My 11 year old heater started leaking. Whirpool with a 12 year warranty. So after determining that it Was the tank, I stared on line shopping. Really just comparing Lowe's, to Home Depot. HD appeared lower priced & carry Rheem, but the one I wanted had to be ordered. This morning I go to my local Lowe's, to see if I can get a price match/discount, or what. They used to carry Whirpool, now it's A O Smith. After working with the rep, & getting offered $100 off, he suggested I call Whirpool on my warranty. Get a RA # & whatever they may give. Well, I've Never seen warranty's that were worth much, & I even doubted a prorated amount on a 11 year old heater! But I went back home to get my info & call. The guy at American Water Heaters, of Johnson City, Tenn., couldn't have been nicer! After giving the info [model/serial/date install] he Pre-registered my 11 year old unit. Something I hadn't done. Then he gave me a RA #, plus e-mailed it & info to me, authorizing Lowe's to give me a FREE Replacement! I'm Blown away! The replacement [A O Smith] is a $600 unit! He said, hey your old heater Failed it's Warranty! So I've spent most of the day doing the swap. I just read through the New warranty, & it's basically says the same, "If the tank leaks while in warranty, you get full replacement". If a Part fails, they replace the part.
I feel Like I won the Lottery! Maybe I'll start registering my stuff & rearing the Warranty's.

That's amazing!

I started reading this, and just KNEW the warranty wouldn't be honored, and if it was would be prerated to $20 or something. Very surprised. Great surprise

Go buy a couple lottery tickets too!

I have a Whirlpool water heater with a lifetime warranty. I used it when the electronic brain malfunctioned. Same thing, super nice and overnighted the part as it just had a couple screws and one plug. It's about 10 years old now, no issues.

I'm not sure if American makes water heaters & just places a badge on them, or if they actually switched brands. They used to supply Whirlpool, & that's what Lowe's sold. But now they supply A O Smith, & that's what Lowe's is selling. Great it's American made, & their customer ser./tech/warranty phone, is American! :usa:

Ha! Nothing beats American, after all. ;)

Sometimes warranties just work. I got a Keurig coffee maker as a gift a little over a year and a half ago. It recently died (I suspect it was my fault, I didn't descale like I was supposed to). Turns out, we had a 2 year extended warranty on it through some third party from JCPenny. I got full purchase price back for it. Considering the same model now costs $50 dollars LESS, I came out ahead somehow.
