yep, that's the way I always looked at it while racing.
yep, we r all walking around the house with our foil helmets in case of the alien invasion.
Just wondering what everyone is using for crawling. don't get me wrong. not for URE, and other trail rides. for use on some serious hard core obstacles. and yep I know, why wear 1 if not wearing it all the time. I definitely ended up with a concussion from playing on practice day at an mx track.
I started wearing my mountain bike helmet last year after PinkXJ hit her head hard in a bad rollover and the other woman down south died in a rollover. I hit my head on the cage at least once a trip just during rough wheeling (no rollover), so it saves a headache at a minimum.
get a panthers football helmet. Then you can jump on the bandwagon as being panthers groupie and it will work for your wheelin' in case they tank....and full face protection is built in!
I keep an old retired ski helmet hooked to the cage. Doesn't do much good there, but I'll put it on if I ever get in a spot where things could go bad quickly.
I feel with the evolution of helmets going on right now with all the studies that anything you buy today will be worthless tomorrow (foresay). The current NFL situation with so many millionaire players in the position to sue has finally prompted more much needed in-depth studies.
Helmets have SOOO much room for improvement in so may areas. Material, comfort, sturdiness, weight and mostly experience in their main purpose. Protection!
We had a bicycle helmet in the back glass of the car driving around for a while and it cracked by the sunlight. So there's another reason to worry...
I wore a $250-$300 DJ Safety helmet for racing the last 5 years and have just recently switched to a nicer HJC. The difference is night and day in comfortability. I can wear the HJC all day, where as the DJ would start to irritate my forehead after an hour or so.
I would invest in good harnesses and understand how to properly use them (if you're don't already). Most scenarios around NC will keep your head off the bars if you're tightened in correctly). That and the fact you should have 3+ inches of space from the top of your head or helmet to any bars above you.
There are some cool/educational videos out there that show how much the human body stretches at different speeds and g-forces. It's insane to see the math, I think I remember watching something like the spine and neck stretches 7 inches in a 70mph crash.
