To 4.10 or not

So your saying you can't wait to do another one? My 2012 ram has 4.10 and I'm thinking of going 4.56, it works a little too hard taking off.
Yes sir. I'll put you on my schedule if you're serious.
Got this one, @Hokie_YJ thirds, local dooder's 60s and a local ARB install ahead
Shoot me a PM as needed.

I think the carriers are fine. @Jody Treadway should be able to verify.

ARBs are cool, but it's either open or spool. Plus, they're like 1200+ doll hairs...as with almost every traction device for an AAM 11.5 or 11.8. I wish they'd get an E-Locker for them though, that'd be sweet. Limited slip when off, locked when on.

That said, I want to throw 4.10s in my 02 as well. My mileage never changes from 65 to 90 mph and it would put me at 1900-ish RPM at 65 mph and the non VGT turbo would be much happier when towing.
For the 11.5 there are two limited slip/locker options.
2014+ Power Wagon AAM Tracrite GTL
Auburn Select-A-Loc

For the OP:
I think 3.73s are the ticket to get your computer/transmission happy again, if you are staying with a stock-ish tire size.
The clanking is probably that pinion nut coming loose and the pinion is pulling in/out a smidgen all the time. It will get worse, fixing it now is a 30 minute job before it blows the bearings up.

I knew about the GTL, but last I had checked, they were a dealer only setup and cost something like 2500 bucks.

I didn't know Auburn had a unit out there. I'm going to have to get me one of those!

Still not cheap but there are some GTL units in car-part.com now. They were not as available a couple years ago.

I should be picking up the truck tomorrow night after the gear swap. Can put some miles on it this weekend then have to head to Miami Monday to move some heavy (20k pound) boats around.

Figure I get a couple hundred miles on the gears, then change the oil and head south. Is that enough of a break in? What's the gurus say?

I can't speak for your installer.
But here's what I just told my dooder. Since I used high quality OEM AAM gears, drive it like you have common sense for a few hundred miles before towing. Told him he *can* do a post break in oil change if he wants to. But since the parts used were same as OEM, it wasn't mandatory to me.
I did the initial break in myself after the install.
Either way, don't go to synthetic until after full break in.

Also used OEM aam gears. Was hoping you would chime in. Thanks

Out of curiosity, what did you do for initial break in?

I have a route here at my shop. I take Hwy 25 (45 mph) about 10 miles to Hendersonville. Grab a coke and snack at a gas station and chill a few. Hop on I-26 back to the shop (10 miles). Check for leaks, top off fluid and call customer.

That is a most unusual and professional way of saying
4x 3,500rpm clutch dumps and a smoke show...

Picked mine up last night, did a 5 mile hop to the ATM. Then another 6 to get fuel, then 75 home. Ran 40 miles this morning to get gear oil and run some errands, about to do a other 40 home. Then changing the gear oil.

He put synthetic in so I'm dropping that and going with 85w-140. Then Monday I'm going to Miami to bring my boat back. Boat weighs around 18,000. So here it goes.

So far really like the 4.10's. At 75mph I'm at 1875 ish rpm and lie-o-meter says 20-21 mpg. At my usual 63mph it's in 6th and about the same rpm. 5th at 70 is 2100 ish. So ought to be about perfect for towing, temps, torque, economy, and if not then I'll go to 37's next.

So Jody would you go with 4.10’s with the G56. My 2014 just has never felt right with the 3.42’s. Stock tires. But 2nd is a little tall for what I like. When towing you need to run 76-78 to make 6th happy or run 5th 68-72. But it feels strained. Was thinking. 4.10’s and if too much jump go to 35’s.

I had a 15 with 35s, G56 and 3.42s. I never really needed more gear unless I was towing around 50-55 MPH. Felt a little sluggish at that speed. At interstate speed I was happy with it.
4.10s wouldn't hurt in your case.

Yeah I was thinking really hard at the time of selling this one for yours lol. Yeah it’s nice at interstate higher speeds. Just that 70 ish feels like I never have the right gear.

If 35's are in your future then go 4.10s, if you're happy with stock size then you could consider 3.73s. I don't think you could go wrong with either choice.

Makes sense. I have wanted 35’s and a little wider than stock. I’ll start looking for 4.10’s

First trip on the hwy. Lieometer is at 21mpg and cruise is set at 78 for a full tank, filled up and hand calculated a little more than 16mph...

But it's got lots of power and at that speed with 35's it's at 1950 rpm. Trans tune seems happier, truck feels like it's in the right gear all the time now and she pulls better.

Before the delete I was getting 15 on the lieometer so who knows what I was actually getting.

Anyway had to go fetch this rig out of downtown South Beach Miami this morning (absolute Mayhem getting there and worse leaving with it loaded). Splashed it at a local boat ramp and ran the boat north for more testing. But the truck pulled great. That little skiff weighs 18,500...
