Who’s headed to KOH?

I'm happy for you to have shared all your experiences with your family and friends. We as a family have done the same for 20+ years wheeling camping, windrock Moab etc. I wonder why you would make an assumption of my selfishness, based on one statement in a public thread. You dont know me and I don't know you. I would never call anyone out like that.

Best wishes to you and I'm happy to live in a country everyone has rights to opinions.

Still want to go to KOH without my loving wife. Would love to go with my son who is an ADULT.

Admit it John, we are just selfish bastards! :D We have dragged our wives and kids begrudgingly along with us on our Jeep trips, camping and hiking adventures for years! We should have let them stay home!

I agree with you in principle, but some guys wives are a lot more high-maintenance than mine...

I wouldn't want to spend a week on the lakebed (or much else) with that sort of person. ;)
If I were to go my wife would be the hardest one to keep home!

For reference for all those who want to see KOH for the first time,

The best vehicle to experience KOH is by far a newer side by side with 13+ inches of wheel travel. Ideally something with 16+ inches of travel that can do 45-50 mph over rough terrain.

Allows you to cover tons of ground and see what all Johnson valley has to offer. Do some light rock trails and see what you can see.

A lot of the rock outcroppings are spread out, and can take a while to get to. This is magnified by riding in a rock/trail rig that can knock your teeth out trying to cover whoop sections for what feels like forever. What we typically build on the east coast for trail riding, is not best suited for covering lots of miles of open desert between rock trails. It’s great for the actual rock trails.

Not saying it can’t be done, just fore warning.

If I were taking my pile to actually wheel JV, it wouldn’t be for KOH week. Maybe at the end of KOH and wheel the following couple days.

Having a newer sxs allows you to see the most stuff faster.

I would also recommend a standalone gps. Preload the coordinates for the major trails you want to see, or one of the many files for JV on the web.

It’s huge out there, and for a first timer, can be overwhelming as to where you actually are.

There are several phone apps that use standalone gps as well, just make sure you have a way to charge on the go.

No fries
I liked your reply. I apologize for my statements that were wrong.
I understand where you might have been coming from, but it's ok. Everyone has an opinion and I'm not going to get a hurt over something like that. Everyone has different priorities experiences, and people in there lives. I'm sure we would probably get along great given the opportunity.

I used a rental 4x4 explorer last time. Speaking from experience, they bottom out on whoops at even 20mph.

so yeah, a UTV would probably be best to get around. One with a good heater would be ideal. It gets colder than you realize, especially when the wi** picks up.

Thanks @Mac5005
Good information, would like to drag my junk out there but I'm sure as you said a SXS does sound like it would serve best.
I do hope to make it one year soon. RQ we should start planning for 2021 or 22. My wife says I need to go.

Ford had some of the best bump stops in the business. Nothing like passing a Jk on 37's in the whoops in a fun-150

Yep. Our bump stops were comprised of the usual along with exhaust pipes and muffler rubber hangers. They flex pretty good when bottomed out. Just have to pry it back off the driveshaft each time bottomed out.

I've often wondered about the logistics of the trip. How's the drive out there? Any dangerous snowy passages? How is the camping on the lakebed? Is ice and water available out there or does that require a trip to town? How far is the nearest town?

Drive out isn't bad. We had snow once and it wasn't a big deal. You can go either 40 or 10/20 choose the clearest route based on weather.

You can get anything on the lake bed. They were delivering pizza to the lake bed if you had a hammer town address. Gas station is about 25-30 min drive. Yuka valley is about 30-45 min drive and they have just about everything.

They have food vendors in hammer town so you just need to figure out how to keep your booze cold. Tent camping isn't fun out there but it's doable. They have Porta crappers on site but they are questionable after a couple days. We rent rvs and that's the way to go

Luckily my boss is cool with the shop computer blasting off road rigs all week.

Buddy’s of mine that I grew up with are out there with their 906 rig. NorthShore Raceworks is their logo. If anyone is out there and gets this stop and tell them KRis Jorgensen says what’s up and watch their jaws hit the ground lol. Best of luck to all racing and safe travels for all travelers. Someday I want to go but not gonna happen until after I get out of the Army ima sure.
