Need an opinion...

I have a line of cypress trees that I'm taking down. I have my second load of brush from it on the dump trailer, which was about 3 trees worth. I still have 10 trees worth, to go. My option is to keep hauling the trees and brush or to rent a chipper for the limbs and brush. I'll still haul the trunk. How bad will it suck to run all the stuff through a chipper by hand, vs loading up and hauling many loads. I priced having it all done turn key, but decided i wasn't spending that kind of coin.

Chipper won't be too bad, just make a bunch of small piles and then feed it. Or rent the chipper for a couple weekends. Most chippers with the hydraulic feed will eat everything up to about 12", 6-8" without a struggle.

Probably depends on what size chipper you get. But on another note, if you want those stumps ground up let me know. I'm in the stump grinding business.

Are your sure those are cypresses ?
Look like cedars on my phone. If they are eastern red cedar (like I suspect) sell the trunks

Biggest thing about Chippers & some other rental equipment, is find 7-8 hours Use for it! Get with some neighbors Or close friends, & have the work ready. If you rent it on a Saturday afternoon, you get to return it Monday! Just don't run it over 8 hours, or you'll pay for another day! Holidays, are the best! You have it for 2-3 days! Just watch that hour meter. Let your neighbors & friends, share your cost!

Some places will let you rent it a "half day" over the weekend, if you only put 4 or less hours on it, they knock some off the rental. Just be sure to refuel it before you return it.

Be super careful with a chipper. Those things will eat you and not care. I would have a “safety” person and all they did was standby with their hands on the stop lever

Something else i need to say is i need to haul off the refuse from the chipper too. So i need to catch it. Well, it would be best, instead of having to load piles of chips into the trailer.

Jeepinmatt actually has a monster chipper. It just hasnt run in two years. So he'd probably burn the chipper down.
3.5 years actually. It's a sore subject.

Kinda hard to tell from the pics, but I agree with @Ron. Those look like eastern red cedar. Trunks might have some value if you can find someone to buy them or have a need. But the branches are really effective at clogging up a chipper, so I would recommend the fire method in this case. And if they are reasonably healthy, I would leave em, as they are good trees and I like them.

You can shoot it right into the bed of a pickup.
Careful though, don't do this to a truck you care about the paint on.

I'm about 90% sure base on the pics that's a juniperus virginiana...i.e. eastern red cedar.
The only Cyprus native to mc is the bald ( marsh area and farther east) and pond Cyprus.
I don't think either would get that size on that site even if introduced.

If they did the "bark" (phloem) should look different than what I see in the pic, granted its a small phonenscreen.

Not trying to pick nits, but it's a significant difference in what id do with the waste.
And ERC is a natural anti pest..it will keep yellow jackets, mosquitos and other nuisance species away naturally....I really wouldnt cut them down.

....I really wouldnt cut them down.

Fair enough on the rest of your comment, but they have to come down. They are dying. I have lost 3 already this year. They are going to fall on my shop, my neighbors fence, or my trailers. Time for them to go.

Don't you have a tractor? Assuming it has a loader bucket drop the trees and then pick then up and sit them on the trailer. With a backhoe and skid steer I hauled off 35 leyland's 2 at a time on my trailer. Pushed them over with the hoe and then cut them in half. Didn't have tar to haul them luckily, they were sometimes hanging off the back of the trailer by 10'.

The best advice I can give though is don't cut them down, go ahead and get the excavator and push them down. You will have a MUCH easier time getting those stumps out with a mini ex if you have the tree to use as leverage. Stumps that size you will be there for awhile to 'dig' them out.

And on the Cypress/cedar discussion, they look like Cypress to me. I have about 20 at the new house I need to take down....

Dad has a crappy old Ford backhoe. Im not dealing with trying to get it running.

Yeah, i remember you talking about pushing them over. That's a day late and dollar short for several of them. Whatever equipment i use, i have to rent, so i was really unsure in what direction to go. Will a mini ex under 10k pick up 10' logs?

A 7500lb mini ex will probably pick up 3 of those trees at the same time.

Yea, just rent you a mini ex, it will do whatever it will do, but I can guarantee it will be WAY easier to get the stumps out if the tree is still attached. The backhoe I used was the Unimog version, so equivalent to a Case 580 I think it was. It had a single tooth 'ripper' on the back of the bucket that worked great for cutting roots . I still had to ''work" to knock the trees down, but I can guarantee it was a lot less work than you will have digging up those stumps haha.

If you MUST cut them first, just cut them as high as you can reach. A 6' tall stump will be way easier than a 2' stump.
