Why do you need a bigger house?

We could use more house. Is it a need? No. 2 adults plus 3 kids. Our boys share a room and that won't change for a while. We are having to convert the play room to a girls room soon. We have 1200 SF, and the only real complaint is we want to add a master suite since right now it's "3" bed and 1 very small bath. First priority is buying up land around us though. I do not intend on moving again. Only thing that would change that would be moving to the family farm.
I would give my left testicle for my grandpas farm in Ashe County. After he died, we were in no financial shape to buy it.. but we've regretted not being able to ever since.

I still have dreams about that place. I spent every summer there and many a weekend growing up.

We have a 1500 sqft 3/1. Bought it for the property mostly, but I have been happy about the size. I wanted to build a barndo, but the wife wanted "something that looked like a house". She also wanted to live in a neighborhood, and I did not. We settled on a few acres with neighbors. Since she has realized that she'd like to be more remote. Main wish, is to add another bath or master suite, have more property, and more shop space.

We are going to be empty nesters in ~10yrs, so IMO, next place is something similar or smaller in size, on more land, with more outdoor space and a bigger shop. Id prefer to have a small home, with a smaller vacation home vs 1 larger one.

Which leads to the next step, rental storage units. those damn things are EVERYWHERE! How much stuff do you need? :D
I should have invested in those BEE safe or whatever. They're popping up all over. Now THAT'S a debate I can totally stand with you on! I'll qualify my broad statement with this disclaimer: In MOST CASES..... because there are many exceptions and reasons why a storage unit is needed.........However, in general, If you have so much CRAP that you have to rent a unit to keep it in, you likely have a hoarding problem.

Agreed. There are legit reasons, but I’d be willing to bet 60% if not more is someone’s inability to let shit go.

This. My sister/BIL has been paying for a storage unit for years. It is full of baby clothes and stuff from when they sold their house. Their daughter is almost 9 and they have no intention to have another kid. Nothing in there is worth more than a few months of rent.

Yea I'm afraid we will lose part of the farm. That side doesn't live in nc anymore and wants nothing to do with it, but won't sell it to us.

Why do you need a SxS?

Why do you need a new 2500 diesel truck?

Why do you need a pair of jet skis?

Why do you need a boat?

Why do you need a new Corvette?

Why do you need a $50 buggy?

Why do you need to take a 2 week vacation in Switzerland?

People buy what they want, including houses. We wanted a big house on several acres, so we built what we wanted 13 years ago. We plan on staying here until the grim reaper shows up.

I think it interesting they way you switched from a list of "Need" to statements around what you "wanted".

I think you are 100% accurate on People buy what they want. and I guess that's closer to my feel curiosity. Why do people feel the want or need for a bigger house? in my opinion, more power to you, go for it. Hell, I laugh at my parents. They have a 6Ksqft house in the mountains. 3bed 2 bath. But that's what they wanted. Seems like an awful lot to take care of. I kinda wish I was back in my 1200sqft house. :)

Our last house was 960 sqft 2 bed 1 bath and built in 1940. It had zero closest space and the worst layout in History for the living room. We only had people over when it was nice out because the inside got way too cramped with guest. And I had no room for my dad or brother to stay when they came into town.

We both want a house where we have enough closet space for our clothes, space to store my wife's seasonal decorations, a kitchen that is enjoyable to cook and spend time together in, a bedroom that I can walk around the bed in and not bump into the dresser. A master bathroom I can bend over in and not hit my head and ass on opposing walls. A living room that has enough room to seat our entire family comfortably.

We have 2 boys and are planning for a 3rd child. We have picked out a house plan that is a single story 4bed/3.5bath 2600 sqft and will have a full walkout basement. This is about the smallest footprint I have found that fits our desires. We will use the apartment area in our barn as a guest suite instead of finishing the bonus room over the garage and my wife can store her seasonal stuff in there instead.

Our dream has always been to have a house you can't see from the road, with no visible neighbors, and a nice place to call home. After 12 years of living cramped, I'm ok spending what it cost to have a nice home. We have the land, now I just have to scrape the pennies together to build the house.

Your place is a rinky dink DUMP that you should be ashamed of. Honestly I don't know WHO would be impressed by it

 That was hard to even type. There's few homes I've seen that would satisfy my need to pee of the front AND back porch without witnesses, and my wifes desire to live in a nice neighborhood where she can't see @jeepinmatt latest purchase  but damn if you don't have one of the coolest pads I've seen

Yeh, that was my point. Nobody needs a boat or a big house. In our case, we just wanted a big house. We wanted to be able to have all of our extended family over and all sit at the dining room table for Thanksgiving, Christmas, Mothers Day, Easter etc and not be cramped. We wanted large rooms and patios for everyone to be able to sit and enjoy.

Maybe this will help you understand our "need"

When my wife and I were married I brought 2 kids (10 & 6) and she brought a daughter (8) to the mix. We NEEDED a house that had at least 4 bedrooms, as she needed a room for her home office. We found one with 4 bedrooms and a bonus room, with a 3 car garage. That was PERFECT. The girls shared a room, and the kids had their own playroom. Once the kids went off to college we decided to temporarily downsize to build our forever home.
I built the barndo and had 1300sqft with 2 bedrooms. It was for us while we built our forever home, then my mother once we moved to the big house. Since the wife works from home I built it with 2 bedrooms (1 bedroom, one home office). We lived there for 18 month and felt fine, but with 2 kids away at college both several hours away, and one out of college and working in charlotte, we could never have them all home at once. In fact we really couldn't have 2 at home as there was only the couch to serve as a spare bed.

So for our forever house, we NEEDED a house with more bedrooms. Ideally we'd like to have 2 bedrooms in addition to our bedroom and her office, and something similar to what we HAD and were use to. So I designed a one story home that met those needs and wasn't huge. But the month before we were going to break ground, roof trusses went up 300% overnight :gtfo: then lumber, then sheet, then....hell EVERYTHING went stupid. I was nagging Jody every week about futures and things looked horrible. So we decided to NOT pay 4x what it should cost to build and bought a house for MUCH less than I could have built, even BEFORE prices went stupid.

There was literally nothing available for sale that met our NEEDS that wasn't slightly larger in sqft than what we required. And I WANTED a 3 car garage. One that you can park a 4 door full size truck in. The houses that were of a humble size and were functional for what we NEEDED came with a 2 car, single door garage that would fit 2 prius' And ironically were priced VERY close to the home we have. So it was a no-brainer on our end.

I could give 2 shits about the Jones' or the Jacksons and who thinks WHAT, and I'm in no way "proud" of my house. Its a place to rest my head. I really don't think much about it. In fact. I'm WAY more proud of my Barndo and it's whopping 1300sqft than my house. Several dozen members here have been to the barndo, but I think only Clay and Phillip have even been to my house.

1500 sq ft 3/2 single story ranch
2 adults
1 teenager
2 dogs
1 cat

and I work from home

We make it work, it would be great to have a slightly bigger house with an bonus room and larger master bath, but I bought the house as a single guy, and no way am I upgrading in this market, and we love our house.

I don't miss my 2500 sq ft house that I had before this one, tons of unused space and too much cleaning.

my wife and I were having this exact conversation last night. I told my wife that I feel like my house just isn't comfortable to me anymore. You can't escape any noise unless you are in the garage or outside. The layout is just weird but I love the location and the fact that we are in a cul-de-sac. I would like to have more room inside and out.

Because we can! More space to live feels pretty damn good!

Did you pick up a new ZJ? I saw your post looking for a project.

Nah I have had that one since about 2009 it just won't die lol. How is your yj doing these days?

It is not going at all. I have reached out to a few guys about finishing it for me.

I want a smaller house on a single level, but with 4 kids, a smaller house isn't really in the picture at the moment. My one son already sleeps on the back porch (yes, outside, by his own choice) for 3/4 of the year (all except summer). During the summer he sleeps in the storage area/Lego clubhouse (the eave of the house so you can't really stand up in there) 🤣. My goal is when they are all graduated to build a 1-2 bedroom house and move to Pinnacle, that's the only way I'll be able to afford a house by then, may have to live in a conex...

We got a mortgage on our house back in 2021 to use to build a house at our land, but then prices went through the roof to build, so the money sits in the bank earning more than what I pay in interest.

I don’t.
In fact with age and health and kids gone, I’m ready for a 2 bedroom (one for us, one for grandkids) condo!!!

I hear you Paul! I'm just a few short months away from completely debt free and I just can't wait to get over that last little hurdle!
