Thinking of joining the ranks of boring daily driver - Accord or Camry?

Believe it or not, one of the most mundane cars that is expensive as shit to insure is a Nissan Altima.

Not the case with my 2013 Altima with state farm.

Bought it from my oldest girl to take to college. Rate for it is on par with the rest of my "fleet"

Whatever it is, no CVT TRANS bullshit. They are horrible to drive and seen a many catch fire. My cousins nissan rouge burnt from a trans fire.

2009 the Camry XV40 platform went from the mildly problematic 2AZ 2.4l to a more reliable and stronger 2.5L 2AR

The 2AZ-fe had issue with oil consumption, our ‘07 Camry SE would use a quart in 3500miles, it is a known issue, some were fixed with a modified PCV valve. this was pretty much to only complaint i had of that car in the 72k it traveled prior to its demise.

the 2011 Camry SE that replaced it was a MUCH better car, the more powerful 2.5 was silky smooth (minor whine from cam/balance shaft gears when cold) the 6spd was also very smooth, shifted better than the prior 5spd auto. and it has the option to go into manual mode (also fun to play with)

we had the ‘11 Camry SE for 4 years, put 24k on it (boughtnwith 20k on it, 44k total on it when sold)
I have a company vehicle, wife liked driving the ragged ass 4Runner. So Camry sat most of the time. Not good for a car with leather interior in the Carolina sun. Was a great car, if we had a garage or somewhere to keep it from baking, we’d still have it.

Camry SE and XLE have a brace behind the rear seat to increase chassis rigidity, thus leaving only a small pass thru in the rear center of the seat from truck to cabin. The CE and LEmallow rear seat back to fold down and have near full width access.

while no race car it did handle reasonably well for the tank it was, especially once it had decent tires on it. BFG Touring TAs are a marked improvement over the cheap ass Sumitomo POS the dealership put on it to make it a “certified pre owned”. also, don’t put directional tread tires on a daily driver

QFT! That's what they put on the wife's sienna before we bought it, and I wish they would have just left worn out tires on it so I could replace em with something decent. Now I'm stuck with crappy tires that are too new to replace.

Now I'm stuck with tires that are new and I could pass them off to some sucker on Facebook or Craigslist so I can get what I really want!

Fixed it :D

Juan or Rogelio are always looking for cheap tires....

Well, I think I found a car. One of my buddies was out at the house over the weekend picking up some Camaro parts for his cars. He drove up in his daily driver Accord.

We got to talking and he said his buddy had a 2001 Accord he was selling, 160k miles, 4cyl, showed me pics and it looked really nice. I'm going to go check it out tomorrow and probably buy it. Getting it for a song. :)

Just do the timing belt and water pump when it's next due and you'll be good for another 100k. Inspect the belt if you don't have service history.

Yeah, it is a simple job and I can literally do a complete tune up including water pump and timing belt for like $200.

Aisin water pump. Gates timing belt kit (without water pump) and Aisin water pump. The pump that comes with the Gates complete kits is usually crap and not as good of a spec as OEM.

Also replace the valve cover gasket and plug tube gaskets if that's one of the Honda engines that requires valve cover removal for timing belt replacement.

You dont have to take the valve cover off to do the belt but might as well. X2 on aisin water pump. Keep an eye on the distributor leaking on the heater hose

I found a kit that has this stuff: AISIN Water Pump, KOYO Tensioner Bearing, NSK Balance Shaft Tensioner Bearing, Mitsuboshi Timing Belt, Mitsuboshi Balance Shaft Belt, Honda Geniune Tensioner Spring, Honda Genuine Balance Shaft Tensioner Spring

Buddy of mine who knows more about foreign junk than me said it sounds like a good kit. That look ok?

I most certainly do need to remove the valve cover. It goes over the timing cover. Besides, it's like 4 nuts.

All of those companies are OE suppliers to Honda, so that's going to be the same as buying everything in boxes with a H on it, but cheaper. That's exactly what you want.

Maybe add a OE thermostat as well, just as cheap insurance later. Test it first, always.

Dang. I must have been doing it wrong for the last 13 years. I just take the 10mm's off the timing cover and pull it from the bottom. On the civics you do need to take the valve cover off but like you said, it's easy enough to just pop the valve cover off. And since we are cock waggling, there is 5 bolts, not 4 nuts.

@Blaze there is balance shaft seal retainer that you need, also. It may already have one on it but if not, pick one up. There was a tsb about the seal walking out if it doesn't have one.

You're slicker than me then.. last one I did a few weeks ago, I don't see how there's quite enough room to do it, to each his own.. and yeah there are 5.

Well, I am back in the market. That Accord I was going to buy got stolen when I was on the way to get it.

I did start looking at newer Civics. I test drove an 09 today, EX sedan. I really liked it and seemed like it had a ton of room. 148k miles and I could get it for $7k out the door. Seriously considering it.

That’s the thing about Accords and Civics, they have been on the top of the most stolen list for years.
