Never been before. I would like to go this spring/summer. I have a Wrangler and my son has a Cherokee. My question is regarding the camping. Do we have to camp at a campsite or just wheel till we are tired and stop for the night?

Also, is there a good site that indicates how difficult the trails are? My Jeep has a 4" lift but my sons Cherokee is stock. Not really into rock crawling but I do like riding trails.

Thanks,

greg

You don't have to camp or can stay somewhere else.

The trails are all pretty mild.

Make sure your A/C is working. The dust is so thick on the long gravel roads between the trails you have have to wear a dust mask or roll up the windows.

Thanks. Let me rephrase the camping question :~> We do want to camp while we are there. Do we need to make reservations at one of the campgrounds or can we just find a nice spot and set up camp?

Thanks again,

greg

There are various places on the trail you can camp for free that have been used previuosly. Once you drive around a while you will see them. If you stop at the Outpost or County Market to get your pass, they will have map and they have the trial difficulty listed. That said, they are all drivable in a stock rig with a little experience.

I would recommend you stay away from Daniel trail. It is do-able with a stock vehicle, but I would stick to the other trails.

Pirimitve camping along the trials is OK. Find a nice spot, and bed down for the night.

X2 Daniel is pretty steep in a few spots.

I havent been in a vehicle just with 4 wheeler. Make sure you use a spot that is allready cleared to camp on. The camp grounds are very nice and have showers. Thats the thickest dust up there you will ever see.

x3 on the dust. i'm still finding it the rover and that was 2 years ago!

yeah...the dust is pretty bad....there are alot of pictures around the board if you want to see what its like...if i was you i would go for wolf den...or slab pile...they are pretty fun

Daniel can be done with a stock rig, with proper spotting and enough clearance. But with the ledge there it isn't a guarantee, and its not a trail to do alone on your first time out. If the ledge had a bypass Daniel would be no problem.

Ok, we've covered stock rigs on Daniel and the dust. No one's mentioned the rain. If it rains, that red mud is slicker than teflon, be prepared to slide around. IMHO, its more fun when wet, just a lot more messy.

Camping

There are plenty of primitive camping spots in Uwharrie, The rule is don't camp where it states NO CAMPING. Here is a map.

So I am guessing that means you, Ed, and others won't be making the big April trip the weekend after (22nd-26th) that JoeD and everyone else is going on. Hope you guys have fun.

(And about maps)
That is a good starter map, I think that is one of the original ones. Here is the updated (but still old) version of that map:

And here is a link to the "official map" that is handed out with trail passes:

I should really turn this into a saved word document, but I found what I posted in another similar thread (slightly edited to fit the new year):

This may be a little bit long, but its worth a full read if your going on your first Uwharrie run.
Stop by one of the local spots to get your self/group prepped. There are multiple options including the Mountain Market (JeepURE aka Corey is our liaison for the Mt. Market) but in the past I have ended up going to the Eldorado Outpost:

Eldorado Outpost
4021 Nc Highway 109 N
Troy, NC 27371

The Market is closer if your coming from the south, but the outpost is an easy location also to use as a meet up point etc. There are somethings to do while you are there. First off get your trail pass for $5 ($5 a day, $30 a year). They should have a free forest service map to give you with it, but in case they are out have $2 handy to pick up their own in house map. They both will get you to and from the trails.

Air down while you are at the Outpost. It will help greatly with the ride on the rough forest roads. Its not a must but it makes your trip much smoother. Also make sure to get/bring a couple dollars in quarters for airing up after wards if you don't have free air options (the Outpost can have free air).

While you are there of course make sure to get any last minute supplies etc etc. Also keep in mind the "entrance" on the northern side of 109 (making a left out of the outpost) has more paved roads than the southern side.

The only trail I would say to stay away from on your first run out (unless you wheeling with a group of well equipped rigs) is Daniel. The rest of the trails mostly have bypasses for the harder stuff and if they don't. BUT this is talking when Uwharrie is dry, when it is wet (like it is in the winter and spring usually) even the easy trails can become difficult. When you take this into consideration you might want to add Dutch John onto the list of trails to stay off of because of its steep hill climb. You might be able to make it up it, but if its nice and muddy it may be impassible to some rigs.

Depending on how long you are planning on being out there usually the Wolf Den -> Falls Dam -> Dickey Bell run is good starter. Pending on driver skill, how well the rigs in your group are equipped, number of rigs in the group, how often you stop for pictures etc, it could take a good part of your trip. If you have time left over you can always go on Rocky Mnt Loop to watch people play on Kodak Rock (and play on it yourself if you want).

If your really feeling cautious you can to reverse the order and do Dickey Bell -> Falls Dam -> Wolf Den. That way you will be going down the moderate obstacles (stream crossing with "little hill climb" and 3 path hill climb) on Dickey Bell and will only have to worry about going up the one mini ledge on Falls Dam. Either way you will be going up one trail and down the other. If you want to run Falls Dam going down enter from Wolfs Den at the northern side, or at the road on the southern side (right across from Dickey Bell) to go up it. For Dickey bell its the opposite, if you want to run up it start on the southern side across from Falls Dam or to run it down start on the northern side near Rocky Mnt Loop.

April is always quite busy with people going for first runs of the year. One of the big group trips (one I am going on) is April 22nd-26th. If your out that weekend don't be a stranger.

Remind me about that, I would like to join. I too have never been... But dont know if I can wait that long!

Most places you should be able to turn around.

Keep in mind there are a lot of big trips during April/May. There is the NCKrawlers the weekend of the 18th, the Isuzuwharrie trip (one I am attending) the weekend of the 22nd (22nd-wed through 26th-sun), and the Zuwharrie in early May. Even if you don't go with a planned group you can usually just post up here saying your going such and such weekend and you will find a few people to tag along with.
