Hello. How to modify my jeep

You should undelete it.

I lol'd.

I built a price comparison to building a 8.8 vs. a D35. Except the actual axle purchase price (given you might be slightly ahead cause someone might pay YOU to take a D35) they are basically the same investment of parts for a shit axle vs. a good axle. Not finding all that shit again for a JF who thinks a D35 is the bees knees.

Am I The only one thinking that an 8.8 doesn’t even need a full case locker or chromos to run a 35” Tire?

I have absolutely tortured an 8.8 on 36s with heavy beadlocks with no issues. It had a Lock Right locker with stock shafts. A stock 8.8 is stronger than any “built” D35 all day long. One can buy an 8.8, drop in a locker and regear it and call it good compared to all this money spent on a 35. Not to mention if you upgrade later, someone will pay you for the 8.8, while it would take an idiot to pay any good money for a D35 built or not. I know you never get your money back out this hobby, but you will get some of it back with good parts.

I cant believe this is really an arguement.

Built d35 verses a 8.8? Seriously, put the bong down. You have smoked enough.

I'm wondering where people are getting full case lockers, alloys, install, and warranty for $600...

For about $700 Yukon makes a grizzly locker/ cromo axle kit w/ c clip eliminator for the 8.8. Of course gears, install, labor on top of that (if you can’t do it yourself). But either way the D35 is no cheaper so I’d love to see how he did it for less and have new warrantied parts??!!

Amazon

The grizzly was $220, with a manufacturer rebate of $60. The 30 spline shafts were $160, the gear set was $56, full install kit was $38, and the superior truss was $225. All new, with the manufacture warranty.
I sold the 4.10 gears, carrier, and stock shafts for $50.

Must have been a hell of a sale plus rebate plus gift card plus computer glitch. Wanna buy a lottery ticket for me too?

Didn't need a gift card or computer glitch.
Seems that a dana 35 is a shit axle, and retailers can't sell parts for them at retail.
Not really luck at all, just intelligence to find a decent deal...

Contrary to popular belief, I am not trying to compare a dana 35 to a Ford 8.8 in terms of strength. Or am I trying to piss everyone here off.
Flat out , my only reason for all this is to point out that it is possible to build a rear axle for a 4 banger tj for around $600 that will survive moderate wheeling on 35s.

That's it.

Will the 35 last forever? Nope.
Can it break? Absolutely.
Do I carry spares for when it breaks? Yes.
Can a 8.8, dana 44/60, 14 bolt, break? Yep.

That's all I am saying......

And now....

Wheeling on 1/2 tons and 38s. ...get set....Go!

Seriously though... Will it break as soon as I back it off the trailer, or can I survive past the trail entrance? :D

This is all going on the improbability of me actually getting my pile out of the garage. I honestly still wish I'd go back to 10 years ago and kick myself square in the jimmies for getting rid of my 14.

Okay, there's my take at stirring the pot.

I will trade you my 35 for your 12 bolt....

I'll do that, then grab that 6.2 from the Parts For Sale section. Now we're talkin!

I actually wanted to put a 6.2 in my CJ some time ago...still would like to build a diesel something or other, but just don't want to take yet another 200 steps backwards with this build....lol

Just out of curiosity , but why would you rather have the diesel over your 402?

I can do you one better , I have 4 angry squirrels under the hood of my jeep I can throw in the axle trade if it helps....

Nice. I had the 4 angry squirrels under the hood of a YJ that I had about 15 years ago...then put them out of their misery with a 350.

Not sure why I wanted to do that...I think it was an infatuation with a diesel swap, plus no emissions check on them (given that I actually got the thing road worthy again)... But then I quickly came to the realization exactly how many hours I have put into it, not to mention the cost...so sticking with the 402 is where I'm at for the foreseeable future. Especially since I'm in the midst of building an EFI setup for it. My next trick after getting it running again will be getting it to run cool. SBC's and Jeeps seem to not mingle well in the cooling department...at least not for me. I could only keep that 350 running at best ~200 or so. This 402 loves to run warm, but I think I might have a decent idea at getting it cooler...time will tell.
