Where are the employees?

That seems to be exactly what is happening in this interview process. The first was with an HR person, then next was management level and the last one was two people that would be peers. Company sounds pretty good and the people that I would be working with are mostly former Hanes/Champion team members. I have researched each of the people I've interviewed with on social media (trying not to be a social-stalker) and I really felt like I hit it off well with the last round interview of two.

I will give a try to tailoring my resumes to the position. I also like the metrics approach with tangiable business outcomes. I don't think I have that enough in my resume. Thanks for the tips!
Take off any years of school. Only list last 10 years of jobs.

And yes, focus on the wins and people led and money saved.

What are all these 'other jobs' for people that were only skilled enough to flip burgers 2 years ago? Where did they go? They didn't go back now that the pay is significantly better?

It is strange.
Target working in the deli? I’m sure other jobs became available that were of the same skill set, or at least all you had to do was know how to spell your name and deal with general public, they started paying the $15hr well before Burger King did, so that’s where they ended up, others sat at home mooching off Uncle Sam and now likely just sitting at home being dead beats

A lot of homes are being bought with cash by investors or reits. Cash buyers driving up the price and turning them into rentals. Not all. But more is happening now then before
This is pretty much what happened with my house just in November….it was purchased by some hedge fund individual from Florida or something. My house was a 3 bed/2 full bath house 1100sq ft that sold for at least 1.5x its actual value due to this. I am 1000% certain it’s a rental right now

We're having equally difficult times finding recruits here at the FD. In our most recent hiring process, we had 143 applicants. Total. That's before the HR application screening for automatic disqualifiers. When I was hired, 400 applicants took the written exam. Part of our drop in applicants can be directly tied to our EMS system requiring a Covid vaccine. The other part is our abysmal pay rate, which city council is supposed to be addressing since we're hemorrhaging employees that we literally just spent 6 months training. Maybe one day it will improve, but I feel the workforce has been negatively impacted for the next few years.

My agency is probably 100 people down. And it will take over a year (probably 2) to get those numbers back

I read threads lke this and think about what it's going to be like trying to get any decent interns this summer, when stipend rates are set by the gov based on norms 2 years ago. You can make more flipping boogers at Wendy's than in a laboratory. But at least I've still got the edge on a better resume line and cool factor.

Well yeah then OPM aparently just announced new $15 floor for civilian workers... Great, but oh wait we don't actually hire interns as civilians they are always contracted, so, nope... and if we did, we'd be fucked anyway since you're now increasing the cost by 40% but I'm stuck with a budget set 12 months ago and can't actually afford that.

We've been through this already. Fake news.

I need to hire 20 folks for round one. January we hired 17, retained 8, but lost 5 others to their vision of greener pasture, so net +3. We recently bumped our starting wages $2.50 an hour. It has helped, but not sure it is going to be enough to compete. It is absolutely crazy. Glad I am a short timer in the work force as not sure how much more I could put up with. Most are lazy, feel they deserve top wages just for showing up part time, have no dedication, no respect, and if I could catch the one that writes on the restroom walls I would break the MFers arm.

So much in common with this I just needed to quote it. I just got a text that one of the girls they’re trying to hire just showed up 2.5hrs late, but she’s eating breakfast in the break room right now. This shit! Had a good long conversation late last summer with the corporate HR person. She was hopeful once the gov checks quit coming we could get some more people hired. I told her most likely that will be all the lazy, not worth a damn people that have been living of the gov for the past yr. I hate to say I absolutely nailed it.

Early retirement has been a huge hit to the labor force. It's even worse for trucking. Most truckers are over 45, probably over 50 honestly, and a bunch of 65+ ones retired when covid shutdowns hit.
Trucking, along with many other Skilled jobs, were in short supply, for years, before Covid. Now with the deaths, retirements, & workers that went into Self-employment, has been the real hit! Watching "Ask this old house" today, & "Trades" were discussed. Richard said it best. Since Covid, people got money, & saved money, & just Aching to spend it! The Demand is there, & a fair amount of labor is there. Supply is there, But, it can't get delivered! Probably take two years for everything to sort itself out.

No employee's is not a new thing.Tonya left John Deere three years ago on Feb 14th and they had problems getting/keeping folks for at least a couple of years before she left. She knows the HR chic good and she they made over 600 badges for temp employees in 2017 alone. That was 600 who left after a few days or never showed up after being hired. Some would work until the drug test came back pos and they were escorted out the door.JD is the 2nd 3rd highest paying place in town as use to be a very desirable place to work.I tried years ago to get hired and they never called me for an interview. They are constantly looking for people and have three temp services hiring for them and still cant keep enuf people.

It’s crazy man. We schedule interviews and people don’t even show up.

I work for an equipment rental company that is the sister company to a large GC (Hoar Construction, if you happen to see our signs around Charlotte) and is trying to hire a laborer level position in Houston. Guaranteed 40 hours a week with OT and benefits and isn't terribly demanding . This is the exact problem we're having - last I heard from that office we might have 10% of the applicants actually show up. We've also been trying to hire a diesel mechanic in Birmingham for several months and have only had 1 applicant that's been unemployed for months. In this market, that's a huge red flag. I'm sure there's something we can do to improve our hiring process, but it's left us scratching our heads.

We had 6 folks ready to start today. Interviews, paperwork, drug screen, background checks all completed last week. ONLY 2 show up to start today. WTF is wrong with people? Did not even call or communicate they would not be in, just do not show up. Time effort and money spent for nothing. yes, it does piss me off. I have not clue what the answer is.

I have also been thinking about this a lot lately.

A few ideas I have are:

1. "The Great Wealth Transfer" has started, kicked off by CoCo, 900k extra deaths in the last 2 years, Baby Boomer parents pass without touching their savings or retirement, "Kids" (they are in their 4ds) now have a shit ton of money can make a career change or just hang out or grandbaby Johnny now has money to go to college debt-free or whatever. Basically, large amounts of wealth are getting passed to the younger generation untouched, people are going into YOLO mode and stopping frying chicken at BoJos.

2. The forced closures and "layoffs" gave people the chance to better themselves and they did and now work remotely.

3. Only Fans - Work remote, no meetings, no expectations, just you, a camera, KY, and the Harris Teeter produce aisle.

My $0.02

Not a bad theory at all honestly.

Why do you think that? This is a genuine question, I am not going to try to change your mind or argue about it.

It is an interest of mine to understand other people's points of view of the world.
From what I have seen in annual deaths the cause has been classified differently but the overall numbers have not changed drastically. Seems that drug overdoses have had a larger percentage since the start of 2020 as well. Less deaths classified as heart attack, Flu / Pneumonia doesn’t mean that those factors aren’t at play anymore.

We are struggling here in the public schools. I cannot find a bus driver for anything. Our school currently needs three.
We are struggling finding certified teachers as well. We have quite a few opening in which no one has applied for.

Not much better at other schools.

I'm sure we can debate the pro's and con's of public education but this thread isn't the place. We just don't offer an attractive employment opportunity.

I've been wondering for a good decade why da fuq anybody would become a teacher in NC... for various reasons. The current situation has just ramped that up x5.

Up here we have the same issue but it's just not quite as bad.
