Why do you need a bigger house?

I should have invested in those BEE safe or whatever. They're popping up all over. Now THAT'S a debate I can totally stand with you on! I'll qualify my broad statement with this disclaimer: In MOST CASES..... because there are many exceptions and reasons why a storage unit is needed.........However, in general, If you have so much CRAP that you have to rent a unit to keep it in, you likely have a hoarding problem.
We have a couple of empty offices at work filled with crap from our house. My wife can't come to grips that the furniture, TVs, etc she bought 20 years ago aren't worth much these days. Said we'd use them in a rental one day. But I doubt they'd be aesthetic.

I don't like big houses NOR stairs. I've always had a simple home. I do have a big ass shop and like it just the way it is. People want bigger homes because they want to keep up with the Jones's and must impress others.
I'm going to rephrase my statement. If a family has 4 kids and a live in parent then they need a house to accommodate that and if they have the funds to buy and keep it up and not stress about the cost then I'm all for it. I was aiming at the more materialistic people who think they have to have a 5000 sq ft house in a trendy neighborhood for two people just because their friends live in the same.

Our last house was 1500 sq. ft 3 BR/ 2.5 bath. Layout was good, was plenty big enough for us when we had no kids, but hosting more than one family at a time was pretty tight and more than two people in the kitchen was infuriating. Add two kids and my office goes from the spare bedroom to a 3x5 landing at the top of the stairs.

When we built our current house, we wanted enough rooms for family/friends to come visit for extended periods and a living area/kitchen that could comfortably handle a lot of people at once. My instinct would’ve been to stay smaller, but there’s no point in having more rooms if they’re just gonna be tiny. We ended up just shy of 2,800 sq ft. Wouldn’t want anything bigger, but glad we didn’t go smaller.

Somehow my office space still ended up being in the garage lol.

2400 downstairs with 600 bonus/playroom upstairs. It's nice to have enough room that we can get away from each other if we want. Old house was maybe 1100 and outside was the only escape. House started off bigger but we were trying to be budget conscious so we trimmed some rooms. Looking back, that was dumb and I wish we hadn't. We took away the cheapest sqftage and it probably didn't move the needle $5000 at the end of the day.

Thank you for phasing my initial sentiments more accurately. 😁
