What's your name 2020- The Harlan that almost didn't happen.

Yep and the main entrance is so sketchy you have to take the bypass.
Wow. I knew it would go eventually. When you say sketch you mean stupid off camber? What about the two rocks with the trench between them? I assume people will start trying that again. I watched a guy on a buggy xj sort of do it....

Just a little teaser (i.e., just the tip) since I gotta day-job and shit...

Unfortunately, I've been SWAMPED at work since our last Kairos trip. I actually had to cancel the trip I had planned to Harlan with CORE a couple weeks ago bc of work. I thought I was going to miss this one as well but I got the "maybe..." from the boss on Wednesday around 5:30pm. So, I figured I'd load my shiote and be ready to haul ass in case I could make it work. Fortunately for me, I've traveled enough for work to have Platinum status with Marriott and they let me park for a few hours since I damn sure wasn't fitting in the parking deck in downtown W-S.

About 3:30pm on Thursday I got the "go ahead, but keep your phone and laptop close in case anything blows up..." so I hop in the truck and high-tailed it up 52. About the time I hit Fancy Gap the bottom dropped out on me and it was about like that for the rest of the trip off and on.

First thing Friday morning (and I mean first thing...read above about how Phillip is a morning person and doesn't sleep well out of town)

Didn't get a lot of pics from Friday as we covered a lot of ground. Pretty sure White T(r)ail Crawl was the first trail we hit Friday morning. Phillip ended up bitchin out about halfway up and took the bypass around. I was next and walked it up nearly to the exit and then got hung up on my rear diff (I need bigger tars)!

The only other pictuers I got from the day were of @cufor98 coming up Crawford's Cry since we were pulling some line at the exit.

I don't think it was long after we decided to head back to the house for that Low Country Boil Alan cooked up. Once done we decided to go check to see if anybody had made it to the RV park behind the Dairy Hut where we stopped for a few to chat with @Granny and Robbie. From there we decided we'd go ride around and maybe "scratch" on a few things. As stated above, I rode shotty w/ @D2320M and @ncsutj rode with @cufor98.

Synopsis...

"Scratching" turned quickly into...
Why is Phillip leading this ride?
WHAT ARE WE DOING??!!
"This is a stupid idea..." was said more than once
Tire smoke
Rev limiter(s)
Freedom noises
Ate some mud
DALE YEA!!!
Fist bumps
Got back around 11-ish
Showers for all (separately)
Cold snacks / night caps
Bed after midnight for another round in the AM

I'm sure it's washed out quite a bit more but this was last August. It was dumb off camber last two times I went, imagine rain has not been kind to that spot.

Saturday morning Robbie rolled up to the PWB Inn around 9:30 and from there the plan was to head towards Mason Jar.

One of my favorite things about this hobby is the views you get to see. I've said it before, but if you don't just get back out in the woods there's part of this beautiful country that you'll just never see.

My other favorites are the fellowship with great people and the adrenaline rush. We got our fair share of both this trip!

upload_2020-8-10_11-46-50.png

It was also great to meet both Robbie and @Granny! We got to talking with these two Saturday night and hearing some stories about the "good ole days". I hope to God that one day I'll still be out in the woods living life like these two at their age (not to mention hitting the kind of trails they ran too!!!). As friggin' awesome as this trip was, this was damn sure one of my highlights!!

Mason Jar...

Entrance: most pulled line except Alan and Phillip. Casey takes the cake for most photo-worthy.

Stopped about halfway through to make sure Robbie's brake line was good and we could break for lunch. Found a nice, relatively flat spot in the shade to park it for about 20ish minutes before we proceeded on.

It was fairly uneventful for us the rest of the way out of Mason Jar. Afterwards, we went and checked out Lion's Den since I'd never seen it.

From there Alan, Casey, Derek and myself decided it was still somewhat early in the evening..................but late enough in the weekend to know that if we broke something it wasn't going to ruin our trip at this point. So we figured we'd check out a few more trails. Lower Profanity was a cake-walk for the three of us. Didn't stop nor spin a tire but fun little trail. Wish we would have just kept going and ran upper.

From there we went back to Fish Fossil. Got about halfway up where the little walkway bridge was and stopped for a few to kick it.

Since we were there the night before, we didn't notice the cool little waterfall behind the bridge.

upload_2020-8-10_12-40-12.png

Alan on said bridge...

upload_2020-8-10_12-40-45.png

We proceeded on for the top of Fish Fossil and, similar to the night before, we BEAT on it hard. Kinda went like this.

Alan went first...gave it a decent go but he was only hitting it w/ his purse. That's about the time I came over the radio with "gonna have to give it a lot more Dales than that". After that, lots of rev limiter and tire smoke but couldn't get it.

I went next...more rev limiter, belts squeaking, tires smoking, holding 6k RPMs with the radio in hand saying "SHE WANTS IT...." but ultimately got denied.

Derek went next...freedom noises, LOTS of tire smoke, got it hot enough to make it to the top.

I won't having that so I gave it another go. 1st attempt...made it out but not without some driver side rear damage and ripping a tail light out. But I f'n made it and that's all that matters!

upload_2020-8-10_12-47-26.png

upload_2020-8-10_12-47-45.png

Casey next...got him nearly to the top and hooked up line.

upload_2020-8-10_12-48-5.png

Alan pulled up the rear end and came right out.

Since we were right back at Little Jager...we thought we'd see if anybody had anything for it. That's a negative ghost rider...

I was about to hop on it and show the big boys how it's done when Adam sent the text that supper was ready so I figured I'd save the guys some embarrassment and we'd head back.

Saturday night feast with these ugly mugs!

All loaded up after supper. Great weekend, great friends, great memories!

Definitely going to need the backstory and buildup to this...

This is after getting it rolled back over....

I was walking up the trail to see what kind of bad decisions were being made when I looked up and saw them about to roll, the I hear @D2320M say "Oh we're done" as he rolls it 1.5 time down the trail. Good times and was not the easiest of recovery's either.

Definitely going to need the backstory and buildup to this...

Me and Derek are not allowed to hang out alone together after 5pm cause bad things happen (last time we rolled Alan's Jeep a couple times)
So we planned this out well ahead of time, I had @CasterTroy photoshop that pic, and we'd somehow get Alan away from his Jeep. @adamk was in on it and said "hey lets me and you ride to the store" and they took my Jeep since I was parked in front of him. I went so far as to walk over and explain the prank, and history to the neighbor and asked if I could park his Jeep over there to hide it from him when he returned. The we sent the pic above to our group text and said "This old dude bet us we couldn't get your Jeep across that river. We tried and failed, Phillip is SO sorry. He feels awful"

So Alan returned to me and Derek and his Jeep missing but knew us all to well. Me and Derek were hiding out back and he just rounded the corner all casual like "ya'll gotta do better than that to pull one over on me. Me and Derek were back there giggling like school girls laughing about what we thought was happening whenever he walked up and took the wind out of our sails.

Oh well. Next time I'll just really have to roll it again.

Friday night when we came out of Fish Fossil, me and @rcalexander105 decided to walk over and look at Little Jagger. We only had his phone light, and as we were walking over he was like “man what would you do if suddenly a big ol mountain lion or bear jumped out in front of us?” Without skipping a beat I said “I’d punch you in the stomach and run”

Hey, I think there’s some bodies in the basement.

well don’t open the door!

Gah it burns me I missed this one, WBweekend better make up for it. Plus @Joe J. rig will be done so he can give @cufor98 a run for his holeshot attempts.
To be fair, I was the first into mason jar so I had all the grippy stuff dry with no dirt spun up yet. And Crawford’s Cry; we’d already stacked a ton of rocks in all the right places. :driver:

Love how in Casey’s video of Alan on Crawford’s Cry we’re like “point it towards the bank and don’t let out” and Derek yells “yeah don’t pull out!” And Alan’s says “I never pull out” and I’m like “that’s why you got twins” :shaking:

I spit my coffee out watching that video. I forgot about that lol.

The amount/level of shit talking on this trip was top notch.
