So I finally got the title switched and tagged my trailer. I may or may not have been using it illegally for a while....

Anyway, it’s a 2010 model Quality Trailer 18’ wooden deck dove tail. It was less than $3k new if I remeber right. Just now at the DMV the fee for title transfer and stuff was $127!! I said wow I was expecting less. The lady said the taxes were $44 and some change because the value was $4,910. I was like “shoot I couldn’t sell this thing for more than $2k now, I could buy a brand new one for half or a little more than that value”
Well this lady was real nice so she gave me a temporary sticker, told me to call a number and tell them the value was wrong and they would adjust it. I usually procrastinate on things like this, but I walked out and called, within 5 minutes this nice gal had the value adjusted to $980 and said I now owe $8.78!

Just thought I’d share, I usually never pay attention to things like this and thought those values were set in stone. So if you are about to register a trailer or used vehicle, make sure the value they determine is in line.

Cabarrus valued my 6X10 open utility trailer at $12,600 when I first got it. It took a few rounds of letters and photos and receipts to fix.

Here in Cleveland County, they see “trailer” and think RV. My Dad and I have gotten used to it and have pictures and receipts handy at the tag and tax office. The lady up there says it’s a default setting to catch the scammers.

same rules for any "older" vehicles. got a letter that my son's 1980 D100 was a "classic" and would be valued accordingly. wrote them back with a dealer's bill of sale and value dropped to $800. guess they're looking for tax dollars from "restored" vehicles to add to the coffers. found it funny they thought an 85 dodge d100 was "classic"

Lady on the phone said it’s an automatically generated number because trailer values are so across the board.
I wonder how many folks just pay it and don’t question it.

And in 2 or 3 years you get to do it again. Just got a notification that my 67 fairlane is worth 18k again. Had to send in a bunch of pics showing I haven't restored it so they will only value it at 8k. [emoji849]

3 years back the property tax was higher on the fairlane than my 03 f250.

They tried to bump my 78 f150 crawler to 10k, I sent them pics of it all dented and said it doesn't even have a bed they put it back at 800.

I have permanent tags on my trailer, just have to declare it's value with the house property taxes each year.

I got the tax value for my 2015 deckover tag trailer last month...

$9,800 tax value

I sure wish it was worth that much. Closer to $4000 is more realistic.

Same thing happened to my dad a few years ago...they valued a 400 dollar boat trailer at 1300 bucks.

What really hurt my feelings was putting tags on my new trailer. Permanent trailer tags went up to 100 bucks and then I had to pay sales tax on it so there was no disputing that amount. 350 bucks later, I was limping back to my truck with a sore ass.

Phillip, you Lucky dog! I've posted this before, but when I Up-dated to a 2006 trailer, DMV hit me with $3600 value! That was in 2015. Hell yes I protested, as I paid $1600 for it, & Could have bought a Really nice New one for $3600. They won't honor a bill of sale from an individual, but they told me to send pictures & a full description. I Also sent a couple of Trailer dealer adds, showing the NEW prices. The Friendly tax people say their stuck using the books, & quotes that the State Authorizes. They also said my trailer looked really nice! It was hard to make it look Bad, but I sure tried to run it down. They did agree to drop my value to $2800. Anything less would have only been 5-10 $ difference, so I sucked it up & settled. Just a F-----g Rip Off!

And people wonder why so many people that own trailers dont have tags on them, or do like my friend does, and use the tag i originally had on a norther tool trailer , and have used on many subsequent trailers....

I mean my friend does.....

I thought about using my Boat trailer tag, but it had a Big Ol, "BT" on it!

I would interpret the BT as big trailer!!!!
And I have convinced many a cop of way more outlandish things than that....
They are usually easy on you when they figure out your not all there in the head... .

I'm that case you should look in to South Carolina trailer tags. They are like an honest politician.
wait, so you're saying trailer tags are a myth in SC?

Maine doesn't require you to be a resident to tag in their state. Even better you can do it by mail, 5 years for $100.
There are tons of companies that will handle it for you.

It works both ways. I was talking to a Ferrari customer of mine last week. He said state values his mid 80s 308 at 6000 dollars. And he's happy to write a check for that. Lol.

When I’m first bought my 2012 18’ equipment trailer tax value was $10,500. I had to call several times and even fax them a bill of sale to have them change it

I just sold mine last night (an unusually smooth Craigslist transaction). I think I'll write the county and tell them I want them to prorate my $6.30 tax bill.

SC permanent tag is $89, no annual property tax. The kicker is, as you said, sales tax. I bought my trailer in NC and didn't pay tax. SC upped their tax cap from $300 to $500 along with the gas tax increase. With the permanent tag, title transfer fee, sales tax, and the credit card use fee, I was over $500...
