Newer Ford guys - Explorer engines?

So we are looking for a new vehicle and my wife is liking the Explorers. I have a friend who has one and she really likes it. Anyway, I know jack shit about anything new. I just don't want to end up with a turd. I'm already thinking of breaking away from tradition and buying a Ford. :lol:

So options are the Ecoboost 4cyl, N/A 3.5L and Ecoboost 3.5L. The EB 3.5L is probably out of our budget, but what about the other two? I've heard good things about the EB 4cyl, and I like turbo shit so that's cool to me. The 3.5L, no clue. I don't seem to trust it as much, but that is because I know nothing about it and am wary of Fords just because I'm a GM guy. :lol:

Any insights?
 
no clue. i do know the new Bronco Scout or Adventurer will have the ecoboost motor in it. So if your just looking for the motor and platform maybe hold off for that.

atleast it be a little bit cooler than an explorer. and MAYBE hold its resell value better.
 
Just have personal personal experience...I have non-turbo 3.5's that have blown by 200k with about 5 oil changes/each. Only things I've had to do is replace injectors at about 150k. Roughly 270hp so can decently fun to drive. I usually pulled low 20's mpg on the highway regardless of vehicle. EB 3.5, I find to be a lot of fun, never had one more than 100k though...so not sure on longevity. The 4cyl...I had in a Lincoln once...it was a 4cyl. Vehicles these days I figure are disposable...drive to 200k, trade in, repeat.

We're buying a used one. We also are buying it to get a third row seat.
 
N/A 3.5 is a tried and true engine. We’ve had about 5 of them over the years with no issues. I will say the eco boost V6 in my wife’s Edge is a powerhouse and no issues at 47k miles. Personally I’d steer clear of the 4 banger after driving a couple.
 
Stay away from 3.5 ecoboost if you plan on keeping it a long time. They will stretch a timing chain every 70-80k miles. Its not hard to replace but it’s just shitty engineered. The direct injection pump adds too much strain.

Well, I think we decided against an Explorer. We liked it, but with the options we wanted it just wasn't what we wanted. It is odd to me with a big vehicle like that that the third row only has two seats. We wanted middle captains chairs so that was a deal breaker for us since it'll only seat 6 at that point. We are going with an Acadia or a Traverse.

Also...I'll still never understand this one. 20 years ago when trucks rode like hell or you had to get in to cars at awkward angles with a car seat...I get it. But today, with crossovers and SUV's, to me they're almost synonymous with minivan. One just has sliding doors and the other has swing out doors. Albeit a minivan is probably half the price of a comparably optioned SUV...but dammit, my ego, pride and dignity have a price.

Exactly. Our boys begged us not to buy a minivan. We didn't have to be swayed too much.

I get it, I hate ours too, but the wife likes it. Cargo space of a 3rd row SUV is just not comparable. And the ease of entry, exit, and child management is much better in the minivan. I don't think people understand until they have one for a while. I still prefer to drive my truck everywhere with the family, just because it's my truck. But the van makes more sense.

My in-laws have a nice Odyssey. I hate driving it, my wife hates driving it. The space is nice but really hate driving it.

See also: "whoop dat ass" if'n they decide to act a fool. Though, it really only took one good smack on a bare ass per child to instill the memory of what that "look" actually meant

It's a huge vehicle to have as little interior space as it does.

Buy an Odyssey or a Suburban.
 
If I could get a minivan to tow my boat I would be all over it. Roomy. Comfortable. Cheaper. Take a 10hr road trip in a SUV vs minivan and it’s no competition.

Fold the 2nd flat and you get in the 130 range.
I agree with you, especially on a tahoe. But a suburban is the exception. Its why i say car, minivam or burban....btw wife will be selling one soon

I'm just going off of the internet specs. Says 121ft^3 total for a suburban and 150ft^3 total for the sienna. Because the minivan is on a car chassis, there's probably a lot more room vertically, which significantly adds to the volume. I can stand up and walk around and play basketball in ours.
