I need to build a ZF-6 to put in my F550 tow rig. I currently have three transmissions with various problems and I'm trying to decide how to proceed. I was wondering if there are any knowledgeable builders in the area that can help out. I've never done one of these end loader transmissions and I just don't relish the thought of wrestling this 250lb monster around on the bench while I learn.

@palmetto zuk his dad is the go to man in rock hill

Not sure if he does them that big but Josh's Trans Service in Marshville may be worth a call. He only likes working on truck transmissions so may want to call him. 704 242 0346

I'm not sure if Mr. Claude wants to attack the SD/MD trans..but if he does he'd be my guy.
Probably the best Ford mechanic I know hands down on any aspect of the car. The rebuilding manuals, to autos, to motor work and diagnostics.

Thanks for the replies.
I tore in to trans #2 yesterday and it appears that the only issue is that the roll pins fell out of the "shift finger". I think I can get by with just a couple new roll pins in that one. I'm really hoping that will get me by for now.
Some day, I will end up dismantling #1 and #3 and try to build another out of those. They have much bigger issues.

There's a shop in Matthews that rebuilds ZF, got the one I put in my 7.3 from him. Can't remember the shop name but I know I was referred there from Overdrive Rebuilds in Concord. IIRC the cost was ~$1900ish with bringing my core in.

Be a good dude to send a couple c6’s to be rollerized to, and spec out a couple converters??? I’ve had the worst luck with trans builders.

I'll put you in touch.
He's a good dude. Was a tech and then a service manager for Ford for 20+.
One of the guys who gets it and does it.
And has some nice high end toys. If he tells you a story about having 2 of some weird random only 4 ever made ofs....he does...

Pretty sure Ross said he wasnt doing autos anymore. Just gears and manuals.
