Who here is driving a the ford Diesel 6.0

I've got a 04 with almost 200k on it and have not had a problem the key is if it has head studs and egr delete done then your good to go

I am really looking into buying a ford f250 but have heard bad stories about the 6.0. What are ya'lls thought on it?

I bought a spotless 06 last year with 107k. Had all service records and seemed to be one of the good ones. Well, here's a copy/paste from last weekend:

So I'm selling the Edge tuner to help finance the EGR delete and new SCT tuner for the Ford. I crawled under there to remove the EGT probe from the driver's manifold and found bad news:

Option A:

Pull the cab, spend ~$2000 and fix it myself in half the time.

Option B:

Leave the cab on and spend ~$2000 and fix it myself while cussing the whole time because there's no room to work. Oh yeah, in 3x the time.

Option C:

Pay someone ~$3500-$4000 to fix it however they see fit. Who cares about their time.

Option D:

Save yourself some misery and buy something else unless it's been ARP'd and bulletproofed.

I went with D. It feels good to have nothing but Toyotas in my driveway again.

Its all in the way its driven if never tuned should be no problem but egrs don't last forever. I have a bulletproof egr new oil cooler and arp's and love my truck. Every used vehicle can have hidden problems so just go to your local ford dealer and check on a warranty. You dont have to buy the truck there to buy a warranty from them and they'll finance if you need to..good trucks and good luck

206,000 miles on mine. Put one egr cooler at 52000, that I can blame on ford. Did a bunch of injectors, one turbo, and one hpop that I blame on my dumb ass running a 160 hp race tune and starving for fuel. Since I detuned to an aggressive tow tune (+65hp) ive not had a problem.

The key to these is maintenance, I change the oil at 5000 miles and the fuel filters every 20000. Ive still got the stock head gaskets and bolts, and the stock oil cooler.

Well my 06 f350 psd 4x4 tow pig 6.0 just turned over 120k and me and timc spent 8 hours installing a bullet proof egr cooler cleaning the turbo inspecting parts this weekend my powerstroke has been a very reliable performer if you understand the weakpoints and take care of them while being realistic about your expectations then it will serve you well.do you want a dragtruck build a duramax.do you want a sledpuller build a dodge.do you want a tow rig that has the best trans, interior, axles, frames, total construction then buy a ford and beat your wheeling rig and enjoy your tow rig on the way home im driving superdutys for life

Sounds like you're spending most of your time trying to keep your tow rig on the road. Stories like these are what scared me off. I'm a Ford guy... they make a good looking truck. But I dont like walking.

Related... my neighbor has an 06ish King Ranch dually. Beautiful truck. I noticed it blowing white smoke when he pulled out of the neighborhood the other day.

I have a 2005 with 80k on it.

Went ahead and had it bulletproofed at Rudy's in Durham a couple months ago. It's faster and more fun to drive now.

New powermax turbo
head studs
EGR delete
Coolant filter
Exhaust

I change fuel filters every 10k and oil every 5k Been a great truck so far.
I think my right ball joint is down for so might have to get that fixed soon.

So buy a ford , and be prepared
To instantly be working on it

Dunno much but six speed manual Cummins seems the only good way to go

Every vehicle out there has its issues. Ford has the above issues. Dodge has the 53 block, 5th gear nut on NV4500 transmission, and the Killer Dowel Pin on the engine. And thats just off the top of my head.

In my opinion 8hrs of maintenance in two years isn't spending alot of time at all not including the universal stuff like oil and filters the truck drove into the shop we worked on it an drove it home I was never stranded broke down im also fairly certain the egr cooler was blown when I bought the truck an I've towed with it alot but I digress everyone has an opinion but im sure alot of people will talk junk because they had a buddy with a problem or heard from a guy with no further info.look at the signatures of these people giving you the info do they know or do they spend to much time on pirate im just being real with every one I can't talk smack on dodge or chevy tow rigs cuz I ain't never had one but I've drove them rode in them and did alot of research before I bought my junk they are all a compromise just pick your poison

Maybe if you're talking about buying one that's 15 years old... but I wouldn't recommend that, regardless of brand, if you're looking for something reliable.

Sure as long as you dont mind:
the ride of a wagon
the dash to crack and look like shit in less than 2 years
the seats to either split at the seams or just basically be the most uncomfortable thing known to man kind
The interior to rattle more than half full pringles can

I will say this, the newest Ram's are pretty damn sweet...and Ford and Ram have totally left GM behind the last two years...

At least after reading this thread you know what to save up for when you buy a 6.0L. Every truck has their issues, but this specific motor is now pointed out exactly what issues are common. I would buy the diesel that is easier to work on, and has the best "guides" as to what you can expect to repair.

I've helped pull the body off a lincoln navigator to do an engine swap, and we ended up having to do it twice because of an injector stuck wide open and bending a rod. I can say that labor adds up fast when you work a full time job and have to come home and do major jobs. So I would think it would be practical to buy something easy to work on for when the problems do happen. A lot of the 6.0L motor is buried under the cab so it can be a nightmare to begin a head stud job for someone like me.

I see a lot of 6.0s. Saw one not too long ago with 284k that came into the shop; head gaskets are notorious on the 6.0 as well as having to take the cab off for the two rear injectors....

Duramax is a nice truck, Cummins is a nice truck - they're all expensive to fix.

My dad has a 6.4 stroke with a MiniMax, EGR & DPF delete but it was preventative maintenance because the EGR pooped out at 68k miles.

I myself drive a tundra.

My dodge '05 3500 rides good when the drive shaft is in balance but my truck also weighs 9500#
Dash cracks were like ten years ago
My seats are fine and comfy
Never heard any rattles even with the d shaft out of balance.

Problems w/ Dodges
-Cheap wiring (in doors atleast)
-frontend ball joints, unit bearings but you have that w/ any truck when hauling heavy
-Two piece drive shaft sucks ass.
-11-12 MPG on good days

Biggest problem with all diesels

-Idiots w/ a progammer that think they are smarter than the engineers that spent a billion dollars designing the engines

Says the guy who had a 6.0 lemon-lawed.

Shrug my neighbors 07 is cracked all to shit, and I cant stand to ride in it either. Hell he went to the beach with his camper last weekend and asked to borrow my 6.0 because he didnt want to ride that far in the dodge.

Now I am admittedly a noise freak, but Ive yet to ride in a pre 2010 Dodge that didnt have 10,000 dash rattles, air rushes around the window seals, and generally sounded liek it was going to fall apart.

Mine' is only 7,900 but it gets 17mpg all day long and 14.5-15mpg towing 13k

You know Ive been waiting for you to reply just so I could tell you you're full of crap.

Yeah, I dunno where he's getting 12. Only way that happens for me is pulling the hauler.

9.7 to the beach and back pulling a 30' camper
like I said I'm weighing almost a ton more than most w/ a steel flat bed and a dump hoist that probably weighs 7-800 lbs plus it's a dually.

That's how I'm justifying it. Don't think anything is wrong. No signs of injector failure or anything. I do have one code I think it's p541. Low voltage on air intake heater but it's a soft code.

Yeah, but what's it get empty?

Thats in the ballpark for what I get towing a house... weight doesnt matter as much as the wind.

The thing to remember is fords psd problems are known and everyone knows how to make the right and with alittle time and $$ they can't be beat..IMO
