Any retired vets live in Virginia

Not a vet, but when I moved up here from Charlotte in 2019, My auto insurance dropped by half, and my property taxes are way cheaper too. State sales tax is lower also. Gas used to be cheaper, but that change a couple of years ago so the state could raise more money to fix Interstate 81.

A friend is possibly looking at 21 acres in the Buchanan area and has been talking pros and cons with me so I figured I’d ask cause I know some of y’all are Virginians (by choice or otherwise).

Not a retired vet, but a vet... living by choice in the Commonwealth
Moved here in 2018, mainly due to *ALL* acreage in NC being $10k/ea... even toxic waste sites, swamps, or 85* slopes 🙄
Same as @Tom@Hilltop_Machine ... everything was less (taxes, insurance, etc.), but has seen some increase in the past 5 years.

Can't speak to the vet specific benefits available, but can point y'all to some Vet resources that cover VA, likely more informed on what's out there than I?

I'm in an agriculture county (Patrick = "poor") that totally missed the boat 20 years ago to bring businesses here, and that hasn't changed today. The closest thing to "traffic" is a tractor or occassional wreck and is 100% laid back.
Buchanan, being along the I-81 corridor, could be similar? OR could be an extension of every other urban shathole?

Looking to learn FIRST HAND knowledge of property taxes, vehicle registration, exemptions and so forth for the state of Va. compared to NC.

-asking for a friend.
Property taxes are a pittance of NC
Vehicle registration is 75% of NC, but inspections are $16 (ALL vehicles & trailers WITH BRAKES), 2 different classes of "antique tags" (yellow = drive anywhere/anytime, black = restricted to club/parade/Maint use, but $50 once) and insurance is 75% of NC... and don't forget the $5 "Farm Use" tags (available at TSC 🤣)

What are the age requirements for vehicle inspections? He had newer truck(2012) and an older DD hoopty (1989). Or is it everything on the road

How old does a car in Virginia need to be to not need inspections?

Nearly Every Vehicle Needs an Inspection Each Year

Antique vehicles that are 25 years or older and registered as an antique with the DMV do not have to be safety inspected, unless you drive the vehicle regularly. New automobiles purchased in Virginia are also exempt from safety inspections for one year.

As long as he doesn’t have to pay weighted plates and just a normal truck tag that could be a benefit all in itself. Especially being fully disabled and hopefully the plates are reduced??!!

I retired from the Air Force to Virginia, While I haven't particularly sought them out. There aren't any particular discounts for Retired Military that I'm aware of, Active Duty gets a discount on vehicle registration, it actually asks you that in particular if you do on line registration.

No Property Tax exemptions.

Retirement pay is taxed just like normal income.

As long as his truck GCWR doesn't exceed a 26,000lb he shouldn't need a weighted tag, (Careful, a lot of 1 ton pickups can now exceed that legally with a fifth wheel).
