Water in floorboard

99 TJ hardtop that a coworker bought a few days ago. When it rained a couple days ago he noticed water in the passenger floorboard. He checked the cowl drain and says it is clear. He washed it yesterday and had water in the floorboard again. Any ideas?

i would check behind dash for leaks from windshield seal (where it meets the body). and from where brake booster and steering shaft seals are. Also the heater core (two hoses) seal on the firewall. the cowl phelnum box is also one but you said that was checked. the ecu harness bulkhead and the fuse block firewall areas are also leak points.

Anyways. i think you get the jist. anywhere there is a hole in the firewall relying on rubber to seal, etc.

It’s not a mail jeep. Leaking into the passenger floor board or right hand floor board. Thanks I’ll pass it along.

You mean there's water right TJ's out there? I thought that it was engineered to leak from the factory.

On a side note I'd check door seals and the top. That's where mine leaks at.

I mean are we talking like an inch or two deep or a small puddle, like a couple spoon fulls?

pull the floor plugs and cut a small drain hole in the carpet. It's gonna leak.Don't care what ya do.

Mine doesn’t leak at all with the hard top or soft top. He says it’s an inch or more both times. Already to him about drain plugs and cutting holes in carpet. I’m going to get it over to my shop and check it out with a water hose.

My old 99 TJ leaked on rainy days. The cowl intake (for the HVAC) will get clogged with old leaves and such. When this happens the water cant drain out and it winds up in the floor board.

Tons of info for this. May not be his issue, but it's free and probably still needs to be done.

With that much. I’d pick the cowl drain port, the windshield seal, or door seal. In that order.

I’m not as knowledge savvy as most on here but that’s my exp after several diff exp

@shawn has removed enough in the dashboard area and may have some input

I doubt it's coming through the dash. Assuming the cowl is draining properly, the fresh air intake is high on the passenger side. It has a shroud over it, but it's also covered by the cowl. Easy enough to dump some water into the cowl vent and see if it's ponding, or pop the vent loose from under the hood and clean it out.

The next most likely culprit is the passenger door. If hard doors and soft top, the doors aren't sealing tight to the surrounds, or there's a tear in the top near the edge. Half doors are a real pain in the ass to seal, especially aftermarket ones. The upper fabric can shift around, causing the seals to roll away from the surrounds. Hard tops have a drip rail above the doors, so they're less likely to leak this way.

If it were the heater core, there would be an antifreeze smell, and the Jeep would overheat quickly if it were dumping that much coolant in the floorboard on a regular basis. The seals under the hood at the fan and heater hoses could leak, but there's the hood and the hood seal as well, so tough to get much water in that way. Same for the windshield seal. If parked nose down and the rubber windshield gasket was in bad shape and there was a gap at the top of the windshield in the sealant that holds the glass in place, it might leak as much as the door seal... But that's a lot of ifs.

Door seal seems most likely.

Hardtop with full doors. Anyone recognize this jeep? I don’t know where he bought it but it has 250k miles or so.

Hmm... That throws a wrench in my ideas.

What about all that light bar bullshit? Did somebody drill a hole where they shouldn't, or run the wire in through the door seal?

Try This! Get a Small person that can lay upside down in the passenger seat. Might even give that person a flash light. Turn on the hose & say, LOOK!

Genius!! Why are we guessing when one could simply be watching

CJs are prone to leak at the seal between the windshield and tub, not sure how true that is two generations later but it might be worth a look.

Ever notice how the CJ's leak, will drip on your clutch foot, &/ or right on top of the Factory Radio slot? My Third Radio, is a Marine type, wrapped in a plastic bag. As for my wet foot, I just move it around to a no drip area!

Don’t have anyone I can think of that’s small enough and smart enough for this project.

Just how big a boy are ya?

@obullfish big enough that my wife has been nagging me for a while, but small enough to take a look under the dash!:D
