WOW.. way to pratice what you preach..Al Gore you SUCK

natural gas is power. he is not huffing the stuff.....i think.

it powers your stoves, water heaters and heat pump....just like electricity.

Well thats lame. So how much does he actually spend on power? Thats a terribly skewed article :shaking:

Ding ding ding, we have a winner.

But it is a nonrenewable resource, nonetheless.

At least he DOES pay a $420/mo premium for the electricity coming from renewable sources (e.g., wind, solar). Gotta give SOME credit there.
Too bad we can't all afford to pay MORE for renewable sources.

Personally, I'm perfectly happy with my power coming from the blood of ground up small children if it will save me a buck ...

Square foot ? How about Cubic Ft.. I'm sure its a huge mansion of a place with super tall ceilings and vast open areas and probably lots of windows etc... So I'm sure if you could work some math magic to find that he probably uses LESS energy at his home than a similar sized home in the same relative area... That said Al Gore is almost as awesome as Chuck Norris.

How is the article terribly skewed?

The average american household uses between 11,000 - 15,000 kWh / year... Al Gore uses that EVERY MONTH... regardless how big his house is, energy is energy... non renewable is non renewable... If he's so environmentally oriented he'd sacrafice some and buy a smaller house of say 7,500 square feet...

Natural Gas is very common around here now (not sure about W-S) but it's very popular in Charlotte, Raleigh, Greensboro, etc...It's almost impossible to find a house w/o it in Charlotte... It's also much more efficient in the winter as well as your hot water heater, etc.

Any way you look at it Al's full of shit...

I never said he wasn't full of it.
What's I'm saying is that the article is intentionally misleading by giving a very disrted viewpoint, misconstruing statistics etc.... making it SOUND even worse than it is. Taking something that might be a little execssive and making it sound liek a huge deal.
You are correct, he uses more than the average household by a large measure. And that is a pretty big blight for somebody who does what he does.
But he also has a big ass house and it simply is not fair to compare kwh per sq foot in the manner they do, like Yager pointed out. Heating per sq foot on a new small home is simply not the same as on an older big ass one. You're an engineer, right?
That is all.

Of course it's misleading... all responsible journalism is.... isn't it...

As for heating a new smaller house vs. an older large house.. Who know's what all he's done to improve energy efficiency at his casa... green roof? I mean who knows... The size of the house does have something to do with it but isn't the deciding factor in terms of energy consumption by any means..

Now I'm sure if you compare his house to some clebs house in beverly hills.. Al Gore's will seem like a blessing to the environment..

most time civil engineers dont deal w/ HVAC or design houses... we leave that up to ME's and Architects... So, I've never messed w/ HVAC or house design, but I have done a decent amount of sustainable design and if they can make university buildings more efficent and use less energy than a measely 10,000 sf mansion... well size just doesn't matter here... Anyway you look at it his energy usage is ridiculous based on what he "preaches" everyday...

I think he'd be better served moving to Antarctica to try to hold the ice shelfs together from all this global warming....

guys...Al gore doesnt use all that energy to heat his house. thats why he gained all that weight, so he doesnt have to heat his house. the energy consumption comes mostly from powering the internet. you guys think this thing runs on little cables strung accross the land? if Al's house were to burn down, the internet would go out for ever!

we should all live in a small 1 room buildings. Shed ourselves of our lavish lifestyles and live a simple life with only the bare necessities in life... Ok, who's first ????

as long as i get to keep my cruiser and URE stays open....im there.

"After the Tennessee Center for Policy Research exposed Gore’s massive home energy use, the former Vice President scurried to make his home more energy-efficient. Despite adding solar panels, installing a geothermal system, replacing existing light bulbs with more efficient models, and overhauling the home’s windows and ductwork, Gore now consumes more electricity than before the “green” overhaul."

That statement is the one that depresses me the most out of them all

you suggested it.
You go first.

Dibs on your rig for 5$.

The whole jist behind global whining is is the increase of governmental involvement and control in the economy and our lives. The more governmental control the more income can easily be re-distributed to those groups the govt favors. It is the do as i say not as I do mentality and we know what is best for you.

I am not tring to defend him but no one is mentioning the fact that he closed his office buildings that he runs all his stuff from and moved it to his house. So he is running everything from there. So that is why the bill went up because he has everything there + employees running things 7 days a week. So if you took what he would be running from a large office building + his house he is infact saving some energy. Again I dont agree with all he says or does but when you bash someone one need all the facts.

A few pertinent details have been left out, of course, such as the fact that one reason the Gore family's utility bills run so high is that they pay premium prices to get 100 percent of their power from Tennessee's Green Power Switch program, which draws from renewable resources such as wind, solar, and methane gas; such as the fact that the Gore family invests in "carbon offsets" to allay the environmental impact of their power usage; and such as the fact that the 10,000-square-foot mansion serves not only as their residence, but also as a workspace for both Al and Tipper Gore
From thiis site.
http://urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_tale_two_houses.htm
But looke at Geoges house and compare the two and you see Gore can do more If he put some effort into it.

Lol....Is he using green power to heat his pool. $544.00 a month....just for the pool house! and thats the Bill from Nashville Gas Co. NOT Tennesse Valley Authority (who is running the Green Switch program. And only SOME of the power he buys come from the Green Switch Program. The Government buildings in Tennessee use 100% Green Power Switch energy, why didnt Gore Rent an office there instead?

Global Warming is a Farce. Al Gore knows it and he got busted on it with his house and now he is trying to cover his ass buy spending (wasting) all this money to "go green" if he is such a big supporter...shouldnt he have already BEEN GREEN? Not to mention, how much was spent trying to renovate that 80 year old house? what kind of carbon foot print did that leave? and....i'd be interested to know if there were illegal labourers working there.

Once again, I'm not trying to justify anything - but look at the sq footage on his house. Reports are in the 10,000 ft range. Who knows what the "average" hoem size is that they used in this article, but I'd bet bottom dollar it's biased to the low end to work in their favor (averages are always heavily skewed by high numberes and shouldn't be used w/ things like thsi anyway, median is better!)
But lets say it's 1,500-2,000 sq ft.
That makes Gore's home 5-7.5x larger. Now, energy use per sq ft is not linear, it gets bigger faster on the high end - by 3x+ the average for "small" buildings does not surprise me at all.
All I'm saying is that you really have to be careful about reports like this. Clearly somebody is out to make a point that may or may not treally be there. Make sure apples=apples etc.
blah bl;ah blah... he's a hipocrit. He's not practicing what he preaches, and thus, Ken's original post brings the funny. :D
