unmounting 53" XL

So I guess changing a tire on the trail is out of the question, eh? :flipoff2:

And now you see why most people with xl/xml's have double beadlocks. :flipoff2:
Don't see why that would matter - I took the bead off if you are referring to the way the wheel looks at this present time - I still can't pull the damn bead lock side through the tire. Thanks for the helpful tip though

A double beadlock is a split rim wheel. Just unbolt the wheel halves and you're done.
Yeah, I talked to a military buddy and he said they come already mounted? Dunno, but he was in for four years and never dismounted one??? That would be handy to have the hummer type rim, but I would like to try and use these being 20 inchers. That's what you are talking about right?

How did the loader work? We had to use the blade on the mini-x to hold down the tire. Then just repeatedly jerk bucket up. only way we have found to do it. You will get better at it after the 4th or 5th one. Let me know if I can help. Worse case you could bring them up and we could help.

tw89yj - the loader didn't work that well, but it will when I have something to hold the tire down. I think I will probably find two trees to the hold tire and just start backing up. The rim did start to come out of the bead, but the tire bead would bulge out and I would pick the whole thing up off of the ground. That is a good idea you had and is probably what I will have to do. Installing them, hopefully, will not be this bad. I will keep my fingers crossed.

I also called Sean at Stazworks and he said he manually changes them and it is tough. He said it takes him about one hour per tire to change with tire spoons. His first one took him 6 hours before he got the hang of it.

We always sent our HEMMT tires to the intermediate maintenance shop for mounting/dismounting.. (the ones you have) They must have some big ass machine to do it.

We only did Hummer tires ourselves.

rich kind of OT, but is it true that the military just cuts up the tire to get the runflat out of it?
edit - im talking about the rubber ones like i have

Guys,

I just called Miller Heavy tire and they want like $200 for dismounting all four of them - he would only give me one hint - He has to use the crane mounted on the truck - I passed one of their rigs this morning coming to work and I saw a fixture used for holding tires to the bed of their trucks - sounds like I am on the right track with the tractor.

Dunno.. the few I changed had mag inserts in them. Makes sense to me though.. if the tire is scrap anyway, why not?

i will bring the mini-ex and a skidsteer when i come up. Strap the tire to the International and pull with mini-ex and/or skidsteer :D

Sounds good to me Shane, this project is to be continued. Should be some good action with all the Dale Jr. sponsored beverages. We should just make a party out of it.

That's why we had to use the mini-x, You can use the blade to hold the tire down while lifting. The only other thing we do is pour soap down between beadlock ring and wheel. If you put the blade on one sidewall, and the tire still wants to lift opposite side, you may have to park another vehicle on it. Keep me posted.

ryan- can you lever at least 1 spoon over the edge of the rim ?
Mike,

Yes, I have gotten the tire to clear the bead with two spoons and about five inches would be ready to come out. When we would try to get the other spoon on the rim to start walking it out the whole rim would spin and we would loose all of our grip.

I think tw89yj has best idea, I think I could have got it with the tractor if I had more time and a couple extra hands.

Maybe put the rim on a 5 gallon bucket and push down on the bead of the tire with the loader, let gravity help with that heavy assed tire...

When you get the 2 spoons in there, hold what you got, and use the screwdrivers like the other dude was saying. An inch at a time, that's what I do. Use a heavy duty craftsman driver, drink more beer, and try to cuss more, that should do it...

Still working on them - I will wait until I have a little more help - I will probably sell them and go with some 46's or 42's depending on what I find.

ya keep doing the leverin part and not trying to slide/spin like a tire machine... Like aaron871 said, use the spoon to pull it over then shove a screwdriver in it and keep levering it and inserting stuff as you work it around from your starting point....

Hope you never have to do a trail fix :)

your not the only one Mike - maybe I will just go with something else in a 20inch diameter unless I want to tote the tractor with me everywhere. Damn tires
