Which 4x4 to buy?

I know that there are some suzuki samurai's over there, just get them built up and they will go anywhere

Thanks friends for the very thoughtful post. I really appreciate the fact that you guys and others care enough to take the time to write suggestion. Although I can't say that I agree with every point, many are right on.
As I was asking for information's on many forums about 4x4 vehicles and now I think that it is good to go for a Jeep Cherokee old one which I could transform later with lifts, big tires, etc....Any advice?
Thanks again for your thoughtful response and wish 2008 will be a GREAT year for you and your dear ones.

As a cherokee owner, I can tell you that they are a great platform for simple buildups, parts are abundant and cheap as hell in the USA. I can do new front rotors and pads (both sides) for the cost of one new yota rotor. With some simple fab skills the uniframe can become a blessing instead of a curse.

That being said, about the only toy that would get me to drop the coin would be a taco(hilux) with a solid front axle and a little diesel in the 2.x range right out of the box. Being in Oz that's not such a tall order for you so I'd seriously consider it.

To me, the difference isn't which is better, both jeeps and yoters are awesome when built right. Its just a question of cost and out-of-the-box capability, and when it comes to those you can't beat an XJ. At least in the US

Whaen I was in Melbourne back in 99 I picked up one of thise 4x4 for sale mags like our truck trader. The plethoria of rigs to modify is beyond our imagination. I liked the old Nissan Patrols myself. Hell you can modify anything with enough $$$ and imagination!
