The songs you know by heart

I absolutely love music of all types. I honestly cannot remember the lyrics to not one single full song. Never have, probably never will. I chalk this up to name and date recognition as well.
This sounds like my wife, but she just makes up her own words... when singing a song she's sang 1000 times. Example. Pink Floyd - Wish you were here.

"How I wish, how I wish you were here
We're just two lost souls
Swimming in a fish bowl
Year after year
Running over the same old ground
AND HOW WE FOUND
The same old FISH
Wish you were here"

So long and thanks for all the fish!

Had a bit of a power struggle with a high school chorus student teacher...as discipline, she thought she'd embarrass me by making me sing a solo in front of the class. I embraced that shit, and she learned a very valuable lesson in never letting a high school kid pick their own song. Went over so well for me, I ended up entering the talent contest and won the comedy division...

Man I loved Hayseed Dixie in my school days. Went to see them at the Lincoln Theater in Raleigh. Great show.

I know so many, when I first saw this thread Paridise by the dashboard lights popped into my head immediately, influenced by hanging with my older sister in Cincinnati, for spring break when I was in high school, then I saw meatloaf in this dive bar, one of the best concerts I've been to once he showed up 1.5 hrs late. Then got free beer all night (I was 17, lol) and the duder in front of me was trying to get his girlfriend drunk. Everytime he went to get her beer she gave, me her glass.
Mostly 70s southern rock, NIN, Alice in Chains, Helmet, Beastie Boys. And I can't get it out of my head but Britney Spears songs since I have a 27 year old daughter every now and again Charles Orff, Carmina Burana but I don't know the words......

I have a lot of his CDs ..... and know most of his songs.
Most people only know this one, and maybe Fins or Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes.
It mostly stems from my love of the ocean and beach and the fact I want to sail everywhere he sings about ( Bucket list Thread)
He in fact has an album with the same title as this thread Songs you know by heart.

Being a bit of a musician helps too.

Chris was infinitely talented. Depression and drugs took another genius.

Oh man, that whole Audioslave album is incredible. I remember driving down to Florida a couple of years ago and playing that album over and over. "Getaway Car" is such a fun song to sing when your in the car by yourself.

Cochise is fun in a car.

It Doesn’t Remind Me is sort of an anthem for me

Too many to list.... I love music. I can't play and can't sing but love music. Southern Rock is probably my favorite. Love me some Drivin' N Cryin' You could say they are my college band.

One of the hardest questions to answer for me is: What kind of music do you like?

I remember events and people by songs. No way I could pick just one or two. One song reminds me of a girl I had to let go of. One reminds me of my time at a military academy. And most recently, one makes me think the the friend I recently lost to suicide.

That said, these always hit me in the feels:

Most recently:

True story.I had a girlfriend in the 11/12th grade, 1983/84. She was stunning and ready to play around again and again everyday/night when we had time alone and that was about every day and night. When we left high school she went to Campbell, I went to WCC. In a week she was gone, I could not reach her on her parents phone, they would not answer. I drove by her house looking for her car and drove to Campbell to look for her but I realized she was moving on. I was broken. Time went by and I met other girls but I never got Susan out of my head. Years later I heard this song for the first time, I was driving down the highway and I thought of her again and I cried. I remember her every time I hear it again.

Is that a real poncho, I mean is that a Mexican poncho or a sears poncho? Um, no fooling.
Zappa, if the music don't work the lyrics will.

Don't judge me...

"Wanna be a baller, shot caller, twenty inch blades on the imapala..."

Every time I hear this it takes me back to the glorious Marine Corps and us all singing this while digging fighting holes or other crappy tasks with my homies. On the rare occasion I catch it on the radio, I be blastin'.

And of course...

"Power in the money, money in the power, minute after minute, hour after hour!"

I learned the entire song in 7th grade for some reason. Never forgot it. I wanted this to be the 'theme song' that played during my wedding rehearsal dinner montage... but that was voted down pretty quickly and we ended up going with 'I go back' by Kenny Chesney instead...

This song hits me right in the feels. Reminds me of my grandpa. Me and and my first cousins all grew up together on my grandpa's farm. 5 chicken houses, cows, horses, the whole deal. My cousins graduated high school and moved off to college in Greensboro thinking they where hot shit. Always bragging to my grandpa about how much money they could make without working like he did. He always told them hard work was the only way to make money. They didn't listen for a few years, always saying they where going to get rich just like some guys they met (pyramid scheme bull shit). Both my cousins both work full time jobs now. Doing fine, but nothing like they envisioned to begin with lol. But there is always a long row to hoe whether you live in the city or out in the country.
