Tow rig winch rope question

So this weekend my buddies and I went camping. I drove my truck so we could haul all of our gear up a logging road and keave all the other cars at the bottom. Did anyone realize it rained all day friday?? Yeah, I did, because it was a throttle and winch fest to get the long bed, extended cab 2500 ram up the mile long up hill logging road.

So from this I have realized I need to ditch the cable on the 12k winch on the front of the truck. What diamater should I go with to make sure it can handle this behemoth if the need arizes in the future?

Why do you feel you need to ditch the cable?

Personally, I prefer cable on a truck like this as I am likely to use the for things other than getting unstuck. I like the durability of the cable.

Maybe get a synthetic/bubba rope to add so there isn't as much cable exposed during winching?

That was originally my thought for keeping cable but after this extended length pull, the cable tearing up the box and the other rods around the drum since while pulling it did not pull back in uniformly. Maybe a shorter cable would work with bubba rope on the end. I couldnt even respool the entire line, so now I have to take it all out and respool

That sounds like a normal winching experience....it's never going to lay perfectly on the drum while you're using it.

This.

Part of cleanup after a wheeling trip is cranking the jeep in neutral, pulling out all the cable, and hooking it 100ft behind the explorer slightly uphill as an anchor and spooling in the winch as i walk in front wearing gloves guiding the cable back on neatly.

I agree; however, this was not a huge non-uniform wrap, meaning when I put it in exactly uniform, the last complete spool (from one end to the other) is gouging the control box. I either need a shorter cable or rope.

I have struggled with having too much rope all my life. You get used to it and you just have to be more careful where you sling it

I am glad someone has finally understood. I have always had to be careful too not sling the rope to hard, it could hurt someone.

I have a 94' wrap of amsteel 7/16 21,500lb synthetic on my 12k portable winch. Never had an issue with it. I keep the winch stored so the sun doesn't ruin the rope. Also carry a 30+ voodoo rope. Only had to use them once but what I invested in it all was less than the tow quote.

So which one of you SOBs wants to give me the "I told you so dance"?? Haha @Croatan_Kid @CasterTroy
I was meticulous with making sure each wrap was perfect. It has never fit this well on the tow rig.

I guess the jeep doesn't have this long of line because I have never had to be this precise with it.
