yellowjacket nest

I pour a 20 oz drink bottle half to full of gas and stick it in the hole. The bottle wont let the bees out and the fumes kill them.

x2

I've heard soapy water will kill them too, but I've only used the 1/2 bottle of gas trick.

They usually only have one entrance/exit hole. They do all come in at dark and they're not active after dark. I use professional pesticides to kill them but have never encountered one that close to a well. The nest will be less than 24" deep so as long as you don't pour 20 gallons in it you shouldn't contaminate the well. I wouldn't use gas though. Use a good insecticide that you mix with water. One gallon should do it. and it's better to mix it and spray rather than pour undiluted chemical in there.

I merged the new yellowjacket nest thread with the yellow jacket thread that was last topped about a week ago... lots of good suggestions and info, figured they should go together. ;) Y'all be careful out there!

Well...heres a little update. I was gonna go to lowes and get the stuff mentioned but I couldn't find my car keys. So, I got a 1liter water bottle and filled it about 3/4 of the way with gas. Went out there last night and stuck it in the hole. All the gas went in and I left the bottle. I came home from work today and they are still swarming around the bottle! Must be a sizable nest. I can't tell how they got out cause I can't get close enough. There are hundreds swarming.

They dug their way in and they dug out when you closed off their hole. The gas probably evaporated. You just pissed them off! :)

Round 2....results to come...

I always pour about a gallon of gas down the hole at night and throw a match down near the hole if it's in a safe area. I've sat around and watched holes burn close to an hour before.

I know a gallon is over kill but I like to do it right. :D

Tried this, minus the fire part... Didn't work. Nest must be pretty big. I just used the stuff above and it only took about half a can to fill the hole. We'll see what it looks like in the morning.

I've always done this and I've never had a problem with it not working. You must have a huge nest. Dig it up and post some pics once you get the dumpster divers all dead.

Ohhh...the saga continues...

I used the spray foam stuff. Today there are just a handful of them buzzing around the grass so I decide the dig up the nest... There was no nest in the hole I was spraying. I dug about a foot deep. I definately saw yellowjackets flying in and out of it. wtf.

I also sprayed one that was flyin around and looked at it to make sure they were indeed yellowjackets and yea they are. (neighbor behind me has bee hives)

rubbing alcohol works like a charm...better than gas actually.

There is or was a nest in there. All you see is a little bit of honeycomb. You probably got them.

Update:
Mowing the grass today I found a 2nd nest about 30ft away. My yard has several soft spots in it from stump removal so I bet they love that.

Used the foam on the new nest I found last night. Started to dig it up this afternoon. Got about a foot down and found the top of the nest. Its big. Probably about the size of a basketball but too early to tell. Didn't see any alive but had one do a flyby and that was enough to make me run like a little girl. I'll post pics of this when I get it out.

Can't recall where I saw it, hell it could have been here. I watched a video on someone pouring plaster or something in an ant hill in Africa and then excavated it. It was amazing just how huge and intricate it was.

I took my time trying to get it out in one piece but there was a root right through the middle of it and it just fell apart.
