too competitive?

Purpose

I am the same way as most, I guess. Sometimes I wish I had more machine under me when I can't do a certain line, but it does make me sit up and drive what I got. If I can't make it, I will go around or pull cable. I enjoy riding with the those who have more capable rigs, it is a challange.

"If I had a little more power, I could have made that."

do you ever feel like aspects of this sport are too competitive?
like the guy who says he crawled this or that. or the guys who takes shots at your stuff, or your work. or the constant one upper. we have all been around this guy, mr negative, and to me these people drain the fun out of it.
i realize this sounds bitchy, but am i the only one who picks up on this. i realize we spend cash on things and want to do well when we wheel, but isn't the point to just be out there and have a good time. that is what i look forward to when i wheel, a good time bullshitting and being outside.
really just provoking conversation....
You wouldn't like riding with me. I mean, my buggy would totally beat your buggy. :flipoff2:

(Just kidding :) )

Oh and ‘spotters’… You are not needed until you are asked for…until then, stand back and let drive… :flipoff2:

I'm with you there. Most people mistake my truck for being "stock" but with all the crap I've done to it (and years of wheelin' experience) I can get into, and out of, some sticky situations. People are always running over to spot or "help" and just get in the way...

...and then some people get their panties in a wad when I can get through things in my rig that some "bigger" trucks have issues with.

Let's all shut up and go wheelin'!

maybe its because I haven't gone wheeling much lately , or maybe its just because I have the "bug" so bad but I get excited every time I see someone with a 4wd. any mention of offroading and I just get happy it doesn't matter if they are driving a moon buggy or a jeep on 30in tires.

Can't judge everyone that has one tons as holier than thou types, at least I don't think I give that impression. I have a V-8, why? cuz I liked the sound LOL. I wheel with Larry, he don't pull cable very often at all. I wheel with John C, he don't pull cable much either. Both little four bangers, and both very capable rigs. I have wheeled with high dollar buggies, and I love it. I wheel with bone stockers, and enjoy that too. I enjoy the people I wheel with, if I don't I don't go with them again. I like going to rides and events, and looking at the nicer rigs. I have what I have, it's mine, and I built it. I don't down anyone for what they drive, unless it's unsafe. compete, not this guy, unless it's against myself.

I agree with your thoughts.....and I've heard a LOT of derogatory comments over the years from a LOT of folks.

:shaking:

alot of the comments I hear are driven by ego I am happy with my old Jeep but that doesn't mean that I will not upgrade when I do it's for me I like to wrench on my chit it keeps my home with the family & it's a good way to spend a little time with them or friends even if we don't get alot done we sure dispose of alot of:beer: I have some friends with stockers & their great to run with we do the general ribbin but we are all just kiddin & as far as someone I don't know I would not down them or their rig cause it's not as built as mine or built more than mine they probably like what they got as much as I like what I have

I'm glad to have found and read this post. I have been building mine for years now and it seems I never have enough to keep up. But yet, every time I wheel it, it surprises the hell out of me. I think there is alot a pressure put on people to over spend there budgets just to keep up with the "standards". I like my jeep. Do i want to keep building it? YES. But on my time frame and budget, not what I feel everyone expects me to do on certain web sites. I guess its like my Dad told me, "why open your mouth and prove your an idiot when you can shut up and just let people assume it"

I caused a buddy of mine several years back to get out of the sport, so he says. We both bought XJ's and both proceeded to turn the money hose on them, lift, lockers, tires, etc... when I put a cage, full widths chromo's etc... he bailed out. He claimed he couldn't "keep up"..I don't really look at it as my fault, heck wheel what you can afford but don't throw the towel in because someone has dumped more time or cash in their rig. I really don't give a damn what someone wheels stock or otherwise, my only problem comes when they want to put giant tires on small axles or take something out that has known problems. No, I don't really want to ride with those folks. I still play softball pretty damn competitivly and at 37 I'm not as good as I once was, but why stop playing? I still play golf, shoot in the 70s-80s, my buddy I have played with for years has put more time into than me and therefore beats me the majority of the time,am I going to quit? Hell no. Getting out of something you enjoy because you aren't the top dog is a character flaw more than a problem with the hobby. The rockrace at DPG was a good example of this, there were plenty of folks overmatched in the big tire class and we had some folks who didn't want to run because of this. However, there were others who didn't care they just wanted to try it out..kudos to them. All of us who helped put it on were ready to defend the Beast inc (bea-stinc) entry on this board and others if anyone gave Ricky a hard time. He came , he finished and he didn't break..he didn't win , but damn he was competing against several buggys. He didn't seem to care how he placed he just enjoyed taking part in it. That's what it's about to me, if someone wants to be a dick and cut on someone elses rig...fuggum, they have the problem.

Wheelin's just like any other thing where you have a group of people whether is business, sports, church, etc. You're going to have good apples and bad apples. I choose to ride again with the good apples and avoid the bad ones. Too little time left for B.S., I'm in it for the fun. The competition I have is with myself, to see if I can drive it the best it can be driven. Sometimes I win, sometimes I lose. Either way I have fun trying. Sure I like it when I make a hard line, but I don't knock others or their rig when they don't. My rig has lots of the "gotta have" parts but not so I can look good. It's so I can ride without the threat of breaking something everytime I go out :)

I mean I've def got the "bigger is better" bug myself, but at the same time talkin trash to someone else in a non jokeful manor is not something I like to see happen. Competition is great, being a dick is not, I just like to do the dang thing. If you don't like someone else's rig setup w/e, If you see something that probably needs to be adressed on there setup there's a nice way of letting them know.

The whole one upper thing is more of the additude a person portrays IMO, not neccesarily what they actually have. Its all about how you treat others, just cause you have the badest ass rig ever on rockwells tubed out etc as long as your not a dick about it to those that don't have the same stuff then thats all that matters.

<go.go.gadget.soapbox> ok for the sake of argument (i really don't care who ppl wheel with) Do those of you with large(r) rigs wheel with say someone on 31s ? Not talking just happen to be behind them at URE but more like 'hey ride with me today' stuff.

If there was a "All RIGs RIDE" where anyone could ride, would you ride (if able to) ?

Here's why I think it appears to be 'too competitive' early on I got some parts, lift, tires etc. I opted to lead many rides, being the guide. When the time came, many of those who appreciated the guidance moved on and up. Never looking back to assist those starting out. That leaves large gaps in the wheeling world where the next batch of people have to lean on each other more and form little groups of similar equipped rigs and then tend to stay along the same build path as to not 'be left behind'

What I'm trying to say is.... The its up to the more senior people to set the example. The whole walk the walk thing. Climb down from you buggy and walk over to that group of new jeeps and say hi. Go talk to that group of land rover idiots (ok j/k we all have limits :flipoff2:) You get the idea.

ON the flip side, don't be afraid to ask for help. I've sat behind a line of people who refuse help yet only needed a jack to change a tire. The 50 people behind you truly do want to help get you moving again. Stuff like that ALL contributes to the little world we all wheel in.. anyway.. </go.go.gadget.soapbox>

If there was a "All RIGs RIDE" where anyone could ride, would you ride (if able to) ?

I think that environment is alive and well at the playground. The Mud devils' have made a bunch of changes, and moderate rigs have gone all over the place there.. I doubt anyone's ever left feeling that there wasn't anything for them there.

OTOH, I'm on the fence about say, a URE trip, though about 2 years ago, I was in a ride like that, and did all the easy trails right with the guys on 31's. I was bored stiff during the ride, but the camraderie was great, and the guys really liked the diversity.. and knowing someone could get them out of whatever they got into..

Here's the other side of that coin..
Fuel ain't cheap, free weekends are hard to come by sometimes, and frankly, I've spent a shit-ton of money building my rig all to go out and get my 'fix'. Occasionally, just being out there is enough. More often though, I want to be really challenged.. I want to see all the work I've put into that damn thing pay off and have it work, and watch others do the same.

That ain't gonna happen on a Level 1 trail, and I want the most "bang for my buck"

If faced with the choice of 2 hours to the Oasis and wheel hard or 2 hours to a dirt trail, 9 times out of 10, it's gonna be the Oasis.

That's why everyone needs a "Herbie" rig, too...

My favorite place for that kind of ride is Callalantee. The built rigs can run the waterfall while the stock rigs go on the bypass. It has uphill traills with loose dirt that are kind of fun for everybody. Finally, armor all, pull cable, and little tellico are all together so you can pick your trail or just watch but you don't have to split up.

The club I wheel with the most, ncttora, has rigs from nearly stock to pretty darn capable so that's an issue we face all the time.

One thing about this "sport" is that there is a lot of turnover. Some guys are in it for the long haul, for many it's a fad/toy that lasts five years or so. It's mostly a young man's game, as far as the extreme rigs go. It seems that most people I meet on the trails are between 20 and 30 years old. I've owned my trail rig longer than a lot of current wheelers have been alive (I got it in 1986, 21 years ago).

No offense to any of the over-30's here, but younger guys tend to be more competitive and willing to spend the $$ to one-up their friends. Over 30, lots of things take that drive out of you....mortage, wife, kids, career, etc. Most of the over 40 wheelers I run with are much more mellow, less agressive, and have learned to have more fun with less.

(yes, I fall into the over 40 category)

Hey Rich, I just noticed the new sig. Nice.

It was certainly quotable.. (Not to take anything away from Stump and the exploding septic tank comment)

Yup.. my rockwell build is costing approx. the same as my friend raising his newborn for one year.. and that's BEFORE his son's medical bills.

Reason #573 why we're not having any: "Cramps your fun budget"

Reason #573 why we're not having any: "Cramps your fun budget"

Reason #1: I was 39 when I got married. At 39, you know a lot of things you didn't know at 25. If these 25 year old's knew what I know now....they wouldn't have kids either. :)

Reason #2: I'd probably be on social security by the time they got out of high school.

Reason #3: I couldn't stand to be dropping MY kids off at preschool, and a 20-something parent asking "which ones are your grandkids?"

I got about 1200 more.

I admit that I fall into the young category, although not trying to one-up anyone, I do spend more on this hobby than I should... and not just in money, but in time. Between the constant board-checking at work/home, the long nights in the garage, the weekends away from the beach/bar/lake/etc., and missed holiday events with the family/friends...

But I am finally out of school, with a "real" job, no kids, no wife/girl, and a house that's paid for already so I feel that I can justify some of my expenditures... where as some people have their priorities in a different order, and do what they can to be as active as possible within the sport. Since I'm not tied down, I'll make the long hauls to see trails that most can only see in the mags/boards, I'll pull all-nighters to be ready for the weekend, and I'll add the "high-priced" ticket items to my rig so that its one less thing likely to give me troubles on the trails.

That's why everyone needs a "Herbie" rig, too...

Its started out as a URE only rig and has slowly turned into a backup rig.

I'll bite. I admit I can be quite competitive at times. but its like some said before me, I compete against myself to see how far i can go. Do I always want a nicer rig???? sure who doesn't. If given the ability you all would have tubed out LS1 buggies too. Face it, sports by nature are competitive and we all want to have the braggin rights around the fire.

I dont mind being denied on an obstacle, it makes it more rewarding when you finally conquer it! I dont like to hear shit talking from people I dont know, i've come to expect it from the people I wheel with, its all in good fun.

oh yeah, my boy knocked up your honor student:flipoff2:

I know CYJKrawler did just this, invited me and my 30 inch tires up to callalantee with him and a couple others, and i agree, more people need to be like that
