The Eclipse gloom and doom traffic thread

I watched here in Huntersville at the power plant on the south side of Lake Norman. I think the Charlotte area was suppose to be around 98% or so. I was surprised at how bright it still was with only 2% of the sun.
Yeah, I was expecting it to be much more like dark. Apparently the outside of the sun is the bright part, not the middle.

Coolest part here was watching the crescent shaped shadows.

Ok so how long before I can see out of my right eye? I didn't have the eclipse glasses so I used a telescope.
You'll be fine. Now that the crescent has switched sides, just look at it through the telescope with your left eye.

The Charlotte news made a special point yesterday of warning people to not stop on the side of the highway to watch the eclipse, because it was dangerous and illegal.
They've sent out several emails at work lately about "eclipse safety". This morning they sent out another one that really impressed me: "
Just a reminder… this afternoon, be careful to NOT LOOK at the sun during the eclipse. If you are inside the office buildings with windows, you can draw curtains if able or just avoid looking directly at the sun. "

Just like any other day, right? I mean really? We need an email about this?

I think whoever sent out the warnings about darkness and what not really missed the mark in Goldsboro. There was absolutely zero change in brightness and had you not known there was an eclipse, would have been a normal day like any other.

What a let down. :(

We went down to Columbia today. No good pics like the ones above. It got pretty dark, but not dark like all the hype- I saw a couple planets but no stars. Almost like a night with a bright moon, for example.

Still, was worth the trip. We went down around 10:30 and left the second it started getting lighter. It was amazing how quickly it got light again.

I just got home from Madisonville. It's usually a 2.5 hour trip, lots of traffic heading home and it took us about 3.5 hours. Traffic only stopped one time on 40. It was dark like just before sun comes up in the morning. Lots of stars and other bodies in the sky. It blew my mind when it got almost dark, wind picked up, dogs started
howling. Then when it turned completely dark the sun's corona was amazing to see.

I loved every minute of it and it was worth the drive and small cost in gas and lunch. My kids freaked out when it got dark, but I think they liked it too. But, I may get more excited about stuff like this than others. I started making my plans and put it for vacation at work over a year ago when I first heard about it.

During the eclipse, i morphed into a short ugly cynical white dude with a shitty attitude.
And i was an Anarchist!

Another day in the neighborhood.

I'm Glad Some saw it!!! I was Damn near looking at it, & Never saw it. WTF? I went to Mountain Island Lake, thinking that'd be Cool. Just as I got there around 1:45, there was a haze some news folk talked about. As I walked down the Full Sun trail, I "Thought" a Cloud came over. Temp dropped maybe 2 degrees, as WBTV said, but I keep glancing at the Sun, & it's Full Bore. Within a minute the temp was back up & I was getting sunburned. I Stayed out there for over 2 hours, & Never saw the Sun Dim! THAT? Was it? 98%? SO Odd the news even said Gaston folks were disappointed in the show. But Yet Other News, said Hickory had a Good view. NOW I know what Fake News is!

Well traffic is still in standstill with people coming out of wnc trying to get to I-40
We shut down at 12 due to traffic, so did local utilities and the concrete plant after they had two trucks setup on the way to a job

I've never seen so many cars on Hwy 11 in SC.
Viewed from Sassafras Mtn, it was cool to see it get so dark and have a sunset on the horizon for 2 minutes.

Pshhhh....Y'all had it easy.

I was 10 miles up the wateree with just me and the boat when it hit. Actually I was pulled up to a sandbar and about 1/4 mile back up in a heavily wooded old growth jungle with 800 lb wild hogs and 7 foot long copper-headed rattle moccosins, completely butt neked climbed half way up a tree when it happened. (It's really fun. You wouldn't understand). Had to run full speed back to the boat before it went full blackout and damn near got lost in a briar thicket with spiders as big as my hand.
Favorite part was seeing the sun reemerge and the neon purple flash it made. Coolest thing I've seen in a while.

The woman got a great shot, and the others are from a buddy at work.

We were in Hayesville, NC and a two hour trip back took five plus hours. 100% totality with over thirty friends on the lake. It was all worth it.

Well things in Crossville, TN went smoothly. We got a tip that a local community college satellite campus was hosting folks in a giant parking lot and field. Showed up this morning to a crowd of... nobody. They said they'd had > 200 register... I guess maybe 40 total showed, including our group of 12. Was really nice and mellow. Observing totality was quite awesome, kids loved it. My 12 y/o said it was totally worth the trip... my 6 y/o girl... not so much...
No traffic at all getting there and none leaving.
We did see on Google Maps, I 40 east toward Knoxville was pretty bad, and all of 75 between Chattanooga and 40 west of Knoxville was a mess.
Being in a small town nobody had any reason to go to worked out well. No gloom and doom traffic.

We did get a great tip from a hobbyist at the hotel this morning - he was going to a giant memorial gardens (e.g. graveyard) way outside of town. Thought that was a great idea - big open space, nobody would think to go there, plus the overall creepy/cool factor of it.

We had random clouds covering the sun up to about 30 minutes prior to C2, made everybody nervous but after that it stayed clear just long enough.

Traffic headed home was so extremely light in my direction you would have thought the Rapture happened. Traffic coming back towards Arden / Assville on Airport was backed up pretty good.

I enjoyed it from my driveway. Unless you had eclipse glasses you wouldn't have known anything was going on here.
