Opinions/experience?

Thinking the small welding/fab area of the shop might get one. (20x22x22) The heat is killing me this year.
 
I have met the husband wife team that own the company at a hardware show. Nice folks who seem to really care about the end user. Seems simple to set up and if I had not been able to purchase Daikin mini splits at cost they would have been my first choice.

I've read/watched a lot online.

One thing nobody talks about is actual operating costs. Of course, that varies so much with location, temps, your settings, insulation, exposure, etc. We keep the house at 77 in the summer, so I don't need to get the shop to arctic temps, low 80's would be great on a 95 degree afternoon.

Some days I need it just to kill the humidity and resulting condensation on everything.
 
I put a room ac unit in my garage, (2 car with extra 6 foot bump) last summer was the first. If you are going to run ac you about need to run it all the time as all the mass takes awhile to cool down. It kept up no problem, all walls are insulated and room over garage is condtioned. If I hadnt got this for free I'd be saving up for a mini split. Electric bill wasn't noticeable higher, just had it set at 78 or 80 to knock the heat off as you said.

Holy shit, 77? I keep the house at 67. The shop is fully insulated 40x60 has a 5 ton heat pump and stays around 75, the highest power bill might be $130. Taking the humidity down is the biggest plus. Anyway I've installed more than a dozen mini splits, they aren't terribly hard but to do it right so that it lasts does take some work and expensive tools. The biggest issue you're going to have is that a welding/fab shop is going to quickly clog the evap coil in the indoor unit...one of the other pros of having a traditional split system installed is that there is a real filter which does a great job getting rid of smoke and grinding dust, the downside is you need to be on top of checking and changing them because they will very quickly clog and flood the compressor. You might be just as well served looking for an 18k btu heat pump window unit.
 
Good point braxton , I do have two ten by 20 filters on top of my indoor unit to pre filter the incoming air. My electric bill went up $15 a month or so and I keep my garage around 72 degrees. It is 24x36 and insulated.

I've had no experience with Mr Cool, nor known anyone to install one. Having said that, I personally would look to MFG's I've spec'd and had good experiences with. (NOT FUJITSU!!!)

Looks like Chapel Hill is the closest ACR supply to you. If it were me, I would reach out and have them quote a 2 ton trane (Mitsubishi) mini split. (my cost last year was $1,256 for everything needed) If you know anyone that works for a HVAC company and takes their van home...installation can be REALLY cheap.

2 ton is assume you're not looking for 65 on a 95 degree day, you're simply looking for less humidity and to no be soaking wet and melting while in that space. I'd Mount the indoor unit high, and the outdoor unit directly on the exterior wall at the same elevation so your line sets are as short as possible.

No experience on Mr cool, but I have a 24x30 shop with 12 foot to rafters and an open ceiling so 20 feet to peak, with just one layer of bubble wrap insulation (basically nothing). I have a 2 ton home heat pump and a 2 ton (24000 btu) window unit in it I use for heat and cool. I set heat at 64, cool at 67. But I only turn them on when I'm out there generally. That's why I've got way more than I need. On a July afternoon in the sun they keep it in the low 70s, at night they actually cycle on and off, and it'll be comfortable after an hour of turning them on. In the winter same, inside air temp will go from ambient outside to high 50s in an hour, it is cool if you're just sitting but working I'll already be in short sleeves.

Since they aren't on except usually 3 to 4 hours a day, 4 to 6 days a week. Shop electric bill running both with lights, fridge, compressor, welder, power tools, etc is usually 60 to 70 a month in summer, 70 to 80 in winter with electric heat strips bringing temp up. I did have a 150 bill this winter but I was painting dad's c10 and left heat on continuous for 2 weeks for curing as I did a little each night after work.
