I remember last year that there were only 2-3 commercials that I thought were actually funny and maybe 2-3 more that I thought were decent. This year, I'm had difficulty finding even one commercial that was decent. That said, I've read a couple articles that the NFL audience/tv revenue is trending downward due to a combination of game day saturation (games Thursday-Monday) and live streaming, and as a result, advertising is also going down. A couple other articles were saying that commercial premiums were at an all time high a few years ago, and whatever the standard amount of time for a super bowl commercial is, the cost for that slot is down about 30%. Perhaps NFL popularity peaked and we'll see the fanaticism start to normalize.
Personally I think a lot of it has to do w/ the evolution of the internet, and people becoming desensitize to quick wit/funny shit.

Nowadays at any moment you can have a really good video hit a million people lickity split just by picking up on the viral thing. People just get used to that and see "great commercials" all te htime. No need to wait until the Superbowl.
Then think about it from the company's standpoint... I have a great commercial idea. I could either release it right now for virtually $0, and put my effort into placing it just right within Facebook, Instagram, whatever... or spend $million and be buried among 100 other ads and only on this 1 day. The first is a much better fiscal bet.

Compound that with the onset of DVR. Just spent millions for millions of people to fast forward through your commercial. I have noticed a handful of shows start incorporating commercials/sponsors into the last 10-15 seconds of a segment. Like on Lethal Weapon with the Window's tablet..."You can see the ballistics results right here on my Windows tablet, where you can blah blah blah...sees how many times they fit 'Windows tablet' in before the actual commercials start".

that's nothing new, product placement has been a thing forever

I know...I've seen the vehicle brands being used, the drinks being consumed, etc etc...but never a blatant and legitimate commercial worked in to the script of a TV show.
this always reminds me of the scene in The Truman Show, where they explain that since it streams 24/7, the only way to get advertising $$ was to literally stitch commercials into his interaction w/ people.
