The re-birth of Callalantee

She could of been the type to just of closed the park down. In that case everbody would be bitching about not ever being able to wheel there ever again. My 2CENTS is pay it or don't go!!!

WILL A MOD PLEASE LOCK THIS THREAD ALL THE BS IS MAKING MY EYES BLEED AND I JUST THREW UP IN MY MOUTH.
What a wuss.
Gut up there Ms. Brandon. LOL!

Hey Rox. I know I let myself get roped into this discussion. Its really not that I agree or disagree with you whether or not the kids costs are too high. As stated, my kids are grown, so I really have a much smaller stake in the fees deal. My issue is, and has been, as stated before, that everytime someone posts anything about Callalantee, you go on a "fees are too high" rant. Thats what is getting old. A sort of constant hijacking of someone else's thread to post your opinions on Calla's fees. And that has no effect towards change. I believe everyone should have their opinion on the cost of wheeling, and if there is an issue, take it to the landowner. But dont keep coming on here and smearing the place every time some one sez "Callalantee".

Might I recommend your own, "Callalantee's fees are too high" thread? And let the discussion take place there. Maybe the powers in charge will look in and see what comments are being made there?

Crozet is awesome from what I've seen on youtube, here and pirate.I don't think(could be wrong) a stock truck could enjoy the weekend without major bordom or damage.
(disclaimer: never been there I've only seen it on the internet,so please forgive me if I'm incorrect.
Is it open to the general public year round?
***************************************

I'll answer this. A stock rig most likely will be dragging. 31's are realistically a minimum. And skid plates. There is very little trail riding. It's just rocks, big and little.

Unfortunatley in all the video's and pictures you see it's only the big rocks. We are working towards getting rid of that preconception. I'll be there in a couple weeks with the mind to get lots of pics and video of the smaller rigs. Then I'll start posting more info about it.

It in not open to the public year round. But it is open to members year round as long as you have a second rig with you. Even weekdays. It only costs $25 for a yearly membership. Plus they have a flat fee for unlimited and that way you don't need to pay the weekend fees. And members who guide at open events wheel for free.

There are constant improvements happening.

I myself really enjoy this place. Armor All trail is probably one of my favorite trails I have ever driven. That being said I will probably not go back until there is a price decrease in passengers or a decent yearly pass price established. All of you saying that those of us that are expressing our opinion about the price increase need to stop complaining or quit whining need to really mind their own business. What we are asking and saying about is to the owners and managers of the park not you. I have 2 kids and would love to take them wheeling with me but at 11 per person per day just to ride with you is getting a little crazy. It is approx. 45 minutes to 1 hr longer for me to go to Harlan KY from Asheville towing my rig. Those of you who honestly go to both and wheel can't say that they are very close in comparison wheeling wise. If you are going to do this kind of price change you better have awesome obstacles and plenty to do for more than a day. Why not offer up a group day to come and help as wheelers and have some assistance in marking trails, cleaning trails, and other things of the like that could be quickly accomplished with manpower. This is just my 2 cents and how I feel about it. I used to really push my friends to go there and try it out and tell them what a cool place it is and now its still a cool place to wheel by just a lil money hungry...... in a recession. Last thing is about having to pay to have some assistance to get off the trail from the owners. First of all if you are wheeling by yourself then don't do crazy stuff or your not very smart. Second I would hate to see someone on the side of the road broke down, out of gas, stuck with their heads in their hand and pull over to them and say I will be glad to help if you wanna come off of some of that money I know you have.... look at what car you drive I know you have plenty of money. What happened to helping people out of the goodness of your heart? I guess it's another way for people to make money off of Tellico closing. I miss Tellico.

Thankyou hadfield.I didn't know that,good info.
6 months ago, callalantee's future was bleak.
It was going to be taken over and sold as big lots and subdivided.
My Toyrun was probably going to be the last thing that happened there.
There was bad managment and the campground was not making money.
Thanks to the 172+ rigs and people that came out to give toys for our local kids, when I told paul this that Sunday, and thanked him for helping the kids he smiled and said"you guys really like this hugh?you doing toys next yyear?"....I said "yes sir,if you'll let me"...we shook hands again, and said bye.
1 week later he put his daughter in charge of callalantee campground, and this is when this all started.
She had run campgrounds before.
She didn't believe people even rode on the rough roads in the mountain.after all the bashing via phone calls that wen/thurs,when I went up there Friday she thought we were a bunchh of crazy beer drinking rednecks.
She was constanly hounded by people "telling" her what to do.
It took several visits to have her trust me and show her we(as a community) really wanted to ride, enjoy and help her with the trails since she "didn't know" that side of the business she was thrown into.
We talked and she is 100% campground lady now.
She has improved what she knows about the campground.
Spotty 20 amp elec,is now good 20 amp,30amp and even 50amp sites.
They cook for people camping at a good price..
The outside of the bathhouse was painted and the inside cleaned.
They are putting down tiles this winter in the bathhouse for looks and function.
They cleaned the mosqito pond and it now looks good with no bugs.
They have marked the campsites,to code, yes I said that.there are regs for this stuff.
Now onto what she didn't know the trails.
Members of NC4x4 have stepped up and we are re_gps's the park for a new map this spring.
We are marking all intersections and will be naming (our) trails.
We will have several marked routes,so people can follow signs for different trailrides.
There are several groups expanding trails andmaking new ones.
Heard BadAss is almost doable??wow cool.
So we have covered what we no the trail system, and folks you may not realize it,but its damn cool to have free roam in where we make and mark trails.
The fee's will be looked atthis winter(or so I was told.

And finally this thread is/was ment to be a place to show improvements and hear what people want out of the park THAT WE THE 4x4 COMMUNITY can change, pretty much all I have to say is "Neeta,it'll be cool and the trucks will love it,and it helps the atv'rs out.
Sorry for long read

Any new word about pricing? I know the deal with passengers they kept saying just wanted to get though some holiday. Have they lowered it yet? What about yearly or monthly passes? What about charging per vehicle instead of per person?
^^^^^What he said.
Btw, this part of the discussion was started by someone else, I just initially echoed his question.
Any further posts were simply in response to remarks that all of us who think some reconsideration in the fee structure should take place should choose a different sport or hobby.
Hey Rox. I know I let myself get roped into this discussion. Its really not that I agree or disagree with you whether or not the kids costs are too high. As stated, my kids are grown, so I really have a much smaller stake in the fees deal. I didn't hijack I seconded Gubni's question and from there the "forget about the fees and deal with it or get out crowd" started posting. I only responded to those. I have not ranted I have been emphatic about a topic a lot of us are interested in. A good discussion never hurts anything and can lead to resolutions. In every post i have made, it has been with the intent of intelligent discussion granted sometimes using absurd illustrations to make a point. My position is what is good for the entire community not just family wheelers or single riders. If you or anyone can intelligently discuss why our position is so wrong I'm listening.

I will start that thread, with a poll. If people are honest I guess we'll have an answer.

I'm glad they are making improvements and as I have said I'm sure they will succeed.
The fee's will be looked at this winter(or so I was told.
Thanks Doug for answering the question that started all this.

450 dollars for a locker but 11 bucks for a day of fun for a kid is a problem? i know i am smarting off when i should keep my mouth shut but i just don't get it. we are donating and raising money to fight to keep national forest land open, witch from what i see is quite a struggle. fighting the system leaves very little control in our hands.on the other hand a private park is not so cut and dry. instead of bad mouthing and boycotting them,we should be glad that someone is trying to make money at it. the reason i say that is that there is not enough people that are into our sport that are able to open a cheap public park. it sounds to me that when the daughter took over it went from a bussiness that was run for the love of the sport to someone that has no intrest in the the sport but saw a possiabilty of a bussiness for proffit. she could have sold it and that would be the end of story but she is making a go of it. like it or not but we need private parks because the national parks are a crap shoot from year to year. if you do the math, the extra money you spend over top of what you were spending to go to this place can't be more than a coupla hundrend bucks in a years time. i am sure that people like jc and others that spend a lot of there time fighting for us would just as soon throw a coupla extra bucks at the ticket gate and go wheeling.

I'm glad to see the improvements. I have said this in every post. I won't pay the increased rates.

As a business person if I want to expand and build a new building can I call all my customers and tell them I'm going to raise their prices temporarily to help pay for this? No. They are not a charity for me.

I understand it was managed poorly and a bunch of people were there without paying and that sucks and is quite frankly stealing as far as I'm concerned. But the way I see it, is I'm now having to pay for Callantee's poor management. .02

I'm done I'd only be repeating myself.

450 dollars for a locker but 11 bucks for a day of fun for a kid is a problem?...

most people pay with a credit card and have months to pay it off :flipoff2:

it breaks down to the fact that everyone is dfifferent and manages their money different. Some people have better jobs than others.

What pisses me off are the ones that say you need to take up basket weaving or pottery. KMA, why can't I enjoy what I like to do to? I recently had a baby, my wife had to leave her job and we're now a single income home. I pay for everything and I still want to enjoy my hobby. It's almost like trail riding is the new country club. If I can't afford the lifestlye then I guess I'll go without. you do realize that "your" (used to be "our") hobby entails building a vehicle that literally rips up the earth with every tire spin? it must be nice way up there on your pedestal. what a bunch of assholes :shaking:

Pretty sure you're the only one talking about anybody being up on a pedestal or being an asshole.

really? so what kind of conclusion do you gather from someone that says that they need to take up another hobby if they can't afford to pay $11 per person and should take up pottery?

:shaking: right back at 'cha

I don't gather any conclusion. They made a point. They didn't call anybody any names in order to make it.

The way I see it:

The folks at Calla raised rates.
Their motives for raising rates are irrelevant. It's their place, they can charge whatever they want.
If you don't like the new rates, pick up the phone and tell them so. Tell them you won't be back until it's cheaper.
If they make enough money to keep the place open or turn whatever profit they think is fair, then fine. You just don't wheel there anymore. It sucks, but such is life.
If they don't make enough money, they shut the place down, and you don't wheel there anymore.

It's their place, they can run it however they want. If you don't like it, you don't have to go there. If it closes or makes a shit ton of money, it's all because of how they run the place, and it's none of my business.

You sir just don't get it. I'd love to run the BAJA 1000 but I can't afford to...now I don't get on desert race forums, whinning and bitching about the cost....I just don't go, that's the point that's being made here. I have no clue what you do for a living, but I'd be willing to bet if someone came to you and said...you're not worth "X" amount of dollars an hour, you're only worth "Y", your response would be .."well go get someone else to do it". Yes, I actually agree the prices for passengers are a bit steep there, but who the hell am I (or anyone) to tell someone what they can charge for use of there land? Holy freeking liberal, socialist, bullshit batman!

Free country bitches...like it or lump it....or get on the internet, bitch and moan about it!

One last note....funding a hobby on a credit card isn't good thinking either, that's the type thinking that got our country in the finacial mess it's in that the rest of the responsible people get to pick up the tab for.

Heh... I was thinking it... but I didn't say it. Figured that would be the straw that got this moved to the Garage.

actually I buy one thing at a time and my balance never gets over $500. I work and pay it off then I buy the next thing. I would never build an entire rig on a credit card and then try and pay it off. that's retarded. unfortunately i just don't have that kind of cash laying around. however, I can make smaller monthly payments and have what I need now to continue to build.

So when is the next trip? I need to get my mall crawler up there and check out these improvements. Last time i was there, felt like there really weren't that many trails but what there was, was awesome. Can't wait to go again and see if i can break my d30 wit those 37" creepies.

I am down for the winter(rig change) but look forward to being at the new and improved Callalantee trails.
Thanks everyone for the hard work you are putting in up there!

Chip, let me know when you go out with the new rig, be glad to help work the bugs out on the trail.
