Everything you just stated is correct.

That doesn't make it right. What about common sense? Parents go to jail, child goes to child protective services over $5.00. ????

Not really. She committed a larceny and the store decided to prosecute. Happens everyday. Dollar amount doesnt matter.

How many pollocks does it take to...

Common sense is gone in this contry thats why your 4wheelers have more warraning decals than nascar. It is amazing how many government jobs have been created because people do not use common sense and have to have everyting spelled out.

Could have been handled a lot better. The negative publicity will surely hurt the store.
The decision here was not a good business one!

I've made the mistake of not seeing a speed limit sign and got a ticket...
The defense that I forgot or didn't see the sign doesn't work -- they stole (on purpose or not) and they got arrested.

Now I'm not saying that the store did the right thing as if I was the Manager I would have just taken the $$ for the sandwiches but they have the right to have them arrested.

And if they sue, they should be taken out, beaten and be required to pay the stores legal bills.. they stole 2 sandwiches -- period

The only time I got arrested was in High School (1995) at Wallyworld because a friend of mine stole something and I told him not to (I even walked away from him and was still shopping when the basically bear hugged me and forced me into the back room)... they said I should have turned him in.
The cops told me it was ridiculous but they had to take me downtown with the thief because it was wallyworlds right to have me arrested.
The cops were telling my jokes and not to worry about it, they never fingerprinted or took my pic -- not the case for my buddy. The paper the next day listed his name and me as "other teenager" in the section of arrests.

That night, 2 executives from Wallyworld flew into Charlotte and brought loads of documents to our house for my parents to sign -- my dad had them shaking in their boots.... Still to this day I don't know what the documents said or if there was a settlement reached but my dad did say that I'm not suppose to discuss this per the documents that HE signed -- I never signed crap so I can tell my story

Oh yeah, I'm also banned from Wallyworld for life but if they mention anything about what happened and that I am banned, then they violate the agreement and my dad said to hope that they arrest or kick me out one day.

Plain and simple - she stole. NO matter how much or what she stole - she stole. The penalty for stealing is jail. They can say they intended to pay for it but what they did was eat it in the store and then didn't pay for it.

Let's review - she stole - she went to jail.

Who eats a sandwich they havent paid for? If you are "Famished" get a sandwich, PAY for it, then eat it. Just like the rest of the world who isnt retarded. Being a pregnant citizen of the United States of the easily Offended dosent excuse stupidity or theft. We used to let stupid people kill themselves, now we keep patching them up and sending them home to breed more stupid people. The shallow end of the gene pool is getting pretty damn full.

Dude, you need to run for president. I'd vote for someone with common sense.

Seriously. All of this could have been avoided if she used a little self control to begin with.

it's not even that serious, they bought $50 worth of groceries and forgot to pay for $5 worth of sandwiches.

Dude... 5 bucks is equall to 10 percent of what they did pay for. That 50 bucks is gross profit...
not net profit.

Say they mark up thier prices 20 percent. They made 10 bucks on the bag of groceries.

Operating expenses ( Payroll, insurance, trucking, light bill, etc...) are probably 15 percent.

Those 2 sandwiches were equal to the profit the store would have made on the 50 bucks they did pay for. Due to the theft, they sold the grocieries for free. Hard to keep the doors open like that.

You forgot to calculate how much those $5 sandwiches actually costed to make. I'm not saying waive payment only take into account the merit.

Take into merit the fact they are frickin' thieves and got caught. 2 grown adults commited this crime. Both of them didn't forget to pay. If they were to steal the profit you would make the next time you sold something, I have to assume that you would be pissed. You are correct about one thing... Tha samich didunt costed whut thay cherged fur it.

Actually considering the fact that costed isn't even a word it's not considered a spelling error. I don't know why you're being a crybaby ass bitch and taking it personal nor does anyone know their actual intentions.

The signs are referring to general dumbassery such as your use of the non-word "Costed". LMAO! Take it easy Sargent Ass Hat, no need to start slinging "crybaby ass bitches" around from behind your evil keyboard! You knew what the word "merit" meant... Thats pretty darn good!

I'm not choosing sides here, but...

A couple years ago I stopped for gas at a local station. As I was filling my tank, an old friend whom I hadn't seen for a long time pulled up on the other side of the pump to fill his truck. Well, we got to BSing, etc..... said goodbye.... and I went home (didn't pay). As I pulled into my driveway, I realized what I had done and went straight back to the station. When I walked in, embarrased as all hell, the girl behind the counter was just grinning and calmly said "got ya covered, knew you would be back." I shudder to think how this could have turned out.

Now maybe the couple who went to the safeway were petty thieves, I have no idea, but I think it's pretty damned sorry to have went the route that store went, and if I ever come across a Safeway store I will make sure not to shop there. Just my two cents...

things happen, people get wrapped up in the now, and don't think ( like Granny mentioned, it happens)

as child, we'd go shopping with mom and first thing would be getting a small carton of chocolate milk to enjoy while we shopped, paid for at check out with the rest of the groceries, never a second thought. have done same with my daughter.

people "graze" the produce all the time grapes, tomatoes, other fruit, just to check freshness( presumably ) technically, it is stealing. rarely if ever is anyone busted for it.

given the circumstances, the Safeway Gestapo was quite heavy handed, if only because they had a case
clarity, common sense, and reason were not considerations. We got our bad guys !! we have justified our jobs for the week !

approaching the family and asking about the sandwiches would have been the best way, then go from there. denial, you have a case,
" OMG, we forgot" , ok, it can happen, given they just spent $50 on other items. check priors, make them nervous, lots of questions. make them think about what could really happen.....

Now, if they were raiding the shelves like tweekers on a binge, cuff 'em and stuff 'em Roscoe !!!
