ok yall I'm ready to try and plan a trip to one of these places:
Harlan, AOP, Windrock, Potts Mountain.. these 4 seem to be the best and closest to this area (Hickory NC).
I know I don't want to go alone to probably 3 out of these 4 so any groups planning a trip to either of these in the next month or so and if so, would you care to have extra company and share your dates.
I'm ready to take my rig out for some real wheeling but I'm not as balzy as probably many others and really wanna be with a experienced group at one of these places if possible to not only have fun, but be much safer having much more experienced wheelers to follow and take direction and pointers from.
It's a 97 ZJ 4.0, superduty axles, super heavy cut 40" TSL, 5:08:1 crawl ratio, pretty descent articulation for such small lift, cage with harness and the other norm. I've worked out all the kinks, and so far at 5 psi it crawls pretty impressively and my new tires grip beyond no other lol. With guidance and direction I believe I can/could take this jeep places!!
If you don't care to share your next adventures at one of these places and having an extra company, that would be pretty cool.

(As an extra side mention, IF and ONLY IF you happen to have an empty spot on a trailer to haul my rig on such an event I would totally pay for fuel there and back plus any amount extra you would like since I'm not too sure about my wife's condition towing as far as these places are but worth asking, otherwise will figure something out lol).

I also wouldn't mind having a spotter at one of these places so if you or someone you know doesn't have a rig but would want to go, I do have a 20ft trailer, new heavy duty tires just put on it, new bearings and pulls my rig great so if they want to come with their truck and pull my rig, I'll pay for fees, gas and such and they can ride and drive around with me all weekend. (My rig is pretty fun to drive in double low lol, and can handle the rev limiter too when needed hahaha, been trying to avoid that lately)

I’d say hit Harlan. You have a good chance of running into people at the park. If not no biggie. My dad and I went for a weekend by ourselves in two rigs and it was great time. My only caution is if your rig goes down it could be a serious haul back to camp depending on where you set up.

Our club ride is Harlan the weekend of the 8th, and @tsconver was planning to go. However, most folks have had to back out and he was hoping to link up with folks wanting to ride some of the milder trails.
Y’all would probably be of the same mindset and trail desire.

I’ve never known them to do anything to the trails except cut back the new growth in the spring and remove fallen trees when needed.

Shoot Conver a PM. He was thinking of backing out cause there was no one to ride mild trails with. I believe James is possibly going as well, and Robbie Mozeley also. All of who like to wheel mild to moderate trails. Unless James brings his big Jeep, that man ain’t skeered to wheel when he’s in that thing

I'm definitely looking for hard stuff, just not some of the crazy as hell stuff I see some of y'all do lol.
Was gonna hit gulches but that's not really much of a challenge.

hey bud, so would ya'll be leaving on that friday and returning on Sunday? if so, what kind of time frame you looking at leaving on that day to arrive. just trying to figure out timing if we can plan this. thanks
I'm going crazy trying to make this doable as this kinda of place is like my "bucket list" of places to go lol

You arent hitting the right trails at the Gulches then, or your rig is awesome. They have a few that are almost impossible to climb.

John I have spot 14 reserved at the North Evarts campground and need to call and cancel it today, unless you want it. The first night is paid, $25/night. I have it reserved Thursday to Sunday morning. So the balance is $50. This is a site with power, close to the trail head, and has an extremely nice well lit bath house that’s all clean and done in nice tile.

I’ll try to give you till the end of the day but I need to call and cancel tomorrow if you can’t take it.

As for trail riding I would recommend you scoop up a map and go straight to Pinball, Rail Bed, Fish Fossil, play around in Lower Rock Garden, then hit Killin Time, then enjoy a nice cruise across Trail 15 and start venturing out to what you feel comfortable with from there.

You gotta go try the Tater Munchers at the Dairy Hut. Also, be sure to work your way out to trail 31 and go look at Lions Den. It’s a short trail worth walking thru, maybe you’ll even want to try it.

Note: on the map, those distances looks really far but if you keep the pace up on the main trails (green/blue) you can actually get around pretty good. It’s not that far. I can get from Evarts out to Mason Jar in under 30 minutes usually.

The campground I’m talking about is circled in blue. You follow the red to go into the trail head. It’s not far at all.

Also that site I had was big enough for my truck and 27’ gooseneck so it’s big enough to share of y’all want. That way y’all can camp for the whole weekend for $25ea

Dairy hut wasn't open a couple weekends ago.

That’s surprising. I would have guessed the Evarts was carrying on as usual. But how quickly I forget that not long again he whole park was shut down cause KY has a crazy governor like ours o_O

Dairy Hut was open July 4th weekend. Rail bed was un-passable by me. 42's in case you didn't know. Was a winch fest to get me out that weekend. All exits where slick and my tired ole 4.0 just couldn't get enough to go up the alternate exits. Main exit has the two rocks side by side. I ended up on top of them.... Fish Fossil was eat up bad. the rocks slid more in the trail and the exit was rutted bad on the left side. Killin' Time was about what I remembered. Lower Damnation no longer has 5 ledges, more like 2 now. I'd recommend that one for sure.

Back in January the exits of Rail Bed were gettting pretty ate up. Kinda glad Fish Fossil is getting a little harder, was a cake walk getting out last time. I only remember this ledge from last August on Lower Damination:

It was dumb undercut and as you can tell @Joe J. on 38s about dumped it. Only one to make it up were @Jody Treadway and a 1 ton 4Runner. Most of us lacked tire size, hp, and driver talent. Some how I lacked all 3.
