Getting his school work for the rest of the year at the "drive thru", why we didn't get the "free" meal, we are still working, other people need them more than we do!

This is hitting me harder than I thought it would.

"The food is going as long as it will in the county." (This is for kids)

What can we do to help?

Kids are my soft spot too. Locally churches are doing backpack programs...and I know at one point in time the school system was too when they were dropping off lunches...both programs were taking donations, and the churches were taking volunteers. Probably worth reaching out to someone at your church to see if they know of any programs and seeing if you can get in contact with your school systems public information officer.

I think its a great opportunity to teach.

We aren't getting the free lunches because our family is blessed and Mommy and/or Daddy have worked very hard and have been lucky and we have plenty to eat.

Instills the value of work and the concept of grace and charity.

We are getting the free lunches, we didn't the first couple weeks, but then were hearing that there wasn't enough participation so they were having to lay off bus drivers/cafeteria workers, so we started getting them (I have a friend at the bus garage, plus we had talked to Corbin's bus driver). They have still cut back on drivers and consolidated bus routes---which is GOOD because it saves county funds, but bad because it puts drivers/other workers out of work.

I’m from a poor area with a lot of drug problems and I’ve got a lot of family that’s either in the school system or was, and quite a few that taught special ed.

I’ve heard stories, and seen things, and met the kids and parents involved with stuff that would make any normal person see red or choke up a bit.

There are kids that really need help out there and the child protection and home service were stretched way too thin before this pandemic. It’s only got worse.

The one good thing about it is it gives the boys something to look forward to every day, I imagine 5 years from now they will say "remember that time school was closed and we got lunch off the bus, that was cool!". Although we missed the bus all last week because they changed the schedule and we didn't figure out the time changed till Friday (they didn't tell anyone!). We are at the end of the road so we have to walk up to the stop, doesn't just come in front of our house.

my girlfriends mother runs a school cafeteria. and is the lead for getting the funding to keep the program going. The funding is coming from # of meals provided. the more meals being taken the more the Gov. is willing to help feed the kids. its ass backwards but if less people take the food they start cutting the funding.

In addition to the suggestions above, I do know assistance is on the way for the families that have kids who receive free/reduced lunch. The state will be issuing pandemic electronic benefits "P-EBT" (essentially Food & Nutrition Services) to assist with purchasing food.

For households currently receiving Food & Nutrition Services, they are receiving the maximum benefit amount for their family size. They'll be eligible for P-EBT in addition to their monthly allotment. Let's just hope they use the benefits responsibly ;)

We did the same, for the first few weeks we didnt take them. The school sent out a message to everyone asking them to take a lunch or multiple, even if they didnt need it, so they could continue providing for the ones that did.

Get the free lunches, get extra and take them to family members. Farmers are leaving vegetables in the field and we are dumping milk because there’s surplus with kids out of school and places closed.

It is a shame that we cant send all the surplus to another country or somewhere that could use it. I know that costs money and someone would have to cover that cost. Maybe it also would create an issue in that ecosystem down the line as well.

Our school system here is delivering on the bus routes. Breakfast and lunch everyday

Got behind one of those buses today in rural Surry county with very limited passing opportunities. I hate buses in general because I'm as patient as an ADD squirrel on crack when I'm behind the wheel anyway, but DAAAAAAMN....I thought waiting for kids the walk slow as hell to the bus to go to school was painful. Waiting an eternity behind this stopped bus sitting outside a kids home, HOPING to grab the attention of somebody at home in the middle of binge watching some netflix series so they can pause it and walk all the way down the driveway at a snails pace to get a bag from the bus assistant....I felt 4 different blood vessels leap off my forehead.

Piss rant over....glad the little bastard has some grub now

The important question though is...'school zone' speed isn't enforced if it's not school time...so does a school bus, just become a regular bus if school isn't in session. Therefore, you pass it, and don't have to worry about all those extra pesky points.

A strategically placed bike rack on the trunk ensures "things" like that don't happen to me anyway :huggy: but I was "being safe"

To the original topic.... Trying to explain to your 4yr old that he will not be going back to pre-school and will likely not get to see any of his friends, for the last 3 yrs, again, because they live in a different district.

Maybe if .gov can come back from FL and think about the rest of the state, he could meet them at the park or something.

I'm going to ask the question, (elephant in the corner), is there anyone on here that needs help?

Food, child care, 10mm socket, some wrench time on the grocery getter, couple bucks to make ends meet, etc...
I would love for someone to come and keep my 9 and 15 year olds busy for about a month....

Yep. My daughter is in K5. We have a public Montessori option and Montessori K4/K5 are in the same class with same teachers for 2 years, then 1st/2nd are together. She's been with these teachers and some of the kids for 2 years and won't go back. We haven't told her yet. She absolutely loves school and her teachers. She's excelling, so we're not worried about her falling behind, but she'll be crushed.

We are different in that my kids will go back where they have been. But, it was sad last night when my daughter asked her teacher, in a Zoom meeting, what her address was. She told her she wanted to come see her and give her a hug.
