There are 10 of these trees in my front yard and I want them gone. They constantly drop branches and crap all over. Are they worth anything to burn (like firewood) if not I’ll drag them out back and burn them.

Look like some variety of cherry trees. Maybe you should look into pruning them or getting them healthy so they don't drop branches.
At least I would try before cutting them.

All I know is there are people with big yards and no trees...wishing they had trees.
I want trees and if these go away I will plant something else that will provide shade.

I will see if I can find someone to tell me if that’s a thing. If these just continue to do it they are goners!!

Maybe river birch. The bark pictured looks like cherry but the leaf is notched more like a birch. If the bark flakes off in thin paper like sheets it's a birch.

It’s not like birch bark. Growing up in Northern Michigan we had paper Birch and this is nothing like that kind of bark. This is thick and coarse.

Leaf looks a lot like the birch family (birch, alder, hawthorn, etc)....But the bark isn't very birch like...definitely not a river or paper. Any evidence of nuts, fruits, seeds, cones, etc?

Maybe, maybe, could be a sweet birch. Bark is closer, leaf maybe not so much.

They had little caterpillar looking seed things. They were fuzzy then that blew off and the little seeds looked about the size of course ground pepper.

I had no idea to start with but after googling river birch I don’t see the resemblance. There is no white on ours. Even river birch, although a rougher texture bark, still has white in it like its relative trees.

Well I may reach out to the local Ag Extension and see if I can figure out more detail. They were here when we bought the house and I appreciate the shade they give but if you look at them wrong the drop 1” and smaller limbs and twinges all over the damn place. For the most part I just mow over them but it gets old having to clean the yard before you mow every time!

I have a couple River Birch around here that have similar bark at the bottom, and the papery bark higher up. At least that's how I remember it. Right now they just look black.

I'm guessing with black birch/ river birch somehow transplanted to a mid zeric site.

The bark won't ash bleach absent high moisture condent. There is also likely some natural hybridity at play.

I would guess something related to birch based on the leaves, but the bark looks nothing like any birch I have seen.

First off, it looks like they were planted. For their size I didn't think River Birch because in NC they have to get mature to show that bark but once I looked closer it seems that they may be. RB's here have to get pretty old to have that bark. For now I'll go with RB but a cousin of RB is very possible.

I wasn’t here for when it popped leaves but my wife said it didn’t flower at all. There are no signs of any type of fruit/berry/ etc.
