what winch

I'm in the market for another 8274. I paid $400 for the last one, and it came with the warn tj mounting bracket. It's 35 years old, and I can buy whatever parts I need from Amazon prime.

Yea, but I wouldn't want to buy one from parts to make it. o_O

Consider fabbing a protective metal shield over the upper cast aluminum housing. It cost $255 to replace it (not including tax and shipping) cause it includes gears. It sticks up like a sore thumb. Popped mine with a limb and busted it so I bought another winch just for this part and sold the rest and be dang if I didn't crack it too. Nice looking new housing though considering the old ones get dull. Guess I'll eventually break down for a new one one day cause they don't go for $400 any more unless you are glue'd to craigslist with all the crazy misspellings of the word winch (wench, rench, wince).

How long ago was it you found that one?

Yeah the OTHERS part sounds like the challenge here. Seems like the second a 8274 slips up on craigslist all you bastards will have some spambot programmed to send cash from your paypal off your iPhone directly to the owner with claims of dibs :flipoff2:

On a related note....those of you WITH a decent winch (8274, ZEON, Unobtanium ZX20...etc) ....ever worry about it getting jacked if you're out somewhere mall crawling and away from your rig for a few hours? (i.e. forced to actually GO to the mall/other institution of hell while out with your sig other) or overnight outside of the security of your own fortress? Or hell, those of you in Raleigh, AT home? :D

I try to park across 3 handicapper spots right up next to the walmart front door like all those pics in the douche parking thread and the rest of my rig looks like you need a tetanus shot to get near it so keeps the riff raff away I guess.

Having a winch stolen is just one reason I like to run a disconnect on the positive battery cable to the winch. I promise a thief won't take time to disconnect the battery or tape up the hot wire. No one wants an electrical fire. I use a continuous duty solenoid napa part number st402. It looks like and wires up like a Ford starter solenoid but is rated for continuous duty. It was used to isolate the dual batteries on 1991 ish f350s. As a bonus if the winch solenoids stick and the winch keeps running you can kill power with this using a toggle switch on the dash.

My homemade bumper makes it slightly aggravating to get to the bolts so I'm not too worried about it getting stolen.

I'm running a mile marker 12000 on my f150 and dads bronco. It's slow but it works. The stock sealed contactor box died on mine almost immediately. Dads quit after he pressure washed it. Mile marker sent a new ones with no problems but I replaced them with the older warn style solenoids and hardwired it to a in cab remote. I figured if the old setup died I could replace them with Ford starter solenoids and finish a wheeling trip rather than have no winch until mile marker could mail out another.

I bought it off here a couple years ago. There was one posted about two weeks ago that I tried to buy, but didn't get to in time. It was identical to the other one (only a thousand or so apart on the serial number), so that would have been nice to have.

There's one on CL right now for $500 (been there a while), but it's in a bit crappier condition than what I want for the price.

I bought the bottom seal kit, power leads, motor jumper wires, electrical connector boots, and a couple of other things from Amazon. Contactor came from Summit, rope came from CT.

I did a searchtempest for 8274 and then with warn and weaded through everything "wanted and for sale" and came up nothing within 250 miles. Mind posting the ad? Maybe one of us may grab it. I would consider just for the top cover if someone else wants some parts.

It was on Raleigh cl. You missed out. I posted that it was on there, and somebody went and bought it. :flipoff2:

I take it you're the one with the perpetual wanted ad in Durham?

You mean perpetual for sale ad??? Dude, I'm moving to TN (250 miles away) next year and got more shit than anybody I know or ever met...:shaking: So much so, I'm willing for "walk through-s" for any Ford heads. Amazing what you accumulate in 20 years.

As for spending on anything but bills, I haven't even bought beer in 3 weeks.

Unfortunately I'm always interested in winches since I use them so much. This thread kinda just got me wound up a tad. I really should just sell my 8274 with cracked top...

At $2.02 for diesel posted this morning in K-town/ being $55-$60 a round trip of loaded 20' goose and 8' bed, I'll make 10 extra trips before I give anything away. Wife thinks I'm crazy but there's no way I'll sell for 25 cent a hundred pound. Especially with 8.5 acres waiting on me.

Good ole 2 term presidential election years... Gotta love em.:burnout:

So I am going to chime back in on this. I have a Rugged Ridge 8k winch on my TJ. I bought it used for less than 200, and a couple people have said the line speed was the same as their warn. I figure for that cheap, it is replaceable when it conks out. I used my 12k Smitty Built winch last weekend on my truck for the first time, and it was plenty powerful, but line speed was slow.

So...I'm confused.....is that a YES to my $101 offer? :D
