I have a '91 F150, bone stock 4x4 5speed 5.0 liter

Are there any mild trails that I can go 4x4ing on? I don't have a winch, and I am brand new to the off road thing...

I really think it would be fun to ride some trails...but I know I need someone to go with me in another rig...

I'm in Hickory, NC....

Is there anything nearby?

email me if you know of anything.

close would be brown Mnt, or Richland road, but not sure if Richland is still open. But brown is ope to the public with a trail fee

If you want to go sometime, I'm down to go!:driver:

Shoot, it's not bad at all! Everyone started, or should've started, wheeling with a stock rig. I started with an '88 Toyota 4x4 p/u then went to a CJ7 with a Chevy 350, Scout axles locked f/r, spring over and 35's. Wrecked my Toyota daily driver, so sold both to get a '97 TJ. Bought a Tahoe has a DD. Now the TJ is growing! Right now has 2" budget boost, chopped fenders and 33s. Saving for axles! Unless you wanna get bit by the bug stay on the road!

Thanks guys! I have yards to mow this Saturday and a wedding to go to Saturday night, but I'll definitely be in touch the first free chance I get...

And after I get my caster camber problem (see the axles and suspension forum) fixed and some tires with a bit more tread...

Mine's a just-about stock 1990 S15 Jimmy, with a 3" body lift over 31's, and I've been over a good bit of Uwharrie with the S10 Extremists. The only time I really needed help getting over something was when my 4wd quit on a slope. After lopping off a bit of vacuum hose that was leaking, and putting another back on that had come loose, I had no more problems. (Knock on wood...)

Now, I still haven't tried it while it was WET...

Where do I start with my truck? I guess I need to do something to make it more trail worthy. I'll be gettng some mud terrain tires soon. My F150 is stock height and has a new tranny and clutch/pressure plate. I've been told that 1 of my upper ball joints is bad. I guess I need to have all of those replaced.(?) After that...what do I do next?

I'd start out by just getting a good set of tires. If you plan on driving on the street a lot, grab a set of good all-terrains. If you don't do a lot of street driving, go with a set of muds. A good set of tires is the best upgrade you can make in my opinion. Even lockers won't do you any good if you have 4 slick tires.

Well, it is not my daily driver, and once I get the mud terrain tires, I will probably drive it even less on the road than I do now. All I really use it for is for pulling a trailer when I mow grass and when I haul mulch or trash.

If I could get some free wheels, I'd probably get the mud terrain tires mounted on those, and keep my fairly slick all terrain 31"s

get some quality tires. BFG Muds work well for a DD...

Next, IMO, is a winch. That will save you lots of hassle and aggrevation when/if you get stuck...

I kinda figured a winch...won't I have to get a different bumper from the stock one?

I see all these off road vehicles and they have all this "fancy" front end stuff on them, as well as being lifted. Is that all necessary?

I really want to do a winch, and then that would probably be it.

Know of anyone who wants to donate me a winch and/or bumper:D ?

I got one from a TJ Jeep that I'm not using any more....

Easter Bunny

Bumper. And hey... I made it fit on a GMC. :D

I can build you one. They aren't that hard.

You can wheel a lot and have a lot of fun with a stock vehicle.

Winch bumper

How much would something like that cost? And I take it that you remove the stock bumper and put the replacement on...or can the bumper stay?

So here is your answer.

Brown Mtn: Very close to you and it costs $5. It's mostly an ATV park and taking those trails in a full sized rig will almost guarentee body damage. However, trails 1 and 8 are for trucks and you'll be fine. (Or so I'm told, I haven't been there.)

Uwharrie: Much larger and a lot of fun. It also costs $5. You'll do fine on every trail except Rocky Mtn. loop and Daniel. Actually, you might make Rocky Mtn. loop smoothly too, I'm sure an experienced wheeler could.

Oh yeah, look in the upcoming events folder in forums like this one or the cnc4x4.org site. You can tag along on runs with other people in case you run into trouble. Typical minimum equipment lists include a tow strap (no metal hooks), a fire extinguisher, a full sized spare, and some trash bags.
