Hey, my wife and I are looking for a replacement for the 4runner we have now. We looked at commanders, Fjcrusier, new tahoes and the Chevy Hybrid Truck. Why is the FJcrusier only 21k. It is very nice has nice power, options but cost less than most Toyota Vehicles?

Anybody know something I dont?

From what I looked at, that's the 2wd  base model. but they do top out right around 30k, which isn't bad!

All the hype in the magazines, was about Toyota wanting to keep the price low to make it affordable

Also, for years Toyota SUV's MFG in Japan carried a $4000-$10000 tariff tax to import to the US (at least that’s what I understood) depending on the model

If the FJ were assembled in the US/Mexico/Canada then it would forgo the tariff. Maybe that’s why?

None of the above is confirmed fact, just what I’ve come to understand over the years as to why Toyota SUV’s are so damn expensive

As mentioned above, I do know that they are really pushing to compete w/ Jeep. Good way to do this is for teh cost to be low. That in itself dosn'texplain how they can do it, just maybe why.
You know - it COULD be that most of the other Toy vehicles are just overpriced...

Yeah...what you said. Not to mention it ain't the most attractive thing on the lot.

Maybe, but how many Pontiac Azteks, Honda Elements, Chevy Avalanches (with tupperware), Nissan Frontiers, etc. have you seen around? Plenty.

I think it'll go very well with their intended market.

Shame the top doesn't come off though. Might have gotten one for the Mrs. if it did.

With 32's standard, a nice arch in the front of the frame rails, and the wheel openings, I think it'll be a good wheeler with a solid axle under the front, and won't require 10" of lift to get it under there...

I really think the target audience here is a bit different from most of the otehr cute-yutes and trucks mentioned above... they are going more towards the Jeep/TJ market, a *real* off-road toy vehicle. Doubt their expected any soccer moms to buy one.

Any bets on how long until the first aftermarket upgrade parts are out?

Things are already out. The FJC that was at the roundup was wearing a 2" lift. Since it's based on the Prado, OME should have a suspension system out shortly.

I meant to draw no comparison between the FJC and the vehicles above.. that was just a short list of unattractive vehicles. Soccer Mom's don't buy anything with suicide rear doors..

They are trying to compete with the Wrangler basically... a staggering LARGE portion of them will be sold in 4x4 WITH electronic locking rear differential. 2wd is only 5% I think of units built or so.

You should be able to get one, with the elocker in the 24-26k range all day long and it will have a bunch of nice goodies with that.

They are using the same v6 that is in the Tacomas and it is a STRONG engine! FJC is only rated at 5000lbs towing or I think I would be driving one right now! (I really need 6000-7000 to be safe, but might test drive one sometime to see how she does pulling the camper...)

I was thinking we might see Mr Hatton sporting one and showing us what it can do IFS (and adding ARB to front)....but since he went diesel for now that may be a while....

TUNDRA

wait till we bring the new tundra out later this year, we have to get two new lifts in our shop for them. dont know the price on them yet ,bet it aint going to be cheap.. the look of them aint no better!!!

I have already seen two of them running around Winston. They look interesting. I think I also read somewhere that a lot of the Tacoma aftermarket stuff should bolt right up to the new FJ.

ttp://www.toyota.com/vehicles/minisite/fjbulletin/index.html?s_van=GM_FJ_HOME_FJ_BULLETIN THIS ONE HAS A FEW VIDS/PICKS. MIGHT HELP. NOT YELLING IM ON THE COMP. @ WORK HAS TO HAVE CAPS ON. JUST ONE OF THE FORT. ONES THAT GETS TO BE ON THE COMP. ALL DAY

Went out and drove one just before I purchased the current new vehicle, and learned very quickly about one really super-duper flaw the over-hyped re-do of a 4Runner chassis has: You'll need the mirrors just to back into the vehicle behind you. Visibility sucks ass. You can't see SHIT from the driver's seat unless you do use the mirrors. What a real please-blow-smoke-up-my-ass disappointment it is for me, a long term Toyota fan. I've only owned 8 since 1969.

I was looking at these trucks last night. The only models on the lot were 31k and change, that ain't cheap! I think its more in line with a h2 than a wrangler, which does make it's price seem cheap.

All in all, i don't like it. i could live with the looks, but visibility is horrible, and a plastic floor just doesn't appeal to me. plus, it's fuel mileage is horrible, and it's ifs. Give it a good diesel, and real front axle, and i would overlook it's other flaws for toyota dependability

MSRP on an H2 is 52k ....MSRP on a rubicon unlimited is over 30k
