Warning - the below article was written while I was captured on an alien ship from Mars. :alien:

All my life I have believed there is going to be a major collapse in society. Maybe there will be a disease that wipes out the majority of the population. Maybe it will be war. Recently I am thinking it will be much more simple. I believe our government will fail.

What I mean by this is that basic utilities will not be available. Imagine no electricity. That means no running water. It means no stores will be open. It means the gas pumps won't work.

Take this a step further. There will be mass starvation and dehydration. How many people died from Katrina? People will die by the millions especially in large cities. There will be roving gangs looking to pillage for supplies. There will be nothing but home owners to stop them.

So let's break this down some. What is going to cause this problem? When will it happen? What will be the signs?

If the government as a whole fails, then money will have no value and be of no use. This may be the first major problem which could lead to society collapsing.

We are already seeing the signs. "Change" happened. The problem is our current system of voting gives everyone equal votes. I don't think there is a better way, but I believe too many people live off the government by some form of welfare, work for the government, or are too stupid to know any better. To fix our problem will require huge sacrifice and the majority will never vote for that.

Unless we have civil war or something like that there will not be any significant change. They will brag about how the problem is fixed, but nobody wants to really take the blow to make it happen. They will tax businesses more. I am a business owner and I pay more taxes than I take home. The only way I have any extra money is by selling axles and disc brake kits which the government doesn't know about yet.

The one part I have no idea about is when will it happen. I feel it will be in my lifetime, but no idea if it will be 12-21-2012 or 20 years from now. For this reason I have to try to prepare for it to happen soon and still try to focus on long range goals in case it doesn't.

I believe in God and the rapture. This may be the rapture. It would only make sense. The bible clearly tells us about the signs, but will the signs be clear? What about all the birds falling from the sky last year? There have been other events too. The signs may have already happened. I think my purpose will be to remain here and to help others during this crisis.

I see this getting Garaged quickly.

But here's my 1st question for you - why would the basic utilities (power, water) ever actually stop? Our ability to extract coal and pump water isn't really dependent on currency value or foereign trade. Worst case these would be taken over as gov't utilities.
There really aren't any examples of other countries that have imploded and loat the basic utilities if they had them stable already. All the internal service infrastructure, yes, but at leats the lights would stay on. (the exception to this is war wheret he whole infrastructrure is intentionally taken down)
People will do everything they can to keep the power/water going for their family, even if it means working for free.

I too think society here in the good ol' US of A is coming to an end. There are ways to prepare for power loss with solar panels or generators. (Provided you can buy fuel.) More and more people are choosing to live "Off the grid" because they know they can't count on the govt to do anything right. I'm one of them. While I still live in an apartment, there are preparations underway and the house I'm looking at is on a well and has a septic tank and already has a backup generator installed. Check out www.offthegrid.com for some other ideas on what to do to prepare. (They want to sell you a bunch of stuff, but have some good ideas to survive the coming problems.) Oh and stock up on lots of ammo for those liberals who will be wanting you to give everything you've stockpiled "for the good of the community". Also check out www.offthegridnews.net for more good info.

Livin off the land dont sound so bad does it??? lol Horse back riding, farming hell its like the good ole days!!! hahaha I too think this will happen eventually but not worried about it honestly i think if you have some type of drive you WILL SURVIVE! :)

One thing the gov't did fairly right, they did learn from Katrina.
It was a huge boom for my business in other markets. For example any gas station within eye sight of an intestate in Florida is now legally required to have a back up generator and either a permanent natural gas supply or a 7 day tank. (these tanks are sized at 100% of genset capacity and as a result typically have 14+ days of actual use and you can bet in a huge outage they would begin rationing that fuel)

That said..I think most dooms day scenarios look too big. What if the world wide web suddenly crashed? Life would stop in this country. Think not? Credit/debit cards instantly useless. Hard cash reserves are suprisingly low at most banks these days. Even if there is product if you can't buy it, society as we know it breaks down.

That said..I have a generator. A private well. A private septic tank. Some good frozen meat reserves and some ammo. A pond in the back yard stocked with catfish and rods and reels. I feel certain I could go 90 days without blinking an eye...after that things are different but I can still survive. I'd really like to have a traditional well on my propery with a manual retrieve system...but that is a tad extreme.( at least according to my wife)...

Once my 401k cot trashed I started investing in my beans and bullets fund.

I wont go into details, but I am very much ready to barter, and very much ready for people who'd rather try to take instead of barter.

If an enemy set off a few EMP's over the united states. That would wipe out the grid and all things electronic.

and that would cease our ability to burn coal and create electricity.... how exactly?

(and that would qualify as the one exception I mentioned)

What if there was a strike because the money the gov't issues was worthless?

That would only go on until the people on strike, their families and neighbors realizeed that they had no power. Then you can bet your ass people would still manage to get the work done to keep the lighst on.

Seriously, when sitting around with nothing else to do, facing starvation and cold, you think people won't do what they have to (e.g. work, even for free) to make life liveable for their families?

I don't knwo shit about shoveling coal into a furnace or repairing electrical systems, but you can bet your ass that if that was the only way I could get power to my family, I'd stop doing everything else, find a shovel and figure it out real quick.

i was living in jersey when the whole northeast blacked out back in 02....just those few hours without power was a nightmare...everyone was in a panic....traffic was a nightmare, accidents all over the place....was on the fire department and was out until the next morning on calls because power was coming back and fire alarms were going off like crazy...

I agree Gubni - cept for the whole losing power thing. If anything, i think our infastructure will change. We may trying going totalitarian or dare I say communist in order to revive our economy. But the future looks bleak. I am already making preparations to see what other countries have the best stability.. You know in Venezuela gas is under $.50 p/g! They have their own reserves just like us but I guess they dont owe borrowed money like us so their people dont suffer the concequences of govmnt. spending.. The land is rich and mountainous and seem like an all around great terrain to live off the grid. But thats not going to be anywhere in the near future.. I am just looking to get outta the states for a while and see what else is out there but with the hostility going on in all the other countries Im not sure a white american will fit in well with those genres.

Do you know anything about Venezuela? The country is one of the top ten crude oil producers in the world and so, yes, they have reserves and their gas is cheap... their oil production is nationalized. Also, their president is a radical socialist who hates America. Corruption is rampant, drug trafficking is bad and the homicide rate is one of the world's worst.

But the gas is only .50 cent per gallon.

Wait.

You're worried that the US is going to turn communist or totalitarian, so you're going to hole up in a totalitarian socialist state?

Glad yall got my point... Ha ha like I said, I am looking for something remote. I also stated the country is hostile and doesnt welcome americans.. It was an example folks! Yes they have crime and whatnot but at least their govt. isnt crumbling before them!

but at least their govt. isnt crumbling before them!

Uh... yeah, it is.

I mean, if you're worried about the collapse of western civilization and the rise of a socialist totalitarian state, I wouldn't suspect that the first country on your list would be one where that collapse is actually underway.

Ha ha thanks Berne.. So Alaska should be ok then right?

I think it is funny that there is a website about living off the grid, LOL.

Ok, I retract all my statement then.. next
