What's your wheeling style?

i just saw where this thread originated from. the talking about to big for stock axles. again I do think it depends on your driving and some I think the materials must have been different in these danas. because I have seen some completely bust over nothing but I have 2 different d35s that have been more than abused running 33s. 1 has an arb and stock shafts the other a super 35 kit
 
Yeah I've beat on my stock axles pretty good with up to a 33, but I want to travel out to TN and KY and more places. So I'm keeping my XJ the way it is unless I find a deal on bolt in axles, and I'm gonna het something ready to get wild in. Shoot I wouldn't be scared to wheel a brand new jeep with 30 day tags, long as you do it sensibly.
 
Well right now my rig is on jackstands, so jackstand wheeling it is:flipoff2: I like it all pretty much except for mud, loved it for a little while but when you working on your rig and you keep getting hit with chunks of mud it gets old fast. The Tacoma has yet to hit a trail but that will change. To me wheeling is a good get away, ride trails during the day, come back to camp shoot some bs and hangout with friends and people who have broke shit near camp.
 
I like a challange when im wheeling but i also just like being out there. If i see it and it looks like something my jeep can do im going to go for it. I wouldent say im balls to the wall, floor it, but some times a little skinny pedal is nessasary. I've sheared a stock d30 shaft on 31's and that was just crawling along so you never really know when something will break.
 
This may sound weird, but I think I actually enjoyed wheeling better when my jeep was closer to stock than I do now that it is built. I'm considering downgrading.

i learned that a long time ago. it was an expensive lesson.
 
Hey some of you that prefer stock, care to explain why? Pros & cons? If I'm going to feel the same way in a few years I'm gonna go ahead and buy a nice stocker and build the XJ! Lol

IMO...it creates a better driver and better challenges...and it's cheaper. Kinda like getting drunk, the higher your tolerance, the more you have to drink to get drunk. When you guys with built rigs go to uwharrie, you're going over the same obstacles as the stock vehicles (for the most part)...how much fun is it breezing through the trail in 2wd, not being challenegd at all.
 
I wheel at the mall, my pants down past the crack of my ass. Lots of gold in my grill & my hat crooked. I say things like yo homie. The sound will vibrate your chest from 10 miles away & I hop speed bumps at 15 mph in a 10 mph zone.

Some call me crazy, I am not though. I am just bad azz....

I personally don't find Uwahrrie challenging at all. I just enjoy being out away from everything. It's one of my favorite places. I have long term plans to move to Colorado cause there are way more places for all kinds of wheeling.

I ride in the right lane and obey the speed limit.
Obstacles on the trail might harm me.
I only wheel at URE, so my 26" rims don't get scratched up.

I have been to uwharrie in my wifes grand cherokee with hp30-8.8 locked both ends 6" lift custom links running 35's and it just annoyed me with all the small rocks and water breaks. It doesn't have good bumpstops or highend shocks so it was bumpy and the stock steering wore me out.
I have also run it in my j-truggy and while their was no reason to have it in 4wd the aired down 42's with soft leaf springs were smooth over the bumps and the hydro assist steering didn't wear me out.
So I guess I'd rather be over built and comfortable than a challange driving a stocker.
 
I hate MUD! I avoid it like its someone with the flu LOL! If there is mud between the hardtop and the rocks or the rocks to the hardtop, well then I'll go through it.

Mud is more challenging/more fun, you can see rocks. There are always unseen/unkown factors w mud and muddy trails. Do I really need to lock the hubs? How slippery, how deep, how mutch further till it gets dry, Can I make it up/down that slippery slope? should I crawl or punch it? did someone w 44s wallow out this unasuming hole? can I straddle/tiptoe those logskidder ruts and not slide into them? does the mud stink like rotten eggs, will it sling like snot or throw chunks on the guy behind me? can I drive around the edge of the massive hole? will I slide into the deepest part of the hole like a submarine? will I slide into that tree, will I slide right off the mountain? why did'nt I roll up the window sooner? How the hell am I gonna turn around? etc. also hitting the muddy earth rarely bends/breaks stuff, hitting rocks w/o a reinforced rig is gonna ruin your day. The best wheeling is exploring new paths or the FIRST time you drive down a new trail IMO.
 
yeah thats why im now going to stock maybe 3"lift on 38s TSLs and Doubler, that way i still got clearance but low center gravity to still climb steep hills. i totally agree with the guy whose always like "go go do it" cause like you said, he aint payn for nothin when it brakes and yes, he's usually the first one to laugh too. I have told that to jeepsters before, mostly newbies on the trail, and have actually got in their trucks and drove through the stuff to get it going when they didn't have the knowledge but that was me just showing them what their cherokee could do. I actually love showing people what their cherokee can do when they have no idea or too scared.
