Trail etiquette

I called Mr. Foote today to ask him if he or any body at the FS had a CB radio. He said no. I then explained why I was asking. I told him that there were people that were not happy about some of the abuse the Forest is getting and were concerned. He was happy that this was brought to his attention.

I also asked if he would like to have a CB, he said that would be nice to "keep in touch". Eli the map maker called a little ago and said he had a antenna he would donate! I've got a CB that I'll throw in and.......there you have it! Give us a few weeks to get this arranged and we'll see what happens. Officer Foote will have to get this cleared of coarse and installed. Next is the channel selection.

If you have ever seen inside his patrol unit, you know there are several other radios that will have priority over a CB. Common sense will have to be used on our part also. But I beleive this a step in the right direction. If nothing else for a safety stand point as far as forest fires or some body injured or........

I'll update this from my side as I find out any info. Thanks Ely and all that see's this as a good thing.

Your Hot Dog Guy!

I let a Suzuki help get me unstuck from a boulder I wedged myself into. It was funny (and before I painted the jeep). They all stopped and got out their cameras =)) I had some ATV's that wanted to try even though I tried to tell them they wouldn't be able to budge a Jeep. They couldn't but the Zuk's did by doubling up the winch cable. I was appreciative and not a big enough ego head to not accept help.

You KNOW if us zuki drivers see a Jeep stuck we will knock our kids down to be the first to hook a strap to it. It's all in good fun, jsut part of the fun of off roading.

:usa:Lorenzo, I have no problem with that at all. Thanks for nominating me. Pretty soon I'll need a sexatary to keep all the paperwork! LOL Now if somebody could fix the lack of cell service, you could call ahead and make reservations! "Table for two?"

I have a little to add. one night while traveling down one of the trails a guy in an Explorer was coming up. He refused to move over so I did but my buddy behind me couldn't well while trying to slide by the guy he busted out his back window. the guy was mad but hey He could have moved over.
That big hole on Falls Damn got me too. I had no clue it was that Deep. Luckily I was idling when i hydro locked. I never knew that hole had got that deep. And there is nothing to indicate it being so deep.
Last one, 2.5 years ago my radius arms both broke on the trail coming down Kodak. Well i couldn't move and one spring had popped out. I borrowed a highlift and some ratchet straps and one guy was strapped behind me and acted as my brakes to get me down. What a long session that was and thanks to those guys for all their help.

I drink and like the idea of the rangers checking coolers. Drinking and wheeling have no place together.

I think JC's list is missing one key point,
Ride trails suited to your level of experience and modifications...
I'll never forget the two kids I came up on guardrail several years ago in a stock, I mean stock S10 blazer.
They were outside it "scouting a way out"... it was one of those, not sure how you got here, and not real sure where you are going moments....

Not really my list :), but.....could be covered by #1, "use only trails open to your mode of transportation". I wouldn't consider Guardrail as being a trail open to stock S10s :)

There was some discussion last year about putting up a banner or sign, probably at the two main entrances to the trails, with some type of admonishment about trail etiquette, rules, tread lightly principles, etc. But I am sure those would be destroyed or taken down in short order. Problem is, NOTHING will stop any of the things that have been mentioned 100% There are ALWAYS going to be those who will flaunt the rules and try to circumvent all regulations. Just the way life works.

I'm not against the CB idea at all, maybe it will do some good, but just like the group that got ticketed last weekend, too many times the dangerous offenders are not being caught and the FS is targeting those they can get to. Problem is the FS just doesn't have the manpower or equipment to police the area the way they need to, so maybe the CB idea will help nail a few offenders. What the FS needs, and what some groups such as SFWDA, CTB and others have discussed with Ranger Walker, is some way to get the FS 4x4 vehicles so that the trails can be policed properly. The problem is government regulations and finding a "FS partner" to donate a rig or two.

General trail etiquette guidelines for all users from Blueribbon Coalition:

• Respect all trail restrictions and use only trails open to your mode of transportation.
• Be considerate of others on the road or trail.
• When traveling on shared use trails, watch for other types of recreationists.
• Slow down when sight lines are poor.
• Keep speeds low around other recreationists.
• Keep noise and dust low.
• Downhill traffic yields to uphill traffic.
• Keep right, pass left.
• Stay on designated trails.
• Never ride alone.
• Maintain a safe distance between riders.
• Leave gates as you find them.
• Carry out your trash and some others’ as well.
• Keep your ears open – no ear buds for an iPod or MP3.
• Keep pets under control.

How hard would it be to add these to the back of a trail map?

They have at least 1 ATV but I think they have more. We used to seem the rangers on them in 2004 or 2005 (before Ranger Walker).

Good call burrellsjeep, duh, I'll get on that as soon as I get a little spare time! Where's that secratary?
