What do you do when you have a business trip in Arizona that requires you to be out west over a weekend, with nothing planned for the weekend? You drive 7 ½ hours north to Moab and hit the trails! I was lucky enough to be traveling with my best friend since 7'th grade (@4x4boys ) who is also my boss. When we found out we had to be in AZ before and after a weekend, we started hatching a plan to scratch off a bucket list trip.

We drove from Phoenix to Moab on Thursday (8/9) afternoon/evening and got into Moab by 1 AM on Friday morning. After a few hours of sleep we went to Twisted Jeeps and picked up the rental (Thanks @k5-1402 for the reference!) then we hit Fins & Things. This was our first time in Moab so we figured this was a good one to start on. Wow! Driving on that slick rock was like nothing we’ve ever experienced, and the views were incredible. It was a fun intro to Moab. After we completed Fins, we went to Moab Brewery to have a few celebratory beers and something to eat since it was mid-afternoon.

Saturday morning we had breakfast at Moab Diner to start our day. We planned to hit some of the easier trails to take in the views of the Colorado River and the mountains/buttes. We ran Hurrah Pass, then over to Jackson Hole, then on to Chicken Corners. The scenery was absolutely breathtaking! While we were on Jackson Hole we ran into a herd of rams. They didn’t spook and were content to eat some grass and keep an eye on us. They slowly moved off a bit and we kept moving down the trail. We got a little off track coming back from Chicken Corners, but we fired up GPX viewer and got back on the right trail. It was a long day but it was so worth it.

Sunday, we rode Hells Revenge. Hells Gate, Escalator and the Hot Tubs were off limits with the rental. We saw one built TJ and a couple of Textron SxS hit Hell’s Gate and the hot tubs. We didn’t see anyone attempt Escalator. Hells was a lot of fun! Like an amped up Fins.

We dropped off the rental mid-afternoon on Sunday and hit the brewery again for a couple of pops and some food. We bought the required souvenirs and then bid farewell to Moab as we pointed the rental car south to Arizona to finish off some business meetings on Monday. It was a short trip but was one I will never forget. Already thinking of another trip out, perhaps tying a Moab trip in with a trip to the Sedona Red Rock trails. Pics to follow!

That's AWESOME!!

I want to go back...this time taking the wife

When I go back I'll fly/rent, but I'm referencing that new Kia commercial. "If them COE-re-ans can climb hells gate in a damn minivan, why can't I in a JEEP?!?!"

Think it'll work?

LOL! It's worth a shot my man. Flying in and renting was cool, and very convenient, but you got to say, "I ran Moab in my Jeep.":beer::beer: for doing that!

That's how I plan to go next time! I think I almost have Sara talked into it.

@tlucier Glad you got to go! I hope the twisted Jeep worked as well for you as it did for me!

It was flawless - well, almost flawless. Nothing that stopped us from doing what we wanted. We rented a 2016 or 2017 Rubicon with their standard 3.5" Rancho lift lit and 37" Geolandar X-MTs. It was awesome! They even let us borrow a pretty good size cooler since we didn't have one. By the end of the 3 day weekend the steering wheel was way off center and the stability control light was on no matter what you did. When we brought it back they said, "Yea, we're not worried about that." LOL! Thanks again for the recommendation. Those guys were great!

Looks like the right choices were made that weekend. I was up in NY working for two weeks and had a couple weekends to kill. The wife flew up on her spring break and we drove to Niagra and then on to Boston. I'm glad we did it because otherwise I wouldn't have. I'd still be wondering what Niagra Falls looks like in person. Oh and on another note, the Sam Adams tour sucked balls except for the 10 am buzz

It was my first time and it won’t be my last. It’s absolutely beautiful out there.
Honestly I never had ANY desire to go out west my whole life. Just didn't interest me. Even after being in the club for a year and listening to Jason and Josh drone on for months about "Moab"....ehh..still no interest. Then when they presented an opportunity where I didn't have to plan, or think, or do ANYTHING other than drive my fat, white, happy ass out there...I thought, meh...got nothing BETTER to do. So I committed. Still, it wasn't any more exciting than any other trip (to me)
I think it was the 3rd day of driving...first thing in the morning. we had just left 40 and made a left turn onto, what looked like, the set of where they filmed the desert scenes of Moonraker, that made me sit up and take notice.
I could see the Colorado mountains in the distance. But you could see FOREVER. Even in those God forsaken corn fields of Indiana and Illinois on hwy 64 where there's NOTHING for 800 miles....but corn, did not hold a candle to it.

I'd never experienced that. We drove all day and those mountains never got ANY closer. But the landscape kept changing

Then on day 4 we arrived and the last 30 miles blew my friggin mind. I was hooked and I'd never set tire 1 on slick rock.

Once we DID hit the trails I questioned why I had wasted so much of my life NOT finding a way there in a JEEP before that moment. I couldn't live there, but damned if I couldn't vacation for 2 weeks there every year for the rest of my life

We’re definitely up for going again too. The wife wants to plan something for next year I think she enjoyed it more than me!

I spent a little bit of time in Colorado Springs for work but never had a lot of time to explore. About 10 years or so ago, during a visit to my in-laws in Arizona, my father in law took me up into the mountains in his YJ exploring old mining trails. After that trip I needed a Jeep.

Keep in mind, we didn't see any scenery in UT on our drive from AZ due to the time we were driving. Once we hit Cameron, AZ (a little over 2 hours from the UT line and almost 4 1/2 hours from Moab) it started to get dark. We rolled into Moab around 12:30 AM and didn't see any of the scenery until we woke up on Friday morning. You want to talk about sitting up and taking notice? Holy crap! Never saw landscape like we saw on this trip. We stayed at a Best Western that first night. This was my first view of Moab, UT while sitting on the hotel second floor patio, having breakfast and enjoying a cup of coffee...

Loving the thread. Waiting on more pics.
Moab is a bucket list for me. Along with Colorado.
I plan to take my daughter when she’s about 11 or 12 and have this awesome memorable father/daughter trip going across the country.
