Well, after only 3 weeks here, I got a no-so-nice "Welcome to Raleigh" this morning when I went to get in my car to go to work, and found my wife's car had a window smashed out and GPS stolen out of it.

The officer who responded said that there was a bunch of them, all around Shelley Lake, and all they were taking were GPSs.

Just a friendly reminder, take your GPS inside, or at least remove it from sight.

not only remove it from sight, but clean the sucker inprint...

sorry to hear.. but they are being stolen left and right. at least you are not in durham... they tend to steal that plus the 4 cents in the door, and the rest of my water, a few old clothes in the back and a bunch of cd's..which reminds me... if you ever have a thief in your car disguard all liquids that were in the car at the time (i.e half drunk water sitting in the holder)

oh, and one more thing... we leave our doors UNLOCKED when they are behind closed in fences... If not they just smash every window we have. It took about 5 replaced windows is 6 months to learn this.

this thief had no interest in anything other than the GPS.
there was a radio, couple pair of designer sunglasses, a bunch of CDs and other misc stuff in the car, all of which are worth more than the 3 year old GPS from a manufacturer that doesn't offer map updates (damn thing didn't even have the 540 on it)

they also had no interest in the much newer GPS in MY car, which has an obvious alarm system

I really don't much care about the stolen GPS, it's the smashed window that really pisses me off.

i've seen bunches and bunches of smashed out windows in the area around shelley lake ( i drive through there every morning and afternoon) and it seems like they arent trying too hard to fix the problem

that sucks
yeah durham is terrible for theft, luckily it aint happened here yet to me, knock on wood.

My Jeep has been raided at least 4 times... They raid it when I have doors and windows, when I only have doors, and when I have no doors (I walked outside, jumped in and relized I lost another radio, then I relized I had no doors.... I did not know if they were stolen... or I left them at home)

My wife had her window smashed for her radio many years back..

Cops said same thing.. they thieves smashed tons of windows that same night and got bunches of stuff.

Thieves just plan suck..

I do always find it funny how people say well in my neighborhood we do not have crime.. all that means is that crime has not found you yet...

kinda like riding a motorcycle.. there are those that have crashed and everyone else that will eventually :) (if they actually ride there bike and not just polish it )

dont worry, its not just shelly lake it happens at, its basiclly any apartment community where a lot of cars are parked in a small area. i lived in goveners point over behind lake lynn and i never ad any problems, but i knew people who did. after the first time i got broken into i learned to take everything in with me wherever i went. leave your soft top doors unlocked because whatever they steal cant be worth as much as replacing your top.

I was listening to talk radio WBT about a week ago and Larson was talking to the TV news anchor for the 10pm news for WBTV and she had done a report the night before about removing your GPS from your car. Well, that same night, her own husband did not remove his, and his got stolen! It's like the crooks just wanted to make a point or something!!
