Taking fire, how would you handle it?

Ok so long story short I was on my property approx 179 yards from a old grumpy ass man that lives behind me to the SE of my firing range He’s came out and hollered cussing me before and I’ve ignored it this time he came out on his back porch and screamed I’m gonna fucking kill you as my gf and the two boys watched while sittin in our driveway!! I responded to call the police if he has a problem and fired last mag I had loaded! As soon as last round went off I hear a loud boom I wear electronic ear muffs while shooting so knew it was a gunshot even over the muffs and the distance, I then hear a bunch of rounds fly by my roughly 45’ from where I was standing, was kinda in disbelief then another shot rang out except this time the pellets from this pricks shotgun hit less than 7 yards from me bc he hit my targets some damn how! Through trees and a drop from his house! So I take cover behind trees and start to reload my magazines bc I wasn’t certain what I was being shot at with or from where. I immediately had two mags reloaded and I moved around the small ridge line below my range and used binoculars to see where he was while on phone with 911, he started walking toward my property line so I took cover turned ear muffs up and just waited, I didnt return fire bc I know he’s a old ass prick that’s always gave people problems and I’m not trying to harm his dumb ass even tho I was severely pissed!! Find out later my family witnessed his ass shoot at me (which I didn’t know at the time) but officers did nothing when they arrived and told me to file complaint wth magistrate office if I wanted to!!?? Wtf What do y’all think about this? I’m not trying to get a old man locked up but damn he shot within 90 yards of my house, over my property line, and at me and ballistics will show the shotgun wade directly toward my firing range!! I typically have kids out at the range with me 75% of the time...

What options are there here I don’t want to let him think that shits ok bc it’s not and he’s seriously lucky I kept my cool bc I had just put my dog down 1 hour before this and was very high strung to say the least... what do y’all say? Leave it be and if happens again react accordingly to situation if I’m danger or go to magistrate office and let them do whatever?? Officers came and looked over my range we used gps at the range to locate all properties distances nearby and I’m 100% legal in every way possible! The damn pellets from his bird shot we’re at my tire berm and I picked one up to show the officer, He told the police he was shooting at a coyote I stood 80 yards away with my muffs on and heard every word he said he told them he’s shot off the porch which he did not he shot at bottom of the steps of porch bc that’s where he can barely see my range from bc it’s on hillside with a flat plane and said he shot up the mtn but pellets hit my targets... truly blows my mind people these days tho and what they think they can get away with!

I would take all legal action I could against him. He has well crossed the line of no return.

I agree. I would do everything legally you can to at least provide a history of his actions if things progress.
If you feel safe speaking with him, I would ask why he shot at you, and then politely explain that if it happens again you will kill him.

Or do what @jeepinmatt would do, and burn his house down........

But seriously, I would never allow anyone, even a mean old man, to shoot at me twice....

I'd head for the magistrate and file on him. At least there is an official complaint/charge if it goes further in the future.

And you probably don't want the county prosecutor to read "and if happens again return fire" on this forum, if it ever came to that.

I was going to make the "burn it down" comment but couldn't remember who always jumps to that conclusion to tag them!

I agree he did cross that line no doubt, but he does has a wife that’s elderly too and I don’t know if I can lock a man up and his wife be needing help daily if she can’t care for herself... tough situation but something has to be done officer said they would take the specific gun he used if I press charges but then what he comes out with 300 or 308 and can actually touch me then lol I dont wanna have to carry a rifle out to the range to defend against his crazy ass every other day tho and I shoot 3 days a week typically never more than 50-150 rounds and never crazy speed firing he told the cops I had full auto machine guns shooting them and he heard me all the time. Smdh

I hope they at least filed a report of them coming out(the LE) yes I would pursue what legal roads you can. He may not do this again, knowing that the LE know about it. But, he may so you can't take that chance. I am glad it was at that distance and with a shot gun though. But I'd defiantly not take the kids down there any time soon. Let us know what the magistrate says. In the mean time, when you go down there, at the very least put up some type of vid camera so you can catch him doing it, if he does it again.
Be safe!

Yeah I asked the officer if he wanted to ride up to his house with me so I could speak to him but I was to pissed off after I said it and decided wouldn’t be a good idea! Especially when Amanda came out and said the boys and her watched it all go down even him screaming at me then running inside to get the gun!

I do understand where you are coming from with this, but at the same time you obviously have a family to protect.
I see the legal action as the much preferred method, as they would probably only lock him up for a few days. That would be much better than the alternative outcome if he keeps firing at you......

I hear you, but play stupid games win stupid prizes. It really sounds like your only option other than do nothing.

Flip side, maybe he does care for an elderly wife and doesn't get much sleep and you woke him up or something. Maybe he was in NAM and had a flash back. The reasons are endless. If you can't have a conversation with the man, to the magistrate I would go.

Yeah I’m gonna swing by there tom afternoon to at least make sure it was filed and for them to make note of situation I guess! Unfortunately I made it clear to the officer that if it happens again before the courts settled it that I would return fire and he said if you feel threatened for your life or ya family’s, do what ya have to do...

I would definitely wait a while to speak with him. Nothing good comes from talking when both parties are upset.

You got feeling for his family when he showed none for yours? He may be crusty, anal, or senile. But stupid and firing toward me in any repect is where the line in the sand is drawn. You said you had an officer at the scene. You said you showed and had evidence the officer saw. You also have your family, though biased as witness.

Go after him, legally.
Ratchet the distance closer. You would have defended yourself. Do it now.

Yep and I knew I was too bad off in the head to be talking to him that day I could barely keep it together to talk to the leo...

Good point you make and yes I still have the evidence and I’d bet dime to a dollar I can find the shotgun wade on my property too I had multiple pellets beside the tire berm I told the officer what’s he shot at me with with before he mentioned the rifle he brought out i just didn’t know wha got gauge. I left the pellets there until I made decision on what I was gonna do tho ballistics will tell the truth regardless what either of us say tho shotgun leaves a trail there’s pellets in trees too closer to his house...

Fixed it for peace of mind... I’m trying to make light of it even tho it’s serious situation bc of his age and everything else we’ve had going on recently. But the more I think about it, he could have easily turned that rifle to his N and had a clear shot directly at my family sitting in a vehicle 90 yards away and that doesn’t sit well with me!

I dont even like folks who brandish weapons, much less run their mouth....

I like Paul's advice.
I got a a-hole neighbor who blares music and tries to smoke me out weekly. I'm not sitting on my porch blaring louder music or fanning smoke in his direction. Few calls about ordinance and fire related informed me when to take legal action.
At the right time of night the law turned his tunes off for him.;)
Later on..... When his shed caught fire he got some hefty illegal burn tickets. :D:eek::rolleyes:
Legal folks need to use the system too.

And if that doesn't go well, burn his house down.
Lmao I’ve spoken with him before over Chevy parts he wanted to buy, maybe if I go up there with the door he needed for his 78 he’ll see I’m not carrying full auto weapons and I can use chevy junk as peace offering!? Or put that same door where he can see it off back porch and start popping it from 100 yards with a hp rifle while he’s wondering where the hell its coming from...? If I had any other weapons that is, I told the cops all we had was my edc pistol for home protection:D since he accused me of having full auto weapons lol
