What do you consider "good money?"

^^^ that hour drive is "wind down" time. I actually like my hour commute. I've found that when work was 15 minutes down the road I constantly had work on my mind thinking about the day and what to do the next day all while at home for the evening. No long commute in the morning to prepare for the day and get organized.

Call me strange I guess.

I ran the numbers several years ago, and working in Raleigh vs RTP was worth $10k/yr in actual dollars. That's a 15-20 minute commute vs a 45-60 minute commute.

"Good Money" really depends on who you are. A debt free person making 35-40K/yr is prob more well off than a college grad in debt with student loans over their head making 50-60K/yr. It's all a matter of perspective and life-style/situations. But every time this topic comes up it seems to be the consensus you'll never make enough, will always want more.

Move to the Asheville area. Bet you’ll change your mind about cost of living then.

asheville has become stupid expensive to live, with no high paying jobs to speak of. idk how it works for all the hipsters.

Y'all beat me to it!!! Asheville is stupid expensive. I mean really stupid.

I can't wait to leave...

2 jobs. Both in the wait-staff field. Surviving on tips in a shithole apartment in walking distance from said jobs (speculation....but that's how the Asheville hipsters survive in downtown winston)

asheville is getting so expensive that its driving up the price of land and houses in haywood county.

to go to a restraunt in downtown for 2 people you better be ready to spend a 100 dollars.

and at the same time their really isnt a ton of work for skilled labors, its all mostly tourism driven.

what is crazy is my best friend is an architect in asheville, well him and his wife. they lived near down town for 6 months then realized it was costing them to much to live there, now they commute from haywood county everyday and save money

Hmm. So I'm selling myself short by working an hour away?

Even if I get $.54/mile both ways and twice on Sunday? :D

I forgot to add that I have good health insurance, vacation, sick time, comp time, federal holidays off, and get paid to travel...I'm actually on a plane right now. I also pick up my step 3 in December and that will bump me up to 58,500 a year.

There's a "cost" for everything. (at my age) I wouldn't work an hour away from home for $200k a year

In my 20's? I'd drive 3hrs one way for that, but the older I get the more valuable my personal time becomes

if you dont have a social life, the only expensive thing to contend with in Asheville is the cost of rent. We've almost nailed down where we want to setup shop. Another year at most in this overcrowded town and will be able to quit throwing money away in rent

I gladly gave up a job making making more than double the money I make now so I could be home every night and have a family and social life. For many years I was only home 30-45 days a year which sucked majorly.

I make decent money right now, as does my wife. I work with good people and I look forward to doing my job. I have been blessed enough to say that I truly enjoy my job. Sure, I don't make a killing, and I have to deal with architects and engineers that cant agree with each other, and I could probably make more elsewhere. I put a great value on enjoying what I do and the people I work with. We have good benefits and I have room to grow both in my trade and monetarily. The only downside is that its an hour drive one way, but the pros outweigh the cons. Its a give and take. We will be better off once my student loans are paid off.

I learned a few years ago (2011) when I got canned from my last real 'job' that I would rather work for myself. I liked what I did at that job but didn't really like the way the boss ran things as I valued my family over my job and I wasn't afraid to let him know that. He didn't value MY family, or his own family over the business and working for someone like that is tough. It was nice having a regular paycheck, but I enjoy what I do now and it gives me way more time to do what I want, I just have to make sure I sell something every once in awhile to keep $$$ coming in.

On our taxes around 75K.BUT I don't have any benefits such as ins, retirement, ect.I figure Ill retire when they put me in the ground if my health last that long. One the benefits I do have is that if I find something on the net I want to buy that's two states away I can load up and go or if we wanna go to the beach for a few days we're gone.House is paid off, vehicles are paid for also, and no credit card debt.Like @Croatan_Kid said we save to get what we want.We haven't borrowed any money since 05 or so and I'm willing to bet our credit has suffered for it.I like nice things as much as the next guy but I'm not gonna be a slave to a payment.Ive worked w those people before and they're not living, they're existing.
