The way it usually works around here is, my wife adds a bunch of stuff to the cart she's either considering or something small that she doesn't want to order by itself. I go to order something and have 10 random items in the cart. I yell, Hey honey, do you want the blah blah blah in the cart? If she says maybe, or I'm thinking about it, or whatever, I hit save for later on everything...

Or if it's something I don't really need, I'll do save for later and watch price change notifications.
 
You can also just buy 1 item directly from its page without messing with anything else in the cart. Most of the time that's what I do.
