NC State is a great school, I still have alot of family and friends up in Raleigh, so I know it has grown leaps and bounds in the few years since I was last a student there.
Raleigh just makes a point to target college parties, such as the former Brent Rd party, which they used about every cop on the force to shut down about 6 years ago. I know Boone is a lot slacker on that scene, as I was there a month or so ago for one of the play off games and we were partying at "the corner house" and the cops kept riding by and telling people to just stay in the yard. You would never see that in Raleigh, just tickets and/or handcuffs. I would suggest the bar scene, such as Glenwood Ave in downtown, once you turn 21.
As far as the crime aspect, its pretty much common sense, and something you will see in any larger city, such as raleigh, charlotte, greensboro, etc. If you leave it in plain sight or unlocked, then its probably going to disappear. I would suggest a removable face cd player if yours isnt, and bolting down any other type of speaker boxes, and/or a lockable center console. The only thing I had stolen while I was there, was my trailer ball b/c I didnt have a locking hitch pin.
I think you will enjoy it, good luck!!
