Al Gore spent, what, $10 million making his house energy efficient? His electric bill increases by 10%...

http://www.tennesseepolicy.org/main/...article_id=764

NASHVILLE - In the year since Al Gore took steps to make his home more energy-efficient, the former Vice President’s home energy use surged more than 10%, according to the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.

“A man’s commitment to his beliefs is best measured by what he does behind the closed doors of his own home,” said Drew Johnson, President of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research. “Al Gore is a hypocrite and a fraud when it comes to his commitment to the environment, judging by his home energy consumption.”

In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month.

In February 2007, An Inconvenient Truth, a film based on a climate change speech developed by Gore, won an Academy Award for best documentary feature. The next day, the Tennessee Center for Policy Research uncovered that Gore’s Nashville home guzzled 20 times more electricity than the average American household.

After the Tennessee Center for Policy Research exposed Gore’s massive home energy use, the former Vice President scurried to make his home more energy-efficient. Despite adding solar panels, installing a geothermal system, replacing existing light bulbs with more efficient models, and overhauling the home’s windows and ductwork, Gore now consumes more electricity than before the “green” overhaul.

Since taking steps to make his home more environmentally-friendly last June, Gore devours an average of 17,768 kWh per month –1,638 kWh more energy per month than before the renovations – at a cost of $16,533. By comparison, the average American household consumes 11,040 kWh in an entire year, according to the Energy Information Administration.

In the wake of becoming the most well-known global warming alarmist, Gore won an Oscar, a Grammy and the Nobel Peace Prize. In addition, Gore saw his personal wealth increase by an estimated $100 million thanks largely to speaking fees and investments related to global warming hysteria. <= HOLY HELL!

“Actions speak louder than words, and Gore’s actions prove that he views climate change not as a serious problem, but as a money-making opportunity,” Johnson said. “Gore is exploiting the public’s concern about the environment to line his pockets and enhance his profile.”

The Tennessee Center for Policy Research, a Nashville-based free market think tank and watchdog organization, obtained information about Gore’s home energy use through a public records request to the Nashville Electric Service.

If global warming realy exists, then why are alot of the record highs back 40's and 50's? Al Gore "did" invent the internet too right? hahaa

OK i'm not defending anyone or trying to start a debate or fight... however, thsi sentence is extremely misleading....
"In the past year, Gore’s home burned through 213,210 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity, enough to power 232 average American households for a month."

Apples and oranges, they are comparing how much energy his house uses in 12x the time of the "average" home (whatever that is). Granted it is still excessive, but no need to exaggerate the facts.... present them accurately please...

bingo^ whether I agree with the article or not I hate when people try to bend the information to make it seem more dramatic.

OK how about 19 houses for 1 year, still accurate either way.

duh, people. didn't you know he's been working on an ultrasupersonic laser beam that will fix the ozone layer through meticulous placement. he stays up all night tinkering with it, and all he has time to eat are pizza and beer, that's why he's gained weight. and since he's up all night, he has to keep the lights on to see because he hasn't perfected his nightvision contacts yet. and since the lights have to stay on, the power bill goes up. see, it all makes sense when you know all the facts.

what a douche.

gobal warming is real. its caused by over active sunspots and flare ups. its a natural cycle of the sun. it also has nothing to do with the amount of carbon on earth. in fact, it has NOTHING to do with ANYTHING on earth.

Just remember the 70's (if you were around)....IMPENDING ICE AGE!!!!!

We were doomed then to a life of glaciers due to global cooling predictions. Same thing then, scientists get paid (grants) to study and return the popular opinion. Dissenters don't get grants.

now just get everyone to believe you and we'll be all set. ;)

The last article brought up a good point about the faint sun paradox. Stars brighten over their lifetime i.e., get hotter. as the sun gets hotter so does the earth. Not only does carbon in the atmosphere reflect heat back into the earth, it also reflects it back into space. its not a two way mirror!! so as the sun gets warmer, its important to reflect more sunlight back into space. Seems to me, the world has it backwards! we need a BIGGER carbon foot print.

Once again, I'm not trying to justify anything - but look at the sq footage on his house. Reports are in the 10,000 ft range. Who knows what the "average" hoem size is that they used in this article, but I'd bet bottom dollar it's biased to the low end to work in their favor (averages are always heavily skewed by high numberes and shouldn't be used w/ things like thsi anyway, median is better!)
But lets say it's 1,500-2,000 sq ft.
That makes Gore's home 5-7.5x larger. Now, energy use per sq ft is not linear, it gets bigger faster on the high end - by 3x+ the average for "small" buildings does not surprise me at all.

All I'm saying is that you really have to be careful about reports like this. Clearly somebody is out to make a point that may or may not treally be there. Make sure apples=apples etc.

And to keep us on topic:

Here's the setup. Fact, scientist believe we are nearing the end of the high sunspot activity cycle. meaning....global warming is almost over and we are approaching the next ice age, or atleast a cooling period. Al Gore has some thoughts on this as well........

Al Gore: Global warming responsible for disappearing sunspots
Posted on June 5th, 2008
Former Vice President Al Gore warned that global warming on Earth is causing sunspots to disappear at an alarming rate, and that a new sunspot tax should be imposed as part of a solution for the problem.

Gore made the remarks while giving a speech at the Alliance for Climate Protection’s Climate Change Solutions Summit Alliance of the Greater Association of Climate Change Alliances of Nashville, Tennessee (ACPCCSSAGACCANT). He warned of disastrous consequences should the sun continue to operate without its spots.

“Sunspots have virtually disappeared from the sun,” the climate politician explained. “And we know from historical evidence that a cooling trend on Earth always follows after this happens. That means that, historically, it’s always warm on Earth before the sunspot-induced cooling trend happens. And we know it only gets warm here on Earth if there’s a climate change that causes it to get warm. And that means global warming. Carbon dioxide causes global warming because humans breath it out a lot before the sun loses its spots. So the conclusion is inescapable: Global warming is causing the sun to lose its spots, much like a leopard would if dunked in too much bleach.”

Gore laid out one possible solution to the sunspot problem.

“To restore the sunspots, we could build a big rocket ship and go to the sun and drop lots of hydrogen bombs all over it,” the Tennessee native said as the audience chuckled. “Yes, I know… that’s a silly idea, because it’s expensive and there’s no guarantee of success. Option number two is a sunspot tax on everyone who doesn’t live in Tennessee.”

The audience applauded loudly as Gore performed a Michael Jackson moonwalk across the stage.

After the speech, the inventor of the Internet rode off on the mechanical lift seen in his An Inconvenient Truth documentary. In order to stay carbon neutral while traveling, Gore hires illegal aliens to pull the lift with towropes.

My solution comes from Tennessee as well... In Lynchburg lies the solution!
Sned a whole :poop:ton of Jack Daniels up to the sun and get it DRUNK!!!
If the sun is drunk, it would not know if it is day or night so then it would not shine when it's supposed to. No sun shining = no excessive heating of the Earth. And... if we send enough and the sun passes out, then we would not have to worry about it for a good while...

We could start a JDIV to the sun. :D

bad idea. it would create a JD shortage here on earth which would cause the price of oil to go up.

Al Gore's humble home:

FIRST: 213,210 kWh / 12 = 17,800 kWh/month
SECOND: 17,800 kWh / 10,000 SF = 1.78kWh/SF

Average House:
FIRST: Average usage = 12,000kWh / 12 = 1,000 kWh/month
SECOND: 1,000 kWh / 2500 SF = 0.40 kWh/SF

So.. Al's house uses almost 4.5X more energy/SF than the average american house...

Is my math wrong.. In any event I do always get a kick out of the evening weather saying we broke a record high / low.... previous one was set back in 1950....

Global Warming FTW!

what in the hell can he be using that much energy for?!

I mean its a large house, I can see it being a more a month, but for god sakes, 16k a month ELECTRIC BILL?!

Aparently it's actually combined w/ the gas (natural gas) bill. Many power companies do that. NG isn't so common around here.

lol...i pay about 40 dollars a month for power in the winter.

but....i pay about 120 for natural gas!

it flip flops in the summer.
