend that has a band they play anything from country, southern rock, and some blues
